Week Four -- Some Advice On Drinking On Accutane

Well my third week was a success as my skin began to clear more and more. It's funny how the more clear your skin gets, the more confident and happy you feel emotionally. Have been dealing with acne for the past couple of months, it was a total refresher to finally look in the mirror and have clear skin rather than pimply oily skin.

Some of you newbies to accutane (more specifically the younger ones) may be concerned about drinking alcohol while undergoing your course. Here is my personal advice:

The first time I was on accutane I was just beginning college, so staying away from drinking was really hard. At first I was paranoid about the whole thing and wouldn't even have a beer but then I started pushing my limits. While undergoing my 20 week treatment, there were probably four or five times where I got completely plastered, and all of my liver work still came back fine.

This time around, I admit I tried to have a differenty mindset, but last weekend there was a party for my brother in law comiing up that I had been anticipating for quite some time. I told myself I would only have a few drinks, but ended up getting completely plastered, which led to hoarsing around, which actually led to my brother in law accidently tackling me down and giving me a concussion! The whole week I was feeling guily about drinking while on accutane.

Basically, you have to think of it this way: The doctor tells you not to drink while on accutane because of how taxing accutane AND alcohol are on your liver. You have to realize that everyone's liver is different, meaning some people can drink on accutane and be fine, while other will not. But is it really worth risking your doctor taking you off the drug? The last thing you want is to go back to dealing with acne just because you couldnt go 20 short weeks without drinking alcohol. Also, you have to think about the dehydration effects you will experience. Accutane dries you out completely, as does alcohol, which mean your hangover will be twice as bad... trust me, i know! It's not worth it.

That's why I made a decision to not drink the remainder of my 20 weeks. I went out last night with a bunch of friends who I haven't seen in awhile and sipped water the whole night. I actually still had a great time, had no guilt, and didn't feel like death in the morning!

So all in all, the choice is yours if you want to choose to drink on accutane, but I would recommend not drinking at all or keeping it only at a glass of wine or a beer. It's just not worth the risk!

Anyways, I am psyched that we are already coming on week four! I am getting my blood work done next week and having an appointment with my dermotologist on Thursday where I will discuss with him bumping up the dosage to 70mg -- we are being aggressive! My skin is looking great. My initial breakout is still lingering, but its good because my skin is cleaning out every single pore in my face, and healing it quite fast.
