The answers I got from my doctor about hair loss

Recommended Posts

Hey daniel and ithappen, what I meant was I am post accutane for 1 and a half month and hair still shedding without any sight of stopping.

Daniel, I was on 20 mg for 137 days so that's about 4 and a half months.

oh ok well in that case all you can really do is wait it out. In all honestly i wouldn't try to much right now, but you were on a lower dose so hopefully for your sake it should stop eventually, but there's no guarantee for anything. so for now you're best bet is to just wait and hope.

Yeah, that's exactly what I thought. Wait it out for 3 mths before I visit a derm. Anyway, while I was bathing just now, I notice that my right side burn area was receding abit. Hai... a new problem to get worry about.

Dude, you didn't give the steroids long enough and people with diffuse AA nearly always have scalp burning and/or itching. Much similar to us. The hairloss is more complex but it can be treated just like AA....

I'm not gonna say it anymore but any prolonged cases over a year to 18 months are diffuse AA, it's as simple as that...

Lamarr that last post just highlights my point perfectly

I'm not here to argue with people so this is the last that i will say. But you have always been extremely negative about this situation. I can assure you i have had it worse than you from tane, but it's no competition and other than trying to warn people and prevent them from making the same mistake i did, i don't moan on, it isn't constructive and doesn't help anyone.

Secondly you make comments that are totally false, ofcourse im not a doctor but i can assure you i know more on this hairloss situation than any doctor or derm you have been to.

Things such as saying corticosteroids mess with androgens is total rubbish, as is people with AA have no scalp itching or burning. Do some reading, nearly ALL of them do, even if it is just small patches, not only that but 95% of people with diffuse AA have scalp itching and burning.

You just seem to make comments that are plucked from the sky, that is all.

If i can help people save the 8 months i spent trying to find answers then im gonna, whilst you carry on with your moaning and wallowing. Stop bringing people down, i have dozens of problems from tane but i look to find answers and ways of improving my health, from day one it has seemed as if you want "closure"

Here is yoru closure, you have Diffuse AA. If you want to do something about it then take my advice. If you want to let it progress at a rapid rate then you go ahead and do nothing, lets compare heads of hair in a few years time.

Good luck to you either way because i know how shit this can be.

Heres a link for you to read about AA sufferes and scalp sensations, note all of them commented feeling the same.

When you all started shedding did it suddenly come on bang, or did it increase slowly after like a month or something, |I have in the past had 2 bouts of TE, once when I was 15 after having haemorratic measles and again when I was 17 after losing about a stone in a month after having really bad flu. From what I can remember it both started suddenly, when I was 15 I was washing my hair when my sister started screaming I looked up and the plug was hidden from all the hair I lost, my mum came up started panicing and then checked my head for the large bald patch she thought I should surely have, but because I have thick hair and it was diffuse loss you couldn't really tell any difference, in fact for the 2 months that it lasted I qiuet enjoyed freaking all my friends out when I got ready at their houses with it.

I went to my GP today to talk about the loss i am experiencing now as my dermatologist is so pro accutane you would not believe it and I don't think I would get an objective (honest) conversation about it, as again I have thick hair he didn't really think I have TE especially as the hairs I am shedding are long and thick, he talked more about hair shedding in cycles and it might be that I am going through a shedding phase as previously I was only loosing about 10 hairs a day as compared to the 100/120 I am loosing now, however I do not want to be worrying that it will get a lot worse.

I have read loads of hair loss forums and the burning/itching seems evident in a lot of te cases, however a burning sensation can also come from suffering from anxiety another thing that my dalliences with accutane has given me and it also puts me in mind of what came first the chiken or the egg.

My hairloss began suddenly, but the rate at which i lost hair gradually picked up over a number of months leveled off and i have now reduced it through a number of means. That is all i can tell you about my hairloss and the shedding.

I've read up a bit about biotin and accutane and you can safely take 5000mcg per day, that might be more effective, although i've been taking that amount for the last 6 months and just started shedding more than usual!!!!

At the moment I'm taking 1000mcg 2times a day. I think spreading them out gives the effect of time release. Lorri did 5000mcg a day make you break out?

Hey daniel,

The problem for me is not only shedding but regrow. I notice that there were some regrow but it was still not good enough. I can't imagine if i shed 25 strands per day x 1 year without regrow then what will happen? I may try Grape seed extract but definitely not biotin, because I breakout whenever I consume peanut and hazel nut and they belong to biotin family.

well max, i think you are in the same boat as me.

"wait and see"

its rough.

are you trying Grape seed extract and biotin?

I've been taking Biotin for months now and it seems to have neither helped slow down the hair loss nor triggered regrowth. However, it has not caused me to break out at all. About a month ago I increased my intake to 5000mcg twice a day.

I've also stopped taking Propecia, as it has not had any positive effect on my situation and the accounts I've read of Propecia actually causing hairloss make me wonder if taking it has just made things worse. I have been taking grapeseed extract for about two weeks now as well. This is in addition to the use of rogaine. I'll let everyone know how i'm doing in another couple weeks.

are there new crappier hairs filling in the old ones places?

that could TE, like i feel myself has.

i have minuratirazion of the hairs and no other side effects like itching or burning... id look into it.

Daniel, You don't need itchy or burning but it does help diagnose the diffuse AA.

I would say if you have miniturized hairs on the sides of your head aswell as ontop, then you probably have diffuse AA.

