I am writing this mainly to have all my notes about my experience with the Regimen in the same place. At this point in my life I am 34 years old and I've been struggling with acne for several years. I would say acne was not a very big problem in my teenage years, but from my 20's on I noticed a significant worsening, possibly due to more and more years on the hormone rollercoaster that is the menstrual period.
Typically, I experience breakouts about a week before my period, and then they mostly die off and I continue to have one or two zits the rest of the month. Additionally, I have extremely oily skin and I usually have to blot out the excess oil a few times a day. When my zits go away I end up with darkened scars that don't go away and as a result my skin tone is very uneven. This leads me to use make up, which I suspect helps nothing in the long term.
I started The Regimen about two weeks ago (I forgot exactly what day I started) and today is Day 1 of Week 3. My skin is irritated, dry and peeling, especially on my temples and around the mouth. I've had a breakout on my forehead two days ago but today they seem to be getting better.
The First Week I used Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash (contains salicylic acid) and Neutrogena On-The-Spot (2.5% BP).. I experienced irritation and dryness as expected. I thought this was working well enough so I didn't bother to look for the Neutrogena Extra Gentle face wash.
The Second Week I continued to use the same products. There was more dryness and peeling, and even though I had some breakouts I decided to use the Olay Microdermabrassion & Peel system on one night because I had to go out and wanted to wear makeup. This helped the makeup go on smoother but my forehead breakouts appeared a couple of days after this. I know I shouldn't have done this but it was a one time deal. At the end of Week Two I received my order of Cleanser and Treatmen from Acne.org so I started using those. I still have a bit of Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash but it'll be all gone in a couple days.
Among other things: I stopped using Skin79 Pink BB cream two days ago, after I found that it contains a highly comedogenic ingredient. It sucks because I love the convenience of BB creams but I hope I can find a more suitable, similar product in the near future. As of today, I used a bit of concealer on my red spots and Maybelling loose powder (non-comedogenic) to reduce shine and even out skin tone a litle bit. I feel weird withou foundation because I am self-conscious about acne scars and discoloration. I hope that either the dryness goes away so I can go back to my foundation, or that my skin gets better and I will feel confident about not wearing make up.
P.S.: Even though I did not follow the Regimen 100% on the first couple weeks, I still see some improvement. My skin is not too sensitive so even though I used a face wash with salicylic acid, I did not feel much irritation (at least not more than expected). I think so far, so good and I'm going to stick with this even if it takes slightly longer than usual.
