Hi, sorry- I'm not here to answer your question but to ask you one rather. I really really want to go on accutane, & I'm going to ask my dermatologist about it next week (that's when my appointment is) but is it necessary to wait a couple months? Since you've mentioned that you're getting it done in September... would I be able to get it done sooner? Cause I really want to be on it ASAP. :wall:

& I suppose you don't have to take BCP if you're not sexually active? I mean, I find it really unncessary. Ahh, thanks for reading.. Hope to hear a response soon :)

It is a law that you have to be on BC...no Derm will be able to give Accutane to you unless you've been on a BC for at least a month. good luck.

I am not sure if it has changed. But, I was not on birth control at the time I was on accutane. My fiance and I clearly made a choice to abstain while I was on accutane. And, that is exactly what I told the doctor. I may have signed something to that promise, but not sure. This was 4 years ago.

How do they know if you're on the pill or not?

What if you use condoms everytime? I'm sure condoms are just as effective in preventing pregnancy

*cough*

 Thats not quite true.... It's not as black and white as that.

It depends entirely on what country who live in....

In england that is not that 'law' :naughty:

I have been put on accutane and I am on no form of BC.

I am using a very simple method of BC - it's called not having sex :D

i don't think that its a law that u have to take BCP because in cali where i live (i've been on accutane for 3 months now) my derm asked if i was having sex i said no and he asked if i wanted to take BCP just in case, i said no because i was going to be abstinent (i haven't had sex and i don't want to just yet anyway) so he said that as long as i was abstinent then i didn't have to take the BCP

well my derm did ask me if i was sexually active... i said ya cuz i have a bf but i could abstain for my accutane treatment... after that he was reluctant and told me he wont give me accutane without putting me on bcp...i should have lied! lol

im not sure where u live but in the u.k i think that any type of birth control,is acceptable.if you just use condoms you would need to get a 2nd type of control, just to be 100%safe.but that could be coil, cap etc...not only pills.

My derm told me that even if im on bcp i would be expected to use condoms since the bc is not 100% effective. The reason i dont want to go on bcp is because i have been on diane35 for a few months and it didnt help my acne (made things worse), made me gain 10lbs (even though im quite active) and made me extremely emotional (crying every day). I stopped taking diane 3 weeks ago and i have already lost some weight and the daily emotions have gone down dramatically. These are the reasons i dont want to go back on birth control when i start accutane in the fall. I guess I could fake it or just take the chance and do another brand of bcp (like alesse) and accutane. The only thing that worries me is that my derm told me that if i would show any emotional signs of depression, sadness, crying while on accutane, then he would have to pull me off of it. But in my case if I would be on bcp then the "crying" might not be brought on by the accutane, it might be the doing of the bcp and thats another reason that i dont want to go back on birht control. arghhh decisions, decisions...

hello,..im not sure where you live but if you live in the uk,i would really recommend going to your local family planning centre for advice...they are usually much better informed about womens contraception than your doctor..i found the one i went to was really helpful and informed about accutane etc...it may be best for you to use another method of b.c other than the pill...personally i would worry about all the different chemicals/hormones ,if i took accutane at the same time as the pill...it would also depend on your age etc...wether the coil, would be suitable for you..good luck anyway!X

Not all BCPs make you gain weight. I've never heard of that brand... try to find one that has a lower estrogen dosage--they have fewer side effects all around.

In the U.S. i think the policy is if you're a woman, you have to have 2 forms of birth control listed, so maybe abstinence and condoms would do it... or condoms and BCP, or condoms and spermicide, or IUD and condoms, etc. if you want accutane. but i don't know the exact wording. in my opinion, it's a good thing because i'd rather use a birth control method i wouldn't normally use if it meant i wouldn't accidentally get pregnant (however small the chance) and end up with a messed-up baby i'd have to take care of for the rest of my life.

besides... what's 10 pounds here or there temporarily to get the skin you want? weight's a lot easier to fix, plus much less visible to other people than your face. so it seems your choice is BCPs for a few months, MAYBE gain a little weight, clear skin... or no BCP, no accutane, messed up face.

and don't lie to doctors... about anything. they can't tell anyone your secrets, so why lie? my friend lied about taking BCPs and then found out (by reading the package insert) that one of the medications she was prescribed interacted with birth control and could have had a serious problem if she hadn't called back and told the truth. there's a reason they ask all those questions...

btw, i work at a pharmaceutical company in pharmacovigilance and a lot of serious problems that get reported are from people who either don't listen to their doctors, don't read labels, or do things they think will help them without consulting a doctor first... and for special meds like accutane it's best to talk to a specialist, not just a general practitioner.

I don't think the derm would really know or check to see if you are on BC. If you lied and said you were, then the derm would never really know.

I really don't think its a law that you have to be on BC if you are a woman on accutane.

If you take the route of not taking it and do have sex, you have to realize, as awful as it may sound, not to offend anyone in any way, that if you did get pregnant you would have to terminate the pregnancy. That is something to think long and hard about.

I have even heard that there in that case the doctors can even intercept the preganancy, and not "force" you to terminate but talk you into it, even if you are against it.

I think this whole ipledge thing was designed to prevent women from being almost forced into terminating pregnancy. The FDA is run by the government, and our government is currently in the hands of republicans that are predominantly pro-life.
