Hello, after reading a few blogs on peoples' experiences with Iso. I thought it would be a good idea to start a journal of my experiences.
I'm 34 and developed acne again about 3 months ago. I'm not sure exactly what caused it, but it may have been a mix of stress and using jojoba oil as a cleanser. Not sure. Anyhow, tried everything and hoped that it would just resolve. I've always been prone to acne and break out every now and again, but nothing like this.
Benzoyl products work minimally, so went to a dermatologist. He informed me that for some reason my sebaceous glands had flared up and were overproducing sebum. My form of acne will not go away with usual topical treatments or antibiotics (which I had been using in the interim between GP visit and Dermatologist visit, with no effect).
Unfortunately I have large sebaceaous glands that have gotten out of control, and to rid myself of my chronic acne, Isotretinoin was the only treatment - to physically shrink my oil glands. This doesn't surprise me, as I have been on Iso twice before; once when I was 14 and then again at 16. Not fun either time, but having acne is tiring and really quite damaging to self-esteem.
My dermatologist also prescribed dexmethisone to reduce inflammation of the acne eruptions. This is a cortisone, so I'm slightly concerned about longterm use of this, but it does seem to be working on reducing the redness and inflammation around my spots.
Today I took my first tablet: 1 x 20mg per day.
I guess I'm lucky in some ways, as I've been through the process before and have some expectations about what will occur, however, it's been a while and my body and skin may react differently than before, so in some ways i'm a bit anxious too.
Acne does suck, and i'm looking forward to clear skin. I don't want to have survived adolescence with no acne scaring to now get it in my 30s, so that's why i'm keen on taking Iso. Also, i'm just tired of having to slather on coverup to reduce the visual impact of my acne.
I am a bit concerned about flareup and skin peeling as I work in an office and with clients, I don't really want to seem like i've got some crazy skin disease!!!
Also, my office is aircond, so i'm slightly worried about the extra drying of my skin and eyes. May have to get a humidified for my room!!
Well, I invite any comments and hope to hear from others with any tips of good products to reduce side effects. Also, i'd like to hear from anyone else in their 30s who are on Iso, and if the side effects are any different?
