Hello Guys & Girls,
So, like many of the people on Acne.org, I have decided to start a week by week diary of my experience with Accutane.
I had so many questions and concerns before starting the course, and I probably drove my Derm a little nuts with all of my endless questioning. I must have been on every site to do with acne and skin just to find out as much as possible as I could about other experiences with this so called 'miracle cure'.
A little background, I have suffered with moderately severe acne since I was 15, I am now 22 and though it's not as bad as it was before, it's still not great. I have been through all of the antibiotics, lymacycline, erythromycin and recently trimethoprim (the BEST!) and now that i've become immune to them all I have to start looking for a more final treatment. When I went to see my Derm she recommended Ro/accutane and so here we are...
Start date: Friday 31st October
Course length: 6 months
I've just finished my first week on 20mg/day and I've only noticed the following side effects:
- Dry lips (they don't lie about this...I feel like I'm going through a stick of balm a day!)
- Dry eyes (but I did have lasik last year, so I might feel this more than people who haven't undergone that surgery)
- Skin on my face isn't dry, but it is quite sensitive...
- I don't think I've hit the initial breakout just yet, but I have noticed spots coming up around my chin/temples/cheeks. They seem to rise and whitehead quite quickly. i did pop one yesterday and it just kept seeping...(sounds a bit gross, but just painting a picture for you...). They aren't cysts, just like normal spots but carrying a little more inside them. I'm not sure if this is what people are talking about when they say that everything comes to the surface!
That's about it really, I think I"m more worried about what will happen when my does goes to 40mg/day which will be in another week.
Current prescription: 20mg/day Accutane for first 2 weeks, then 40mg/day for the next 4 weeks
My Derm also gave me a months supply of erythromycin (I have been on it before but I didn't become immune since I switched to trimethoprim shortly after I started as I heard it was better) to curb the IB.
Current Skin regime:
La Roche Posay - Effaclar H foam cleanser
La Roche Posay - Effaclar H moisuriser
(Derm recommended this range as it's made specially for people on accutane)
So I will keep you updated each week, but week 1 has been pretty mild...! Perhaps the calm before the storm, I don't know...
