Willow's (Modified) Face Reality regimen

Recommended Posts

Just dropping in to say hello ... it sounds like things are going much better for you! Good thing you found your wonderful aesthetician. I wish there were more acne specialists around ... how did you find her, anyway?

Hi! Good to hear from you. Hope all is well in your new home!

I am VERY lucky to have found the esthetician I've been seeing. There are actually very few people who specialize in treating acne. I had been searching online for a derm that specialized in treating acne. In the course of my search, I came across a Berkeley parents website and one of the parents mentioned how good Laura was at treating acne and listed her contact info. And fortunately for me her office is in San Leandro, which is about 15-20 min away from where I live. So, I called and scheduled a consult. Best decision I could have made - my skin is much, much better than it was.

I've been trying to find out more people's experiences with the Vivant retinoids, but I can't seem to find anyone who has used it (except Pam). I'm using the derm a gel right now, which I think I like (its only been a week since I started using it, so still early in the process!). I'll probably end up using the Exfol A at some point. I saw some discussions about it on the DY boards, but nothing recent. I'd like to know how people's results are after using if for awhile. I can say that the derm a gel is really gentle.

Oh, yeah, Berkeley Parents Network! Awesome site ... I used to use it for recommendations all the time. I wonder if Madison has an equivalent?

I haven't run across many Vivant users on this site ... just you and Pam and one woman who used to post in the Adult Acne forum. (I think she gave up and went on Accutane, though.)

But if you have great results and start putting the word out, that could change!

(1 week on Vivant Derm a gel)

Yeah, I will definitely keep people posted on my results with Vivant retinoids. So far, so good though! I'm still hoping for no initial break out on this stuff. We shall see!

Decent skin day today, some flakes again. I've discovered that my skin tends to be the flakiest the day after I use the glycolic gel. I'm only using it every 3rd night right now. It tends to make me peely on my chin, jawline and lower cheek areas. I've got a couple of blocked pores on my cheek that are popping up - I think they've been hanging out for awhile, and are finally surfacing. It doesn't look like they'll be bad spots though. Other than that, everything else is pretty clear - the spot on the forehead is pretty much gone, and one tiny spot next to mouth thats almost gone.

Oh, and my new concealer arrived. Its by coverblend and I really like it so far. Its supposed to be noncomedogenic, so hopefully I won't have problems with it. It covers really well and stays on, doesn't crease like a lot of concealers do.

Well, I'm at the 2 month mark on the new regimen. Things have looked pretty good the last couple of days. No active acne at all - just some flaky spots and marks from old breakouts. The derm a gel seems to be working well - no problems with it so far. My skin looks much, much better than it did 2 months ago!! :D

Did she tell you what was causing you acne?

I don't know if any one thing was causing it. She provided me with products and a skincare regimen to clear up the acne I had and to prevent the development of any new acne spots. And she did give me information on what ingredients to avoid in skin care products, foods to avoid, etc. I don't really know what caused me to break out (really the first bad breakout I've had in my life) - possibly stress, combined with hormonal changes (along with breakouts that I got while on the Differin my derm prescribed).

Just wondering what foods you were told were high androgen? Also, for flaking skin, I have found that exfoliating with sea salt and then wiping liquid zinc over your skin before bed works wonders. :)

High androgen foods are peanuts (peanut butter, oils, etc.), corn oil, wheat germ, shellfish, organ meats, beef.

Thanks for the exfoliation tips. I already use a scrub 2 times a day, so I probably can't use the salt. I'll look into the zinc though!

Skin update:

8 wks, 1 day

(1.5 wks on derm a gel)

Had a couple of small spots pop up on my chin, and one by my nose. Maybe its the derm a gel pulling out any remaining impactions? Last night was a glycolic application night, so my skin was really flaky again today. I think the chin and smile line areas are the last places with congestion - so hopefully they'll clear out soon. I do notice I'm not getting new spots as often though.

12 days on derm a gel

Well, its kind of a mediocre skin day (at least on my chin). Couple of small spots on the right side of my chin. And one other spot on my chin that is right where I got the Differin breakout - its the spot i got those red bumps that took forever to go away. I can't tell if its going to pop up again or not, but its looking like it might. Grrrr.... Maybe this is from the derm a gel I started about 12 days ago? I really don't want to go through another round of chin breakouts!!

Everything else is clear though. I'm still having a hard time covering up the marks from the chin breakout - sometimes makeup goes on smooth, sometimes it looks splotchy. Rather annoying....

But, things still look a lot better than they did 2 months ago, so that's good. I have a facial on Friday, which I am looking forward to. That's about all!

Glad you're doing well! It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who has skin that is taking it's dear old time to clear up.

Well, that's not to say I'm glad you're not clear either. That's not what I meant, haha.

Are you back on the retinoid board now?

Hi Willow, I'm just checking in with everyone's logs. Looks like things are going good for you. What percentage is the glycolic acid your using? I ordered some from Mario Badescu and I'm hopeing it doesn't make me peel. :eh: As that was one of the reasons for odering it.

Hi Bobbi -

Thanks for checking on my progress! Things are going relatively well at the moment. Better than I was when I started all this anyway! I am using a 10% glycolic serum. I do think it makes me peel a bit - my skin is usually flaky the day after I use it. If I exfoliate with a wash cloth, most of the flakes come off though.

