When Edward Jenner was coming up with his Smallpox vaccine, "Jenner had noticed that milkmaids rarely got smallpox and were thus unusually beautiful as most of the rest of the population was disfigured with severe smallpox scarring." Imagine living in a place where most people are scarred rather than unscarred. Our acne/scarring probably wouldn't be a big deal.

Also, in reference to the Cherokee Indians in 1738, "Trade with the Cherokee was halted for about 18 months and when it resumed the remaining half of the Cherokee suffered another major epidemic -- this time of suicide as the survivors viewed their scarred faces for the first time in the mirrors sent as trade goods." Anwhere there was a Smallpox epidemic, the ones who caught it and survived were usually either scarred, blind, or both. Many surviving Native Americans were probably all scarred up during time of the European conquests.
