The First day of Accutane

August 17th 2011

Just got my first monthly prescription from my dermatologist for 40 mg daily.

I am really excited about going on this and at the same time a little nervous.

I'm a 17 year old who is going into his last year of high school hoping to get rid of his acne by Christmas. I've had acne since I was about 13 but it slowly got worse and worse until there wasn't a place on my face without some kind of spot! A few cysts here and there as well as inflammatory stuff. I start school in 3 weeks and am hoping to get the possible initial breakout out of the way. I have been using Benzoyl Peroxide on and off for about 2-3 years and for the most part it has helped. There was even a time when I only had about 2 pimples on my face! Sadly, it came back. I also tried Doxycycline for about 3 months but there were also no improvements. My Dad had acne quite a bit on his back when he was younger so I assume it is hereditary. There really isn't much you can do about your genes!

Acne hasn't been too much of a problem socially as I try to keep positive no matter what but It would be nice to finally have a clear face. Friends seem to either not notice, not care or are really understanding about the situation. I'm hoping to get in a relationship once this mess blows over (gotta be optimistic) :) ! I wish I could trade this terrible mess for something that I could actually fight against like weight loss or something.

It still being the summer and all I am really upset that I'll be sensitive to the sun. I worked up such a great tan in the last month and a half! Guess I'll have to lather on that sun screen 24/7. I'm prepared to use lip balm lots as well as just a gentle cleanser and lots of moisturizer. I'll also be playing soccer with my school's varsity team and training is starting next week so hopefully I won't get to sore!