Oh, misery loves company, eh? ;) I see how it is....

At least I'm not breaking out in the same way as I was before. I haven't had any inflammed spots for the last 6 wks or so. My chin remains the only difficult area at this point - but its much better than it was when I started.

2 wks on derm a gel

Well, having a pretty good skin day today. No active spots at the moment, and my skin isn't too flaky today. I mositurized after the glycolic last night, which I thinked helped reducing the flaking I usually get. That's about all at the moment! :D

2 wks on derm a gel

Things are looking good again today. I went in for my facial yesterday, and things must be looking really good, because she took my "after" photo! :D I'd be curious to see how it compares to my "before" photos that were taken when I started treatment, but I don't think I'm brave enough to look at those!! Some changes to my regimen again. I'm now using the derm a gel 2x a day, and not using the glycolic (it was what usually gave me the peelies). I'm still using the BP for awhile longer, as I still have some congested pores on my chin. But the redness of the marks on my chin has gone down a lot and I don't get new spots nearly as often as I did before. I'm also now on a monthly schedule for facials, rather than every two weeks.

Oh, and I noticed another client of hers posted positive reviews of her services under the "over the counter" section of the messageboards. :D

Hmmm... Got a moderate case of the peelies today. Might be from the glycolic peel I got on Friday night? I thought if i was going to peel from it, it would have happened the day after, not two days after? As a result, my makeup really doesn't want to stick to my face today - good thing its Sunday and I don't have to worry too much about how I look! I'll have to make sure to exfoliate really good tonight. Got a new (smallish) spot right under my lower lip area today. Marks are more noticeable today than yesterday (due to the peeling, and makeup not sticking!). But, no real active acne to speak of, so I'm content!!

Well, things would be looking pretty darn good, if it weren't for the damn little pustule that popped up under my eye. I had one of these before, and it got really red and swollen and took a couple of weeks to go away. I hope this one doesn't do that. I iced it a couple times today, but it still feels really tender and swollen. I think it is too close to my eye to be extracted too. Grrrr.... How frustrating! Maybe when I wake up tomorrow, it'll be gone. Yeah, right..... :(

Ack! I hate the bumps that take forever! I'm still recovering from one myself...

Hope yours doesn't last too long!

Just remember, you said things would be looking pretty darn good if it weren't for that one spot, which means to most people, you're lookin pretty darn good!

The way I see when I get a spot is "Ok, I don't look like I have terrible skin. I just look like I have some zits" So next time you have a spot, remember how far you've come!

I definitely should be looking more on the bright side! My skin is doing really well - much better than even a few weeks ago. The eye spot may not be as bad a I first thought. It hurts worse than it looks, if that makes any sense. I think it may go away faster than the last one - if not, well, I'll just start wearing my hair down over one eye - gives me that mysterious Veronica Lake look....

Well, the eye spot is going away already (so, I didn't have to don the 40's diva over-the-eye hair-do or the pirate look!) . I'm amazed at how fast any new spots are going away now. Other than that - no active spots right now!!! :D And my marks seem to have faded quite a lot. I've been using the derm a gel for about 3 1/2 wks now, and it seems to be working nicely.

My spots usually go pretty fast too. I love it. Even when I'm having a bad skin day (like today) it's still light years ahead of what a bad skin day used to be.

Yay for no active spots!

Well, things are about the same as yesterday. A couple of small spots - one on the jawline and a couple on my forehead. The one under the eye is almost gone.

I think my neck is getting a bit of irritation from the derm a gel. Its been really itchy for the last few days.

And on a completely unrelated note:

So, I wore my very best suit jacket to work today (a $200 jacket - got it at Nordstrom's rack for less than half that price). - its a pretty dark plum color and fits me perfectly. So, I am getting off the elevator at my floor carrying a cup of coffee (with a cover on it) when this woman comes barreling onto the elevator without looking where she was going (or looking to see if anyone was getting OFF the elevator) - she was looking back over her shoulder as she rushed in. I had absolutely no chance to get out of the way - so she slams into me, steps all over my feet and spills my coffee - onto my shoes and my favorite, pricey jacket.

Ok, I'm done ranting now. Hopefully the dry cleaners can fix this! If anyone has recommendations of how to get a coffee stain out of dry-clean only clothes, let me know!! :doubt:

Just when things were going smooth -

Started getting a few smallish, but noticeable spots on my forehead today - actually mostly around my eyebrows, and then one right in the middle of my forehead. My forehead has been the clearest area for me since I started - don't know what is going on. I'm noticing some little spots under my jawline and one on my neck too. Grrrr...

I wonder if my skin is missing the glycolic? That got taken out of my regimen a week ago. I'm also wondering if more frequent BP application to my forehead area would help? I'm only using it a few nights a week on the areas I wasn't breaking out in.

At least its the weekend -

Maybe the retinoid is purging some clogged pores?

That is entirely possible. They are spots that seem to come and go pretty quickly. The forehead ones are almost gone, but got a couple new ones outside the smile line area. I've been using the derm a gel for about a month, so it could be still purging out some spots. I did increase the BP application to my forehead - I'll probably do 2 nights on, 1 night off or maybe every other night. The mandelic also seems to help get rid of the spots faster - that and using ice. Ice is an amazing pimple zapper.
