The answers I got from my doctor about hair loss

Recommended Posts

i just need another month to sort everything out before i decide if i want to go back on propecia or not. i had bad side effects last time and if i go back on i plan on taking some sort of anti-estrogen drug to combat the effects of it.

You could try going back on propecia at 0.5mg per day, i have read this is only a few % less effective.. but with less side effects, as with many prescription drugs less is often more...

My hair structure has not altered at all, it is soft, still stronger than most peoples hair and generally looks very healthy, before the last few days my scalp was in good condition aswell. I did originally think i had some curling, and some thinning of the actual hairs, but that was probably in my head, and if it wasn't it has grown out now...

I think i irritated my scalp with overuse of shampoo, so go easy on the nizoral.

My hair is falling out at a pretty much constant speed, throughout the whole of my scalp.

My only hope is that the trigger was both the brain swelling and the upping of my dose, combined with severe emotional distress, i was a complete mess and tbh at the moment i prefer my situation over what it was a few months ago, sure i'm loosing alot of hair and its very distressing. I just can't describe what a mess i was 3 months ago.

My hair if anything still look's thicker than alot of peoples, but i seriously had the thickest hair i have ever seen on someone.... I will also post pictures if mine continues to worsen visably, you will not believe how thick my hair used to be!! maybe that will be my saviour in the long run, who knows...

P.s. whilst we all can (if it even does become terribly noticeable) we should all just get out and try and forget about this. I really can't talk because i bring myself down about stuff all the time, but i plan on enjoying myself as much as i can whilst my hair still appears normal. I'm going to vegas on the 1st of july and then florida straight after that. I'm gonna try and forget about this shit.

I know we probably all feel really sorry for ourselves, and i really feel as if i don't deserve any of this. Hairloss, plus the addition of many new scars and having a terrible folliculitus infection of my beard for the last 9 months, but to be honest, it could be worse, even if we think it can't, it really could be. We will all get past this one day, regardless of the condition of our hair, we will be happy again...Best of luck everyone

yea it's just kind of disappointing cause i at least wanted to be able to enjoy the hair i had for another couple of months, and while it still looks somewhat presentable now if it keeps falling out at the rate it has been i really can't see how my hair will be in any sort of decent shape by july. my hair loss continues and is still bad it varies from day to day some days i'll lose around 15 while others around 40-50. today has been the worst i can remember though in a long time and it's really getting me down i stopped counting at 50 but i would say i've already lost 70-80 hairs today. i dunno anymore, i'm gonna just stop with all the vitamins i've been taking and try another whole body flush this week while eatting nothing really but apples and drinking water. i found that last time i tried to flush my body out for a couple days my hair loss slowed down so maybe that will help.

he probably means in the shower. if so, that's not normal. most of the time i measure how much hair i'm losing by how many i find in the shower, because this is the area i have to compare to the times before accutane when i lost 0 hairs in the shower.

keep hope, ithappens.

So I finally have gotten around to post my pictures of the hair loss i am experiencing from accutane, but before i lay everything out there i will restate all the details because i want to make sure that my situation is fully understood correctly. I am a 21 yearold male who went on a course of accutane for 6 months starting from last august to this past feburary. i started my course for the first two months at 20mg and finished the rest at 40mg. My vital stats are that I am 5'7 155lbs and very healthy active guy i play soccer for my college etc etc. I noticed hair loss during my treatment but there was barely any at 20mg so i cant really verify for sure if i was losing hair while on that doseage however once i went up to 40mg thats when the hair loss began granted it was only a minor amount coming out in the shower, i would say anywhere from 15-20 strands would come out while showering but that was it, it wasn't really continously falling out throughout the day. also around this time the texture of my hair also changed as well. the thick staight strands that i had for hair started to become curly thin weak and wirery, but there were only a few in the back and i didn't take much notice, i just figured that the loss would subside once i finished the drug. Enter my last month of accutane in january that's when the whole MASS and I mean MASS shed hit in. I was losing probably 150-200 hairs a day. i counted 90 in the shower one time, i mean it was bad really bad. However, and very stupidly on my part i might add i continued out the last three weeks or so and finished the course. Over the next two and half months till mid april i would say that my hair was shedding massively throughout the day. It was becoming thinner and thinner by the week and when i went to the derm i had a positive hair pull test and he concluded that it was TE and that my hair loss was induced by accutane. He said there was nothing i could really do besides wait it out and hopefully the loss should subside and i should regrow my hair, but it could take anywhere from 6-12 months. however, he did stress that in the upcoming months if the loss didn't slow down substantially then my hair had a very severe problem. while my loss seemed to be slowing up somewhat in may and granted i am not losing as much hair as i was a couple months ago. my loss still is very substantial throughout the day and when i shower at times. granted some days are better than others, but i usually lose anywhere from 20 on a good day to 60-70 on a bad day. i also see a ton of hairs being shed on my pillow still as well. so overall i think my hair is pretty well fucked.

