Acne Struggle

I have struggled with acne since I was a teenager. I was always told that when I get older it will get better.... Well they were wrong!!!!! I still have acne and I am 24 years old. But not only that but it was waayyyyyy worse than it has ever been. It has gotten so bad that I don't even want to get out of the house. I do because I have to. I have tried almost every acne regimen out there and nothing has worked. I used this one soap that had 10% benzoyl peroxide in it gave me a chemical burn. Ever since then I haven't been able to use things that are very harsh. I have to use a bar of soap (dial) to wash my face. I have went to the doctor thinking maybe it was my hormones... nope I have had my blood drawn several times and they have run several test and everything has come back normal. I have been put on doxycycline, prednisone, amoxicillin, retin- a. Nothing has really worked. The prednisone has worked the best for it but once I get off anything it starts back up again. I am still using the retin-a which is extremely painful and is actually making my face worse. I am at the point that I don't know what to do. I cry about it everyday. Nothing has worked for me. I look around and here are all of these people who have perfect skin. I just wonder why.... why do I have such terrible skin when I wash my face twice a day and try to take care of it. I have an appointment with the dermatologist in a couple of months but I am just worried that they are going to just put me on antibiotics. I feel like these are just band-aide fixes. They fix the problem until you get off of them. I feel like there is a root cause as to why my face won't clear up. I feel like I have been struggling with this for tooo long and I am ready to have flawless skin.

Hang in there. Im 25 still get acne, cystic acne. You are not alone. I feel ya on the bandaid fixes. Thats how I feel. Prednisone is great for cysts. However long term it will make your acne worse so just be careful. It supresses your immune system allowing baterica, acne bateria to thrive. I know I should say the same thing to myself. I run to the derm for it when I cant afford an injection.

The only other thing I can suggest for you is having your thyroid checked. Maybe your gut checked? Cut off dairy , white flour, reduce sugar intake, try a liver detox. Some times these things correlate.

Im not sure if your male or female. But birth control is an option. I do not recommend it bc it messes u up and like you said may just put a bandaid on the situation. It willcome back worse once your off. Happend to me. True story lol

Send you postive vibes. If anything know you are not the only one dealing with this.

Since we are stating our ages I am 39 and without my antibiotic I break out really bad. I know the feeling of not wanting to be dependent on medications but it is our reality. I use tretinoin, benzaclin, topical clindamycin and amoxicillin. With that combination I am pretty much clear. An occasional really small white head that dissolves when I wash my face. Don't give up on finding a regimen that works for you. You are doing the right thing by seeing a dermatologist. Never give up! Peace!

Don't give up hope! I'm 31 and have been breaking out since I was 14. I've done just about every treatment there is - over-the-counter stuff, prescription topical stuff, medication, diet, etc. I started Dan's regimen probably... 2 years ago. It has helped more than anything else. My face is 100% clear the majority of the time. I will still get the intermittent breakout, but typically just one very superficial blemish that clears within a day or two, and very rarely a larger and deeper one that lingers a bit longer. It's now the exception, not the rule. Now I do Cera-ve non-foaming cleanser, Dan's benzoyl gel, and Cetaphil moisturizer with some jojoba oil mixed in, twice a day. I'll admit I was MISERABLE on his regimen for a solid 6 months - redness, peeling, pain, breakouts... horrible. But I stuck it out and it got better! The jojoba really helped. I'm thinking of adding in some AHA to exfoliate (if I do manual exfoliation I KNOW I'll break out soon after, but man I miss the feeling of freshly scrubbed skin!) - I admit I'm a little worried if it will mess up the balance I have going on.

You're not alone and don't give up. I totally get it though - the not wanting to leave the house or see anyone. I hope you find something that works for you, and consider Dan's regimen if you haven't yet. Good luck!
