Omega 3, 6, and 9 Fatty Acids

Recommended Posts

I am taking 5-6 pills per day. the bottle says 1000mg of country life brand - i can't remember the breakdown of EPA and the other one but i remember it was ok and i am definitely noticing less oil after about 2wks of taking them. i will update

Very nice, I am glad it's starting. Just remember, it starts out slow, but as time goes on and you look back, results are noticable and continually advancing. I have a feeling at the 2 month mark, is where it will finalize, and that's where the goal line is right now.

I have been taking pills of 1000mg of Omega-3 each, the brand name is called "First Choice" it comes in a fancy box and says Made in Canada. I take 3 daily with food every day since Wednesday of last week, now I am starting my 6th day, but I have yet to see any results more than perhaps the oil is not as sticky but this could be wishful thinking, I still have a very oily face, and although I have not measured my ratio, my consumption of food is not that much hehe, although I do eat many food with saturated fat, aww I will continue until I end them up, but I'm a bit sad as I don't see any shocking results so far, I'm oily as a slice of a hot pizza

The whole point is to balance your o6/o3 omega fatty acids to a 1:1 ratio

so this would mean you would have to stop consuming foods high in o6, or if youd like take 50 fish oil pills to balance it out.

if you read through the thread you learn how to do this.

actually i think its on the first page.

xxndnromeoxx,

How much Omega-3 Acids are you getting a day now? 2000mg?

Currently 3,000 mg (epa and dha) together from pills

10, 300 mg epa and dha pills.

Plus my 700 in ALA from my whole wheat pasta and whatever else from food (on the first page).

I am over on my ratio on the omega 3 side, but right now I'm really loading up, and will go on "maintenance" later on so I am 1:1 once I get enough in my system, and that will be when I am 100% happy with my result at that time. Let's see how that goes for now

I was taking 6 pills a day, so about 1.8 grams of epa and dha. In the first week and a half I only took three pills. 0.9 epa and dha

I hope that helps

A quick visual update:

This is my clean and clear sheet I used after about 6 to 7 hours after showering. I pressed pretty hard too, on my entire face. As for the people that use it, this means there was barely anything on it. It's about 1/4 of the sheet. I used to easily use up an entire sheet by now and get onto my next one just last month I believe.

2lkv250.jpg

And I didn't even realize I had any on my face at all. But I believe I could have gone till my next washing (every 12 hours = twice a day) without it.

For a while, I used to think it may be a placebo effect, but it really isn't. It's progressing fast, very fast.

Update:

Still nothing too dramatic, but there has definitely been some steady progress. I still get small breakouts, but the majority are the weak ones we've talked about. Its strange....my left side of my face has been clear for a while now, but my right side is still really struggling. Earlier last week I ended up with two pretty bad cysts, but they've died down at this point. I had a couple small ones thatve tried to come in in the same area but I was on the case and they never got bad and are already on their way out, but it still bothers me that it happened.

Im currently taking 8 pills...3 morning, 2 mid day, 3 night. I think ill up it by one or two based on that article posted in the last couple pages.

Im sure this wasn't too informative or inspiring, but this week should be the real test. Im on spring break and therefore can devote a lot of time to my skin. Im gonna check back in towards the end of the week and hopefully i'll have seen some real progress thatll determine how well its working.

Analyze your complete daily consumption at nutritiondata.com w/ a registered account!

Hey, for everyone who's been using the nutritiondata.com site to count their omega-3's and 6's, I've just discovered that if you register at the site (free and pretty simple), you can then save foods to your "pantry" and then add different amounts of foods to a "recipe" and then analyze the totals of all foods combined. I just did this and treated my "recipe" more as a running total for total consumption of the day. You can save it and then go back and return. If you try this I do recommend going to the pantry help page, as its a little bit clunky/counter-intuitive as to how to actually save at first: http://www.nutritiondata.com/help/pantry-help .

I think this is great, because once you have the foods you commonly consume, you can do this pretty much everyday easily and not only look at omega totals but all other totals for calories, proteins, EPA, DHA etc. Of course if you supplement w/ omega-3 pills you will have to add to the total yourself, but I think this is much more efficient that copying pasting into a spreadsheet. Good luck!

Well, I thought I'd give an update on this. I've been religiously tracking my food intake for the past 10 days now. I recommend you guys trying this like how I describe above. The first couple days is sort of a pain, but after that I pretty much have all my foods saved to my "pantry" and only takes a few minutes a day. Obsviously the hard part is to figure out the exact amount I'm eating, but regardless of my estimates the trends are pretty clear.

My o6:o3 ratio over this time period diet alone (not counting fish oil supplements) is 6.19 to 1. Counting supplementation, it is improved to 3.69 to 1. I definitely I have to improve though (this past week I've been a little sloppy straying away from the paleo diet). I've pigged out a few times on nuts and that just sent my ratios skyrocketing for the day (i.e. 13 to 1 before fish oil pills). The most interesting part is that I've started applying Clearogen during this time period which has really improved my face and prevented new pimples for the most part. However, my two worst pimples in this time period I first noticed forming the morning after the days (on two separate occasions) I had the worst o3:o6s ratios.

Lesson learned: STAY THE F---K AWAY FROM NUTS or down like 30 pills on those days!

If you're confused, do this

Take 6 to 10 fish oil pills a day (which equals 3 grams of eha and dpa)

Take out and nuts and egg yolk from your diet

Drink skim or 2% milk if you have to

The rest is whole carbs, grains, veggies, fruits, and protein. Little fat as possible, only with the consumption of fish oil.

