Initial Breakout Question

I've made the decision to go on accutane since I'm currently 33 and suffered with this damn acne since I was 15. I'll be starting in the beginning of March. I'm over it!!!!! Anyhow, everyone is talking about an initial breakout that happens after you start the medication. If the underlying cysts "come out" do they show themselves and then shrivel up or do they do the usual (painful, puss, ooze, scab, scar)? If they shrivel up do they leave red marks?

I was on Tane almost 10 years ago (thinking about a 2nd course now). I was terrified of the initial breakout. However, it didn't seem that bad to me. I mean, if you're going on Tane you probably have bad skin most of the time anyway, right? I couldn't tell if my ib was actually that or just my regular breakout. Either way - think of it like this:

Constant breakouts, day after day, week after week, year after year...if all goes according to plan, in a few months it'll be mostly or completely gone. Isn't going thru an ib for a few days or weeks worth the long term result? It certainly was for me.

That being said - I am nervous about doing another round.

Good luck, just do it. It'll be over soon.

Everybody's different, and I believe it is only a minority of patients that get a significant flare. For me, it started about 1.5 - 2 weeks in, lasted about 2 weeks. I describe my flare as just like a bad 2 week period of the type of acne I normally had. I'd have good weeks and bad weeks, and the flare was just like a particularly bad 2 week period. Kind of like a month's worth of break out was compressed into a couple of weeks. Then I was done and have been clear since.

Good luck.

Thank you for the replies. It can't get any worse than it is and what I've had in the past. I'm so ready to be done with this! My derm told me that they start off with a low dose and gradually work up so as to avoid a really bad breakout.
