Worries

I am a 17 year old female and I've just started accutane or isotretinoin as it's known in England (I think? Anyway, I would really like some advice or guidance from someone who has either finished or is further along with their accutane experience. My acne hasn't gotten worse like I was told it would and I have been taking it for over a week now. Should I be concerned? I would really appreciate some help!!

Hey! I'm on accutane since 2 months and half ago. Accutane is the name of the commercial product in some countries, the official name of the chemical substance is international and it's isotretinoin. I would say you can expect an initial breakout anytime during your first 2 months of treatment, after that time it's not usual for people to experience it.  In fact, you should start to see results since the second month of treatment with isotretinoin. However, everyone is different and your experience could be different for mine. I would say that isotretinoin is not too bad like everyone says, it's a drug and it must have be treated like what it is, but I repeat, it's not too bad. Keep in mind that even if you don't see results you have to go on because when you are not expecting it, your skin will start to heal. Give it time and hope. Hope this helps.

HEY GIRL.

I'm in my 5th week of accutane and I was feeling just like you. I basically found that I my break outs didn't get any worse -- but I did keep breaking out. I think my break outs have slowed down a little, but it's always hard to tell.

Everyone is different, some people break out, some people don't. Just know that if you keep on it, you'll be 100% clear soon.

My derm told me there is actually only a small chance of getting an IB if your acne is in control around the time you start. Patients with a lot of below-the-surface zits experience "worsening" because everything is being pushed up. Others just have their normal breakouts, or they completely stop after a month due to the sebaceous glad closing itself. The reason it seems like everyone has an IB is because everyone specifically comes here to vent about things like that. My derm said something like 25% have an IB. Did you ever get an awful breakout?