Wait a month.

Profit? lol. I guess that may be the easiest I can put it =/ But try and figure out how to do it... read big beauty's post above, or just ask someone else to try and figure it out for you.

How is your diet like? And also, how long have you been doing it. Definitely up it to 10 if you can for the spring break, that is what I am doing. Focusing on my skin this week, hardcore. No slip ups.

omega 3's in, omega 6's out

Guys, I bought a bottle of fish oil from Whole Foods and started taking it last night. This is the brand I got:

http://www.nordicnaturals.com/retailers/pr...mmary.asp?ID=33

I plan to take roughly 1 tablespoon twice a day -- once in the morning, once at night. A little background: I don't have severe acne at all, but I do have insanely oily skin, and the oil is thick and not very moisturizing, which means that even though I'm oily, I have lots of little dry flakes. I have a lot of tiny bumps, my skin texture is not good, and I'm prone to a lot of blackheads and few whiteheads.

One thing I noticed is that the oil doesn't taste fishy at all. It actually tastes lemony and fresh. I'm keeping mine in the refrigerator.

So far I do feel a little less oily. By this time of the day (it's noon, and I get up at around 8 am), I can usually feel a lot of thick oil on my face. I don't know exactly how to describe it, but I can just feel it, and it's pretty nasty. This morning, I'm definitely feeling lighter, but I don't know how much of that is psychological or due to other factors (weather, humidity, etc.). I'll keep this up and let you guys know how I'm doing.

Yes, definitely keep us posted. I checked out the label and twice a day sounds good. (it will get close to 3 grams of epa and dha)

Btw, how many servings are in it?

How much did you pay, and of which one, the 8 fl or the 16 fl?

I am looking to buy some.

If you want, you can take it more than twice, and then after a month, reduce it to twice for maintenance dosages. So it will kick start your system faster from the lack of omega 3's. That was my mistake, i went gentle first, when I should have had my higher doses in the beginning for the loading phase

I paid $25 for the 8-ounce bottle. Pretty expensive! On the back of the bottle, it says each serving is 1 teaspoon, and there are 48 servings.

Yeah, I think just looking at the omega ratios for various foods is misleading without considering the actual amount, not ratio is in each food. Using nutritiondata.com's numbers, consider english walnuts (which has probably the best ratio amoung nuts) vs. Taco Bell beef tacos (a true health food!).

Walnut o-6:o-3 ratio is 4.19 to 1 which isn't that bad. The ratio for the taco is 15.4 to 1 (yikes!).

However, eating four tacos (736 calories) gives 6092mg of o-6 and 396mg of o-3. So you'd need 5696mg of o-3 from fish oil to balance out. This is a lot, but consider eating 1 cup of shelled walnuts (654 calories). From the walnuts, you get 38092mg of o-6 and 9079mg of o-3. This is a difference of 29013mg that you'd need to take in of o-3 from fish oil to balance out. JEEBUS, good luck! My pills contain 740mg o-3 (EPA+DHA+other o-3's), I'd need to down 8 pills to balance out the tacos and take 39 frickin' pills to balance out the nuts!!!

STAY THE F---K AWAY FROM NUTS!!! I hate saying this, because I love nuts. I'm going to have to start snacking on deep-fried bacon instead...

hey....thanks alot for the quick reply! you seem to know what you're talking about :) well as far as diet goes, i eat alot of fruits, veggies, granola, and all that good stuff so i think im set on that. i started taking the green tea pills recently and im willing to try fish oil because of the excess oil of my skin (and now that summer''s coming im gonna need the extra help). would you recommend any specific dosage? 6-10 pills seems like ALOT!!!! but its worth trying if it will improve my chronically shiny skin.

I'm confused. Some things I read say that omega-3 actually excacerbates oily skin. im having second thoughts about increasing my intake now.....

3 ozs of salmon contains 3 grams of fat= to about 3 fish oil pills

theres nothing to worry about

fat is a macronutrient like carbs and protein, i dont think you would worry if you ate 60 more grams of protien in a day would you? surely its not gonna kill you.

Show me these said studies. It can't, nor will it. People get cured from acne because of a better body production, there is no way it can do harm to the oil production =) That is the last thing you should worry about.

As autonomous said, it's basically just fat, good fat. Look at the pills, they are so tiny in relativity to the size of a meal you eat. It's not a drug, or marijuana or anything, it's simply a fat that your body actually loves. Think of it like the difference between wheat bread and white bread. Your body loves complex carbs, yum! But your body hates processed foods. Same thing with this, your body will love fish oil, yum (lol) but it will hate fat from a mcdonalds meal, yuck!

eat the fish oil :)

GO for it. It will only harm you if you are taking tons and tons. 10 pills is like 2 teaspoons worth with regular fish oil liquid form :) If it makes you feel better, do that instead

Just please, start taking it. The results are no joke, it happens.

I was wondering, when people typically say avoid wheat, dairy, sat fats etc because they will cause acne, could it be that these foods actually are only making you unhealthy, and that these types of foods may coincidently be very high in omega 6 fat aswell, creating an even bigger imbalance of omega 6 to omega 3's which in turn leads to acne.

Also when people say certain sugars break them out could this be because the imbalance is so high that these inflammatory foods such as the sugars become inflamed as there is a far smaller ratio of omega 3 to reduce the inflammation.

btw this is just a question not a statement, maybe someone in here might know an answer because im not sure.
