I know four friends who went on accutane, I've spoken to them about drinking on it because I might be starting it soon. One of them drank pretty much every weekend and was fine, the others said at first they were careful about it but after a while just started drinking as they usually would and they're fine too. All of them have great skin now.

I'm not saying it'll definitely be ok for you to drink, but people have and they were fine.

I drink when I'm on tane.

You just want to be careful not to overdo it because you are putting a lot of strain on your liver with the tane as it is, alcohol will just make your liver work even harder.

The warnings say to "avoid alcohol" for a reason! (note, it does not say "avoid getting drunk"...it's avoid alcohol period)

Not only does it tax your liver, but it can harm your pancreas. Pancreatitis is a horrible thing. We have a friend who almost died from it. He's still in the hospital...he's been there 3 months.

If I was dating someone, and found out later they were on medication that could cause harm if they drank...and they drank anyway, to impress me...well, I wouldn't be impressed!

Excuse me but will someone please tell me where these warnings are "avoid alcohol"?

I haven't seen any warnings anywhere about this, is it something new?

Thanks

When ever I get prescriptions filled at my pharmacy, I get a printed out booklet on all the warnings for the drugs I am prescribed...

This is a direct quote from the booklet for accutane:

"Avoid the use of alcohol while taking this medication because it may increase the risk of certain side effects (e.g. pancreatitis)."

This is from acnehome.com:

"Liver malfunction is one of the side effects occasionally suffered by those taking accutane medications. Drinking alcohol, which damages liver, while taking accutane treatment may be double punishment for your liver.

Similarly, the use of accutane can significantly increase cholesterol and triglyceride levels, the use of alcohol during the accutane treatment will further increase the levels of triglyceride and cholesterol."

Drinking makes me really super dehydrated! So, I rarely drink, I'm already a freaking raisin on this stuff!

Don't drink before your blood tests, or you may be denied your next months meds. The best advice is not to drink at all, but who wants to avoid a social life for 6 months? I've drank a few times on tane(Okay more than a few). I take it easier than normal, drink water before I go to bed, and I've been fine. The only difference is that it seems like the alchohol hits me faster, but that is most likely because I am drinking less often. Just take it easy--- this is definitley not the time to binge drink until you pass out. That is just asking for trouble! Have a couple, see how you handle it and stay reasonable.
