As I mentioned in my first post, I am on day 13 of Accutane. So far the side effects haven't been too bad.
I actually haven't experienced too much dryness and I think it's due to the fact of where I live. Hawaii is really humid, which is a royal pain in the butt when you have super oily skin like I do, but on Accutane the humidity is keeping my skin at a really nice combo of dry but not too dry.
I have experienced chapped lips, but it's nothing a little Vaseline can't handle.
I've had a few headaches, but I take a some Ibuprofen and it goes away.
I was already shampooing my hair with Head and Shoulders due to the fact that before I was taking Accutane I was taking a butt load of vitamins that were causing my scalp to get a little flaky. It's working for the Accutane too, my scalp looks fine, no white flakes.
Here is one side effect I've had that is a little more unpleasant. My throat is irritated right now. I got this major Canker sore right next to my tonsil. Unfortunately, I read that if a canker sore is large enough and in that area of the mouth it can cause side effects like fever, swollen lymph nodes, and general discomfort. It can also take up to three weeks to heal.
At first I thought the Canker sore came from the fact that last week I had a random craving for Kim Chee, especially since I read that Kim Chee is really good for you, and I ate a ton of it. Since food allergies and spicy foods can cause Canker sores I assumed it was from that, but then I did a little research and found out that Accutane can cause Canker Sores and throat irritation while your body is still adjusting to it, and Accutane zaps the moisture from your body, majorly drying out your throat.
So that has been a royal pain that I'm still dealing with, but I've come up with a few things to ensure that it doesn't happen again: drink tons of water, chew gum to create saliva and keep the mouth moist, suck on cough drops or candy, take vitamins, and keep my mouth clean.
So to wrap it up, the side effects haven't been too bad so far (cross your fingers
And here is a run-down of everything I'm using to get through the Accutane experience more comfortably:
Head and Shoulders Shampoo to keep the flakage at bay.
Moisturizing body wash specifically for really dry skin.
Vaseline for my lips.
Garnier Fructis Moisture Rescue Fresh Cleansing Foam for my face
Calamine Lotion for Spot Treatment
Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion
I drink tons and tons of water.
Suck on Cough Drops.
Take Ibuprofen if I get a headache. ( I read that it's better to stay away from acetaphetamines when you're on Accutane)
I'm not a drinker anyway, but be careful about drinking alcohol when you're on Accutane. Limit your intake. Accutane is a blood thinner so it will only take a small amount of alcohol to have an effect on you.