Now people don't get me wrong here, diffuse AA can easily resolve within the first 6-8 months after you stop tane. Don't think the AA is a life sentance, you haven't gotten it from your genes it is drug induced so chances of it stopping are much better.

Yeah, most were crappier hairs and miniturized hairs. I was really worry when I first noticed that the new hairs were not as thick as it suppose to be, and I shed hair which were mostly short thin hairs. Wonder where does it came from? Just hope that it was from the side or lower back rather than the vertex and front.

Hey guys I just noticed that some of the hair on my beard/mustache changed colors. Some of follicles are completely gray some are light brownish.

Accutance actually effected my facial hair too I guess.

Anyone else experiencing this? You have to grow your beard out to about 1/4 inch to notice the color.

Yeah i get alopecia areata in my beard aswell. When the hair regrows it comes back in white/grey for a while before returning to a normal colour!!

Lamarr,

Thats interesting I need to keep track of my facial hair now. Not sure if mines are changing back or not. Are all your facial hair back to normal color now?

Pretty much dude, there is a patch on the left side that is still much thinner than the rest and isn't as well pigmentated. But that is filling in back to normal aswell now.

I have an area kind of like this, but more filled in now.

any breakthoughs lamarr?

i wish i could be confident with biotin and GSE...

but im nearing 100 some hairs a day, and starting to get pretty scared.

by the way, what happened to andy? he seemed like he was real learned on the subject.

Andy learn't as much as he could, but his derm didn't know about the diffuse AA, if his derm did know then they weren't letting on. Andy stopped shedding within 4 months but had a few sheds in the months after that, The main difference between him and me for instance is his shedding showed signs of stopping early on, mine just sped up and has been very persistant.

My hairloss sped up for a while im afraid, no breakthroughs yeah but don't expect them to be fast they need to be tested over a period of months, we are trying many supplements such as curcumin for the reduction of inflammatory cytokines, which are definenetly at the centre of tane hairloss.

what were andys symptoms throughout his hairloss course? how did it stop, what did he do?

and curcumin???? more supplements lamar!!

what is curcumin?

don't you think that your hairloss was only temporarily decreased due to the topical steiroids? the supplements seem like something of a temporary releif.... except for biotin.

I believe Andy either had a short bowt of AA, or was TE. His hairloss stopped suddenly after about 3-4 months post tane. He Had to wait a long time for regrowth though and he tried both propecia and minox.

Curcumin is used as a strong anti inflammatory, very good for you in general.

The steroids only work when i used them, which i do constantly. If i stop them the shedding goes back to how it would be.

The supplements if taken and work as desired will have a similar action to the topical steroids (IF they work in the desired way). Biotin is even less likely to do much IMHO, except strength the hair, i don't think it will reduce shedding. The biotinase thing has been looked at in depth and doesn't really play much of a role, but biotin in general is good for dryness etc...

so..

is AA generally a temporary thing? do most people recover from it? i always figured it was more of a permanant thing. because you hear of little children that get it and suffer for the rest of their lives.

how many people in your experience have recovered from what you thought was AA?

thanks for the response about the topical steiroids... it just seems like all of these actions we are taking are temporary relief!.. like blazes kenalog for example! he only sees improvement when he gets the shots.. and then back to the crapper when off... i am willing to bet the supplements are too.... but i guess any improvement is panamount, temporary or not.

how much curcumin should i take?

by the way lamar, are you still going to gather up all of your knowledge into one big post! i am thoroughly excited about this, i want to have that for my next derm visit.

Yeah i will get round to it i promise, i am certain on how accutane does its business these days, which i know you guys probably won't buy as your docs can't even tell you. I am not saying we can currently easily cure these tane side effects, but i do believe i have a very good understanding.

Daniel if you have no other side effects and knowing the dose you were on i honestly believe you will be fine. There have been about 4-5 people in this thread who i believe have had AA and it has resolved or them.

Davidhatesacne, Andy (maybe TE), rolph, Gdwrite and a few names ive forgotten.

Those are the ones that spring to mind, i have been with this thread pretty much since the begining and have read pretty much every post.

The supplements such as curcumin and the grape seed aren't really temporary i honestly believe if we can find the right one(s) we can actually POSSIBLY stop the process with them, i know no one will probably believe that but that is fine.

Curcumin and resveratrol are used together VERY effectively in psoriasis (auto immune). Curcumin is also good in chrons disease for it's anti inflammatory properties.

I cannot tell you a dose as of yet but around 2000mg should be ATLEAST beneficial and as you will find it is very good for you in many ways.

I you dig deep i will give you a quick break down of what you should find, accutane messes with the cytokines and cytokines receptors, basically AA is believe to be initiated through in part inflammatory cytokines, inparticular those that fall under TH1/TH2. Namely INF-Gamma and TNF-a.

It has been proven that TNF-a is at the heart of many inflammatory conditions and has also been proven to be upregulated by isotretinoin (accutane).

Curcumin and resveratrol are very effective at reducing these, the grape seed extract has shown promise in reducing the infiltration of luekocytes (anti bodies). Which are also involved in AA.

You will find what i say all has scientific evidence to back it up. I am not going to say go out and buy these and it will fix your hairloss, because AA is a relatively complicated thing and may even be different in each of us. There is no harm in trying these though as like i said there is perfectly good evidence to suggest they can and will help.

You will be ok Daniel, i said the same to dolph and davidhatesacne.
