Acne VULGAR-is

AutreMonde

I'm a 17 year old female teen who has suffered from moderate acne vulgaris (common acne with a very appropriate name) since my 6th grade of middle school.

Allow me to introduce you to my skin:

Salut,

I live in the desert, so its 118 in the summer and often humid.. This means pore-clogging sweat and a lot of it, but I stay away from the sun and always wear sunscreen. My t-zone is oily, yet the rest of my face is normal to dry, so I have combination skin. I break out terribly on my cheeks and jaw line. I've tried almost everything under the sun but have found a couple things worth keeping (WHICH I'LL POST IN A LATER ENTRY) BP is my partial-hero, but Sal-Acid has been nothing more than an acquaintance. I'm extremely consistant with my routine.

I'm a rebel but have seen the error of my ways: I'm a picker, but I'm working on this...

I'm sort of obsessed with makeup cuz I'm so insecure with my face, but am smart enough to use oil free and non-comedogenic, change my sponge everyday, and remove it when I'm home from school. But lately, I haven't worn anything more than eyeliner, mascara, and some finishing powder. I'm still deciding which foundations to use. Recommendations are welcome..

I'm insecure and very upset with my appearance, but I'm generally okay coping with stress.. And since I'm an active theatre student, its important to have clear skin on stage. This also means I have to wear a lot of makeup for my performances...

I have a healthy diet and ride my bike to and from school so I get decent exersize. I sleep well and often... My parents didn't break out a lot to my knowledge, but I was told my sister had worse acne than I did when she was my age.. Her skin is clear now, we're 10 years apart. I know a lot of it is hereditary..

So what am I doing wrong?

And more importantly, what can I do to make it go away?

Sincerely,

- e

I am 26 and I think my bad acne started around 16... I was unfortunate and really didn't pay attention ( and had no health insurance) until later when I decided to go to a dermatologist. I, like you tried everything over the counter, and my acne might also have a hereditary component. Unfortunately I also have scars but now I have the means to treat all of it.... After trying trying everything that is over the counter I became allergic to benzoil peroxide...Then I started going to the dermatologist and he prescribed a tetracycline and birth control... both helped A LOT!! then he gave me two ointments to use... and it was all good for about a year.....the story continues but you might want to start there... try tetracyclines (prescription) and birth control (even if you are not having sex) they truly help and hopefully for you they help long term...

I also don't have insurance, but I did just begin a birth control ( Tri-Sprintec) a little bit ago from a planned parenthood. The doctor told me my acne could get worse before it improves, I hope this won't be too bad! Thanks for the input. What ointments did your doctor prescribe? HOw bad was your acne, and did it improve at all?
