Cystic Acne For 7 Years

Hey All. I'm 25 and have been suffering from severe cystic acne since I was 18. I went on Accutane and it temporarily resolved my cysts for 1 year. They're on my chin area and jaw line and there's always about 4 of them but one really big one. After the year of being "free of cysts" I've had a bunch of Cortisone injections up to today, I can't even count how man. If you name an antibiotic & a face wash, I've taken it or used it. Always, always after the Cortisone injections my cysts would go away and I would be clear & worry free.. until about two or three months later & my face would just break out in cysts again and there I'd go, back to the dermatologist again getting another Cortisone injection, which was usually two injections each visit. This has been my life repeatedly since I was 18, cyst break out, go on antibiotic, it goes away, get Cortisone injections, do hot compress, get them again three months later.

Well now, May of 2013 I broke out again and started seeing a new dermatologist. He said that I could have a sac in my skin that needs to be removed... which makes sense since they keep coming back in the exact same spots. And I've even had them lanced & drained before too and they still come back. He referred me to see a plastic surgeon, well the plastic surgeon doesn't do that type of surgery & he's saying it's not those type of cysts that I have (sebaceous cyst) which I still think it is because if there's a sac under my skin it just keeps filling up every couple of months until I get another injection. This is my NEW problem that I've NEVER had before and it started in May. I was on an antibiotic that I found out I was allergic to and then put on Doxycycline for 2 weeks, then another two weeks I was on it and then for another two weeks after that I was on something else, don't remember the name.

Well, since May my face has gotten drastically worse as each day passed. I had a Cortisone injection at the end of May, it did absolutely nothing which that's never happened before, then another in June & it didn't do anything as well. Then in July I had the big once lanced and it went down for about 1 week & then just filled right back up. So the new problem is my entire jawline and chin area has (the same cysts I've gotten since I was 18) and on top of that I'm getting whiteheads, pimples, scabbing up they look like cuts, and my whole chin/jawline area is just sooo RED and there's something new popping up on my face EVERY DAY which I started noticing about 2 weeks ago. I've never seen my face like this before & I'm just so aggravated and fed up with it and not knowing what is going on. After the Accutane I never broke out in pimples and it's just weird that I am now and it's in the same area as my cysts. If anyone has any comments, please feel free to leave them. No one around me knows what it's like to have cystic acne so I'm hoping someone on here does know.

It sounds like it could be hormonal, I'm not sure what the best way for girls to deal with that is but I know there's a bunch of good info here to be found. Other than that, accutane might be an effective treatment even though you've taken it already. I know what it's like to constantly have cysts pop up on your face after an accutane course which is why I'm currently on my second one. I stopped getting cysts within the first two weeks which has been great. Although I still get spots eleven weeks in, they are much less frequent and go away much faster than the cysts. Not having to deal with those little cysts pains when you make a certain facial expression or move your head a certain way makes a huge difference alone. Good luck with everything.

For hormonal acne I have heard that spironolactone can help but it works after about six months of use...Peace!

For the redness at least, you might try giving aloe vera a shot. I used the pulp of the aloe vera on my face at night and even drank aloe vera juice mixed with OJ and I noticed some improvement in the redness of my skin. I haven't gone on Accutane myself although my dermatologist recommended it to me but I'm guessing you had to go on birth control beforehand. It could be something to look into, I'm supposed to be trying the spironolactone in a few months but was told I need to be on birth control first.

Thanks everyone for your input. I was able to get into an appointment yesterday with a dermatologist and showed pictures from May to now and showed how bad it got and nothing was helping. She put me on Spironolactone and said it's hormonal and if that doesn't work, I'll have to go on Accutane again, which I really don't want to. My Cholesterol was so high so I had to go on Cholesterol medication and even with the medication it was still high.. we will see though.. She showed me like 8 or 10 cysts on my face yesterday & I didn't think I had THAT many. There's the one big one and a medium sized one and a bunch of small ones around it and they're all connecting.. :-/ Still doesn't explain why I'm breaking out in pimples & whiteheads though, which I've never gotten since being off Accutane when I was a teen.
