Proactiv Stopped Working

Hey guys, I'm almost nineteen and have had acne since seventh grade. The summer before eighth grade I went to a dermatologist and was given a couple of topical creams and oral meds, and those cleared my skin up but made it very red with extremely dry and oily patches. Then the meds stopped working altogether the summer before my junior year of high school so I started Proactiv. I had amazing results with Proactiv, not only did it clear my skin up completely but it reduced the oil and completely took away the dryness. This summer Proactiv has stopped working to prevent acne, it heals it sort of quickly once its on the surface, but no longer prevents it, and I am breaking out horribly! I tried going on Proactiv's website to ask them what was happening, and nobody responded. I start college tomorrow, this is not how I envisioned beginning the next four years of my life and I don't want to be stressing about my skin when I need to be focused on classes! I can't find anything that says what people used after Proactiv stopped working for them, and the customer service people at Proactiv won't help me. I feel completely alone in this, I am the only one of my friends who has acne so none of them understand what it's like to try everything and still feel like you're looking at someone else's face when you look in the mirror. I don't know what to do, somebody please help me!

I don't know your gender so I'll just tell you what I use. If you are female it will work for you. If you are male try accutane.

here goes:

100mg spironolactone

Tri-Sprintec birth control pill

Cephalexin 500mg 3x a day

Well,it did stopped working for me and my daughter ,this is what we use ,I did some googling about acne and popular or best over the counter because when proactiv stopped working, we had to visit the dermatologist, my daughter was put on ziana , and I was given retin a,and antibiotics for both , well we kept breaking out,so this is what we use .

Neutrogena clear pore cleanser/mask

Neutrogena rapid clear fight and fade toner

The treatment,2.5,benzoyl peroxide from acne.org

Clean and clear dual action moiturizer ,oil free.

Sometimes in the shower after washing our faces with the clear pore ,we use Neutrogena deep clean cream cleanser to exfoliate ,we leave it for 3,4minutes,then rinse .

We do this twice a day .

And as someone said ,I don't know if you are a girl ,then you could use ortho tricyclin the bc pill ,brand name only ,works better than the generic .

My son was put on solodin and differin

It worked for him ,and after a while .,like 4 or 5 years on differin he got tired and clear ,now he only uses cerave foam cleanser and acnomel,to spot treat .

For my daughter and I ,things are more complicated ,women use make-up,so we use simple cleansing wipes or the blue Neutrogena wipes, also we use loreal beautifier bb cream .

Oh and we also use swisspers hypoallergenic cotton rounds to apply the toner.

Proactiv stopped working for me too even after using the extra strength line (10% Benzoyl Peroxide) where it actually made my skin worse! It never really cleared up my skin entirely but it kept some of my acne under control. The 2.5% strength was what I started out with and after stopping the line it made me breakout way worse. I had blackheads more than ever on my cheeks, jawline and more on my forehead that didn't go away.

What did I do?

It took me a long time to realize that I had to go to my Dermatologist to see what can be done professionally. I was already getting facials every 2 months or so but it wasn't enough. My doctor put me on doxycycline for the active cystics, spironolactone for the hormonal acne, Tazorac for the congestion with blackheads and whiteheads, and Acanya (Benzoyl Peroxide and Clindamycin) topicals to treat and prevent new breakouts.

I have tried many methods and going to my Dermatologist was the best move I've ever done for my acne. Professional treatment was what worked for me after the damage Proactiv did to my skin....
