Before the Journey!

A little background about my skin- I had bad painful cystic acne when I was a teenager. When my parents finally took me to the dermatologist after failed attempts with drugstore products, I was put on Accutane for seven months. I was 17-18 years old at the time. It was a life saver! My skin was no longer dripping with oil and the cystic acne was gone. However, because my treatment was so delayed I was left with a lot of indented scarring particularly on my forehead, temples, and my cheeks. It didn’t bother me too much at the time because it was such a big improvement compared to how it used to be.

In college I went to a dermatologist to inquire about what could be done for the acne scars since it was a couple of years since my accutane treatment. She said that the only thing that could help was laser treatments and that I would probably need about three sessions. I would have to go to a plastic surgeon for that. I didn’t have the money for it at the time so I put it on hold.

Fast forward to now - a few weeks ago I made an appointment with a medical spa out of town that does laser treatments. (I have limited options living in a smaller town.)  I used to work outside as an environmental scientist and now that I work inside in a chemistry laboratory I felt now was the right time to get this done since I wouldn’t have to worry about excessive sun exposure. I was diagnosed with lupus and Sjögren’s syndrome three years ago and because of the lupus, the doctor said she couldn’t do any lasers or derma-needling on my face because it might trigger a lupus flare. (My lupus is quite mild and under control. It was caught early enough before there was any organ involvement. It has only affected my joints and muscles-not my skin.) You can imagine how crushed I was at this. She prescribed me a skin lightener that includes hydroquinone, Kojic acid, tetrinoin and a couple of other acids to help with the discoloration. She wants me to try this first before trying anything else. She said one possibility could be punch excisions later on. Although the lightener may help with the overall appearance it isn’t  enough for me. I want to do something about the actual indentions. I did some research online and came across info about TCA cross. I think this is worth a shot and will be documenting my results. I will be doing this at home with a 30% strength.