Anyway as my hair has become thinner and thinner here is the status of it. I have a diffuse patch on the back vertex, my temples have had major loss, and while i still believe my front hair line hasn't really receeded the whole part behind it has recently started to diffuse away and ater looking at the pictures im starting to question whether it may in fact be just diffusing away altogether. the biggest thing has been that my once thick full straight hair has been reduced to these weak wirery curly strands all over or as i call it now mad scientist hair. So here are the pictures of my hair loss and let me first start out by saying yes i know that it isn't horrible looking yet, but trust me if the loss continues even somewhat close to what it has been for the next few weeks it will really start to unveil itself to the world. and also trust me on the fact that i had such a full thick set of hair, thicker than most of my friends and most other guys mind you, so most other guys who would have went through what i went through with this would probably be in very bad shape based on the amount of hair i lost so i guess thats part of the reason why i've survived this long, but trust me when i say that i have lost 50-60% of my hair no questions i have so there's no arguement. anyway here are the pictures.

These are two pictures taken before accutane and any hair loss etc. the one on the right was taken about three years ago when i was 18 while the other was taken about a year ago only a month before i started n accutane. as you can see it's a full set of healthy hair and was one of my best attributes. rip hair

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i267/ep451/untitled33.jpg

these are the pics of my accutane hair loss. notice the diffuse loss on the top part of the head as well as the sides and the temples. also notice the shitty shitty texture of the hair now. with my luck i should i have never touched accutane, a couple more months and it's buzzer time and while i have a mis-shaped head it's better looking than a chemo patient i guess.

i guess i realized why i've been putting off posting these pictures for so long because it's so fuckin depressing to me right now. after looking at everything and looking at pictures of me last year and how good i looked i'm depressed and furious at myself for going on the shit in the first place. it's almost 5 in the morning here and my sleeping pattern has been fucked up for the past month because of all this. i keep trying to pull myself up from it and move on and i try i try as hard as i can and i keep coming back down. the whole accutane thing i mean i looked really young only a year ago the way a 20 yearold should look and when i look at myself now be it the accutane effecting my skin and hair combined with the stress over all of this probably i look like i've aged 10 years. i was so much better off before going on this stuff it isn't funny every aspect of my life was better. i would do almost anything to go back a year in time and do it all over again. part of my youth is being taken away from me and at 21 and for what? so i don't have any acne on my back and forehead anymore that wasn't visible to most people anyway. i'm mad at a lot of people about my problem but most off i'm mad at myself cause the better years of my life seem to be heading behind me at 21.

hey ithappens... did ur hair fall during tane treatment or after?

my hair fell out during my treatment, but the mass shed that i experienced and still am experiencing occured during the last month of treatment and has lasted until now. i am losing less hairs but i attribute that more to the fact that i now have less hair to lose than the actual slowing down process.

ohh .. yeah your hair seems to be very bad since you get tane.. try to shave your hair .. ill do it after ill finish my course coz mine is also very very weak and it should be stringer after that.

yea that's what i plan on doing very soon and true the shorter hair should be stronger but i honestly don't really ever see the hair coming back, i've lost too much of it. im not saying that everyone's hair loss is permanent from accutane because it isn't but in my case i think things are pretty much over and done with as far as my hair goes.

that's good to hear, but there seems to be a different type of hair loss that myself and others go through post accutane where a mass shed ensues and a lot of hair is lost. i too lost hair while on accutane and then had the mass shed towards the end and off of it. my stupidest decision was not to stop the medication at the start of hair loss in the first place. plus women seem to have a much better chance of recovery than men.

i feel the same way man. it feels like i'm 40 years old going bald at the age of 19. i feel like my life is ruined because i didn't get the chance to take advantage of my youthfulness while i still had it. i constantly think about my hair. i feel depressed all day long moping around just hoping today will be the day it stops coming out. i only had moderate acne and i had read all the side effects, dryed lips, dry skin, possible depression, etc etc, but some how missed HAIR LOSS, which if i knew it was a side effect there would be no way i go on it. my hair is just to important to me. i'm so pissed off that this happened to me and i feel like it's driving me insane.

