Starting something new

Just a little background.

I've always struggled with mild acne. You know, you get a few, they go away, you get a few more. I've never had perfectly clear skin.

When I got married seven years ago, I went on birth control for obvious reasons. In September of 2009, with much thought, I decided to go off my birth control, not because we wanted to get pregnant, but because I was sick of being on birth control and was ready to feel like myself again.

I had read a lot of blogs and posts about women who had stopped their birth control only to break out terribly. I was prepared that this might happen. However, two weeks after stopping birth control, I had crystal clear skin! I was so excited and thought maybe I was just one of the lucky ones. However, within two months my skin started breaking out again. Nothing terrible, just a few here and there.

Then December came. It was like going through puberty all over again! My entire right cheek was covered in cystic acne. My jaw line was also covered along with my back and chest. I thought perhaps it would go away once my hormones adjusted. However, by the end of the month it was only getting worse.

I had used Proactiv about 6 years ago with great results, so I thought I would give it a try again. I began Proactiv on January 8th, 2010. I was diligent in my skin care routine. I used the three step system in the morning and at night I washed my face with Cetaphil to remove my makeup. I then followed up with the three step system. After four weeks, there was absolutely no improvement and I was becoming completely discouraged. Depression was beginning to set it and my skin only seemed to be getting worse.

After five weeks of using Proactiv without missing one day, I decided something had to change. I woke up with new acne every day.

So yesterday, February 13th, 2010, I began the Clinique Acne System after reading a lot of reviews and posts. I first wash with a Foaming Cleanser from Clinique to remove all my makeup to allow the acne cleanser to do it's job. I then follow up with the three step Clinique system. My skin does feel a little tight afterwards but I expected that as well. I also believe that the Proactiv scrub, step 1, was irritating my skin because it is so course. The Clinique cleanser is very light and foamy and two pumps is plenty to treat the skin. It is important that you use a separate cleanser to remove your makeup. The acne cleanser is not designed to remove makeup.

I followed the system with the Claryifying Lotion and the benzoyl peroxide lotion. My starter kit also came with a spot healing gel. Using a Q-tip, I applied a small amount to each of my larger bumps, crossed my fingers and went to bed.

I woke up this morning both excited and terrified to look in the mirror. What if it was worse? I'm not sure I could handle that. So I looked in the mirror. To my amazement, I had no new acne!!!! This is the first day I've not had a new pimple in almost four months. The acne that I have is drying up and my skin is not irritated at all! I'm so excited. I'm not getting my hopes up that this is my cure all for acne, but there is a significant amount of relief that comes from knowing that I don't have new acne today.

The starter kit is supposed to last four weeks. I will keep this blog updated from day to day with updates about my skin. I hope this works.
