Diane 35 = low/decreased libido?!?!?! AHHHHHH!!!!

Recommended Posts

I'm on Diane 35 and 40mg a day of accutane.....

now I'm reading all this stuff about Diane killing women's sex drives????

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!

I JUST got over a 3 YEAR problem of a low, practically non exsistant, sex drive..... I almost lost my boyfriend over it. Now I'm trying to look and feel better and I might have my libido die AGAIN?!?!?!?

What can I do?!?! Can I get something else prescribed to take along with the Diane to combat this side effect?

I'm going to cry...... I was so excited to get rid of my acne and be on all these damn drugs..... but not at the cost of my relationship!

CRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!

(ps. can't tell my doctor about this since she only put me on accutane cuz I told her I was NOT sexually active)

First off, what did you do to recover your lost libido after three years? I've been having a similar problem for the past year, since I graduated college. I believe it may be some sort of depression. Could coincide with the acne thing, too.

Second, does your derm prescribe Accutane only to males and abstent females? Even if you're on BCP? That's strange.

I'm on Yasmin BCP, which has similar androgen-blocking properties as Diane-35, but my libido has been great. I've been feeling much more like myself lately, much happier, and prettier, since my acne hasn't been top of mind for a couple of months now. It's crazy how fragile women's libidos can be.

I'm probably not helping at all, but I had a couple of questions.

(sorry to go off topic here but I really want to answer these questions, thanks for asking them!)

#1-recovering lost libido:

wellllll, to be honest, it was very difficult. My problem was actually hormonal for a few months but then became a total mental block (I went to sex specialist to find this out since they don't exsist for women, only men). After years of rejecting someone is becomes more like a habit instead of what you really want. It's hard to say yes when you've said no for what seems like ever!

Anyway, basically I got a big kick in the pants when my bf said he was unhappy and was leaving about 6 months ago, I had to figure out what I wanted and FAST. I decided I wantedto want my libido!

I think it was depression, but only showed itself when it had to do with anything sexual. My whole personality changed because of it too.

Also, me and my bf (who's still around, yay) figured out recently that I'd started watching "Sex and the City" reruns (about 2 a night).....so....... who knows, that may have helped! LOL!

#2- My derm is actually my new family doctor and not a derm, but previous few derms wouldn't put me on accutane when I told them I had a bf, so I told this doctor I didn't and voila, accutane prescription! I'm in Canada so we don't have that RETARDED ipledge thingy, but they still don't think that females will be able to control themselves or something. In any case, if I change my story now, she'll most likely take me off the accutane so I'll either have to keep my mouth shut or tell her I'm worried about it for different reasons.

I've heard Yasmin is worse than Diane.... and I could be one of the very few lucky ones that has my libido INCREASE, but I doubt it considering my history.

I read up on a product called Vitex which is supposed to increase your sex drive in women..... but also fertility, which is not good.

I also have testosterone pills left from when the specialists were trying to figure out why my sex drive was GONE..... but that would make my acne that much worse, which is not good either.

I'm so screwed, or not screwed in this case, heh

by the way, my boyfriend is very supportive in all this..... he often says I'm pretty and he doesn't notice my skin (even though it's BAD) but he knows I need to do this for ME. I envy him and his perfect smooth skin!!! damn him! ;)

anyway, stupid Diane (or any birth control)!!!!! grrrrrrrrrr.

I've been on Diane for 5 or 6 years. During that time, I have gone through periods of no libido, and crazy libido, so i don't think Diane was the cause...maybe it was depression, or being stuck in a rut with my boyfriend etc. Basically, high androgens=high libido=acne (in acne prone women), so you have to weigh out the benefits versus the draw backs. Personally, clear skin is much more important to me than libido, but that's probably because I am at my wits end with acne (13 years of it will do that to you!).

Actually I've been living with fairly severe acne for 15 years..... sorry to say but if you'd been without a libido for years and almost lost the love of your life, you'd change your mind.

I've been on Diane 35 for 3 years...and i haven't experienced and loss in my sex drive...im not sure tho everyone responds to medication differently! You should probably tell your doctor that you are sexually active though. Even tho you are using B/C she should know that you are just incase something happens...If you by chance get pregnant (which you wont..lol) and you tell your doctor that while still sticking with the sexless story..i doubt she will believe that you slipped and fell..landed..well you know! lol..just tell her you are and that you are using 2 forms of effective B/C!

Just my two cents tho..do whatever you feel comfortable with!!

have a good one!!

Hello all,

Is strange because after being on dianette/diane for less than 2 months I have found that my libido has increased!

But it has always been very high and mabey this has something to do with the fact that my bf has been abroad for the last 3 months and am v frustrated!

Finallymejess, Im sure your libido may be due to stress or depression rather than diane.

I have always had an extremely, ridiculously high sex drive but a few years back (was not on the pill) when my (ex) boyfriend broke my heart due to suspicion of him cheating, my sex drive disapeared!

I couldnt reach orgasm at all where as usually is very easy for me.

But when i got over all that my libido returned and am now a randy little madam again and my present bf who is the love of my life is a v happy man.

Hope your libido returns.

here is a quote from a medical website about the effect of stress on libido which you may find useful

Stress is one of the most widespread causes of loss of libido, along with overwork, tiredness and lack of sleep. Excess stress is associated with a reduction in sex hormone levels, and an increase in secretion of prolactin – a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. Prolactin has a powerful negative effect on libido, and literally switches off the sex drive as well as reducing fertility.

So stress may actually have an effect on your hormones too.

I know this is a very personal question but do you masterbate? This is a very important way for a woman to know her own body and helps greatly when you are with your partner.

Also reading erotic literature helped me when i was libidoless. Is natural if you have been with your partner for a while to not feel as sexual as you used to so it helps to find new ways to ignite your sexual feelings.

Do you go away together? weekends away in differnt surroundings can help. I find that feeling sexy about yourself makes a big difference too. So buy some sexy lingere and massage oils and whatever makes you feel sexy!

Sorry if this advice is not useful to you as Im aware that your problem may be hormone related and im sure you have tried these things before!

but thought I would offer my advice just in case!

Thank you for all the replies and questions :)

Well, I talked with the boyfriend yesterday and he's up to speed and on board! He said that whatever happens we'll be okay, and that I should try to stay on it for as long as possible, and if I notice any changes in myself that I will stop the pills and we'll deal with my short lapse in libido if/when it comes!

I can't believe how lucky I got to get a supportive boyfriend like this.

IPB Image:wub:

Now the waiting begins!

*orders more astroglide* he he he

ANY oral contraceptive can potentially lower your libido.

It's not exclusive to any particular brand.

After all, you are altering your normal body hormonal balances.

Diane-35 would theoretically be the worst though...as it is the most potent androgen suppressor available. But yes, it can happen on any bcp.

God, I don't even wantt o go here, I'm still dealing with loss of libido...

Foomph, how long after you started taking diane did your libido decrease?

Did you have a high libido before?

I have heard that if your libido was not that high before there is a good chance that your libido will decrease when taking bcp's especialy with Diane35/Dianette where as if it has always been high it shouldnt really make that much difference.

Diane is used to treat acne...Depo-provera is definitely not!

It was low to start with, so it's kinda hard to tell but I'd say about 2 months or so. I can't *only* blame the pill,as I was also on antidepressants, but being on ONLY the pill befoere, I know that it affects me.

Did you have a high libido before?

I'd say regualar-not crazy low but not high either

Yes, I think that's correct as I know quite a few other women that have normal to high sex drives while on Diane.