Your hair doesnt look that bad ithappens. It does look a little thin(diffuse) and if your hair was really thick beofre you probably have lost alot. Id say your biggest problem is that your hair looks really wirey and coarse, but the individual strands look thick. Have you tried using a girly mousturizing conditioner? I showed your pics to my mom and her exact words were "yea that looks how mine did except mine was even worse". She had a bout of TE after pregnancy and it all grew back. Dont give up hope yet.

I second Popeye: your hairs are thick in diameter and not miniaturized. MPB might not be a factor.

Popeye,

How long did it take for your mother to grow her hair back?

Julius,

What are your thoughts on trying to treat the inflammation of your hair follicles with some kind of steroid cream?

She said she doesnt know for sure. She went to the doctor a few months after my brother was born and he said it was really common and not to worry about. She said she didnt cause she had a new baby and alot more on her mind so shes not sure when it went back to normal. However she said she went to get her hair cut like 9(shes not exactly sure how long after it was) months after the doctor visit and her hairdresser commented on how she had tons of short little hairs growing up all over her head.

I agree that it's not in the typical MPB pattern, but it's still just not comforting knowing that i'm losing hair and it's not coming back. Julius from the pictures i posted of my hair loss do they resemble what your hair was like back when you started to mass shed and all? i'm 4 months off a course of accutane and i've been having a mass shed for around 5 months now. i also will add that most of the hairs that do fall out especially at the top part of my head are very affected in curliness and change in texture, ie very curled up and have weird strange curls in them.

my mom had TE twice, once from child birth and once from stress from her job. she said she doesn't know how long it lasted, but it did grow back. she said it lasted a long time, as she recalls. she also said she used to almost cry from the globs of hair in the bottom of the shower drain, which would be consistent to what i see after a shower.

yea thats what im hoping but the thing that i dont understand if it's just regular TE than it doesn't make sense that the whole texture of my hair has changed and the weird wirery hairs and all. thats a side from chemo hair loss. julius i have a feeling my hair is headed in the direction of the way yours is now. does the hair loss im going through now similar to what you were experiencing while transitioning to diffuse paper thin accutane hair?

Maybe its the lack of sebum causing your hair to be so wirery. Have u tried some sort of mousturizing treatment or shampoo? My hair was getting pretty dried out and crappy looking so i used some of my sister's girly conditioner and it helps big time. Also, julius seems to have some other problems which could be the cause of his hairloss.

I pm'd dolph a few days ago, and he has told me his hairloss had stopped. Just thought i would let you all know as he seem's to of left this thread now...

I did think the last few days mine had slowed down an awful lot... I only lost about 8 in the shower two days ago, then yesterday about 15. But i seemed to loose alot on the pillow last night. Mypoorhair, did your slow down or resolve spontainiously?

Mine slowed down 3.5 months after the hair loss started. I lose about 10 to 15 hairs a day, which I think is normal.

I think that the shitty texture of Ithappens's, and my, hair is due to a lack of sebum, like Popeye says, but also due to a slow-down in keratinization. That said, I don't think the hair follicles have been damaged.

My hair feels 100% normal to someone else. To me it feels ever so slightly more dry than normal. Although if i don't wash it every day it goes oily if anything, the slight curling i had at the front also seems to of grown out.. My hair is actually more managable than ever. I can however start to see my scalp where i couldn't before :S

Pic below was taken last week, to me my hair looks alot thinner, i would say 30%(yes i was wasted)....

This time last year...

Sorry about the photos i'm just trying to show you how thick it was....No one can tell yet even when i point it out.....But it already looks alot different to me... I will take some with my phone and put them on here after i get my transfer cable. If i lift up my hair just above my ear you can see how much has gone...
