Differin 3% Experience

1237 views

I decided I wanted to tell people about my experience with differin so I figured I would start a blog on here! Background on my skin, I started getting acne when I was in 6th grade, never severe but pretty moderate. Then my freshman year I decided to go on birth control to see if it would help, and it did a little bit but not much. During my sophomore year i found out I have sensitive skin that reacts badly to benzoyl peroxide, harsh face scrubs, and some other random things. Lucky me, right? At the end of my sophomore year I went to a dermatologist who prescribed me differin 3% and doxycycline. It took the full three months to get any results. I had no changes in the first month, just some minor flaking but moisturizer took care of it, the second month my skin began to purge these big painful pimples that seemed to take forever to clear up. And in the third month my skin was clear but more oily. At my three month check up he said I could try switching to the 1% to see if it would help with the oiliness. So I did. And that was the stupidest thing to do. My skin stayed clear for maybe two more months but then began to break out all over again. I was pissed. It was my junior year and I was back to feeling so insecure about my face that I would stay home sometimes just to try and clear it up faster. During christmas break I went back to using the 3% and my skin was awful. It was red, dry, and irritated. My skin was peeling off and leaving me with raw patches that only aquaphor would heal. You know how when your sunburns starting to heal and you peel off chunks of dead skin? That's what my face was doing. In May my face was still breaking out, but it was also so dry. I would get out of the shower and it would literally be a layer of dead skin on my face that you could see. It was like differin was just tearing my face apart. I tried cetaphil, cerave, ponds, clean and clear, and aveeno moisturizers and nothing worked. I switched to a cream cleanser by burts bees and it helped some but didn't take it away completely. My parents decided it was time to go back to the dermatologist and I asked for ziana and aczone. He said it was a good idea so I am now using those prescriptions. I will be tracking my progress! I don't know why my skin reacted so badly to the 3% differin the second time I used it but I will never go back to it. I know it works great for other people and I'm glad it does but it just didn't do it for me!

I'll hit my three month mark on the first of November and right now my skin is so-so. I switched to a new face wash at the beginning of this month and it made me break out like crazy so I still have some scarring from that. I also purchased a Clarisonic Mia 2 and have been using that for a week now and all the bumps that were under my skin are starting to come to the surface. I do like the ziana, it clears my pimples up faster and is gentle. I'm sorry that your purging! It sucks and makes it seem like it'll never get better but just stick to your regimen and see what happens!

Thanks for the help!! I was kind of praying you would say that your skin was flawless now. I use the clarisonic and I love it! I use the cashmere head because it is very soft and not too harsh with my skin. I use Paula's Choice Pore refining cleanser. You may want to look into that. Before switching face washes was your skin better? I am just curious if I should switch treatments. I am wondering if I haven't given Ziana enough time yet. My doctor said it should be better around 6 weeks and now she is saying 3 months :(

My skin was a lot better before switching cleansers! I only had some slight scarring that was fading fairly fast and then one slightly big pimple before switching cleansers :( I'm also on birth control and I noticed that if I don't take it religiously at the same time every day my skin will break out more often than usual. I Was actually looking at the Neutrogena Pore refining cleanser but I might hold off on it and see what my skin does in the next couple months. What kind of acne do you have??

I have hormonal acne. It is all along my jawline and my chin. Since starting Ziana, I only get white heads. I have had 6 white heads appear in the last 5 days. It is probably mild-moderate. Before starting Ziana it was mild. I stopped dairy just in case that helps ( I haven't noticed a difference). I started evening primrose oil just in case vitamins help. Have you ever seen if you have PCOS? Google it. I have it and I know that causes my acne. Birth control is God's gift to women!! I'm on seasonique and only have a period once every three months.

I haven't ever heard of PCOS! I'm not sure if that's what causes mine or not since mines hormonal too. I was put on OrthoCyclen my sophomore year (two years ago) and I never noticed a difference in my skin until I forgot to take it for like a week and my skin went crazy. I got a lot of white heads too after starting Ziana but they would go away after a couple days. I also was prescribed Aczone. What's your current regimen??

I am on doxycycline 150mg and Ziana. I am also on seasonique birth control. This girl is on the same regimen as you

Her skin is why I am still truing Ziana. If it wasn't for her videos I would have given up.

I've seen her videos! I swear I've seen every video ever made regarding ziana and read every review too. Her videos gave me more hope though for some reason, I guess since she looks like she's closer to my age lol. Is this your first acne treatment?

My skin started to clear up at the end of month two. I went through a purging phase too that lasted awhile.

Hahaha no. This is my 10000th treatment. I am 24. I started getting acne around 14. I used retina A. Then I used differin .3. The differin .3 cleared my skin for the most part, but I still would get breakouts occasionally and I am looking for no breakouts. I tried Paula's Choice BHA and that made my skin the worst it has ever been. Now I am trying Ziana. Along with the Ziana I am also doing the tribeam laser. The laser clears out pores, stops oil production, and exfoliates the top layer of skin. This is my dermatologists blog http://whitecoattreatment.com. I had chemical peels in high school, but they didn't do anything. I also had microdermabrasions monthly in high school. Those made my skin gorgeous. Everyone would compliment me when I was having those done.

Oh man, I'm sorry! I hope the Ziana works for you! I read that the clarisonic purges your skin for the first couple weeks so I'm really hoping that my face will start to clear up soon. Did your clarisonic break you out?

Clarisonic didn't purge my skin at all. It only made my skin smoother. I think some people purge because the xlarisonic makes your products work better. I definitely recommend the sensitive head because you are fair the acne head or deep cleansing head can causes broken capillaries. Also only use it at night

I'm using the delicate brush head with the Cerave Hydrating Cleanser and I use it on the low speed at night. It's my time of the month so I'm thinking that's why I'm starting to break out. I don't know anymore lol I just want clear skin, dammit.

Tell me about it! Hold out. You're very young. You'll more than likely outgrow it. Trust me, acne as a teen is much better than acne as an adult. You're doing everything right. In a few months your skin will be flawless. In years you'll have better skin than all your friends (the Ziana prevents wrinkles and big pores and tone issues). All my friends who never battled acne have problems with tone and wrinkles because they never had to develop a skincare routine. It only gets better with time!
