My Accutane journey so far has been a positive one due to the great products I've been using. Except for my poor dried out little eyes, no drop I could find would work… When you first get on Accutane, get yourself in a routine – wash & moisturize your face and lotion up every morning & evening. I seriously didn’t suffer the dry flakey-ness like most people on Accutane. I watched all You-Tube videos and the common thing was they wished they started moisturizing before the dryness came. DO IT!! I started out just using what my dermatologist recommended which was Cetaphil but not long after the dryness creeped in, that I knew I had to find a better product that didn't leave my face with that tight dry feeling. YouTube to save the day! Absolutely recommend without any hesitation: First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser & Ultra Repair Face Moisturizer – Seriously a little bit goes a long way. Super moisturizing! Calms redness and irritation, no harsh chemicals or colorants. Safe for sensitive skin. In the 6 months I have been on Accutane, I’m on my 2nd tube of the face wash and still on first bottle of the moisturizer. A little spendy at $20.00 for 5 oz. for the face wash and $24.00 for the moisturizer but has saved my life while on Accutane. I do not think I wouldn’t be able to wear powder foundation without it. I don’t remember my face getting dry & flaky like others say they got since I started using it. The face wash lathers up really nice so just a little bit is all you need, literally just a pea sized amount. I go through more because I wash my twice at night to get all the make-up off. Although now I could use facial wipes since I don’t HAVE ANY BREAKOUTS!! Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask This lip stuff absolutely without a doubt saved my life! This lip mask is super thick and stays on for hours. Of course I started out on Aquaphor Lip Repair but I kept having to put it on like every 15 minutes. I did try regular ol’ Chap Stick and Carmex, was like putting water on! Instantly had to reapply. A co-worker of mine said she just used Chap Stick and had to brush her lips with her toothbrush cause her lips peeled all the time! Ugh! No way! I spent $26 for the Aqave Lip Mask at Sephora and 6 months later still using the same tube, there’s about 1/3 of the tube left! Super awesome stuff! Go get some now! Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash - Aveeno Skin Relief Overnight Cream & Aveeno Skin Relief Moisture Repair Cream I went the fragrance free/soap free route and these are wonderful! I last about 2 days in the dryness before I went out & bought new lotion. I did try First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream (Sephora = free samples) and it was pretty awesome but spendy. Since I went out splurged on face wash & lip stuff – I just used what I could find at Walmart. Aveeno Overnight Cream is super intense lotion and will stay on after washing your hands, which for me being a slight germ-a-phobe is a god-send. i bought both lotions and they both work great! One at work - one at home! Vaseline Every evening before I go to bed I have to put some in my nose or my night will suck.
Went to the Dermatologist 17 days ago but I was waiting to see how my face would be after receiving several steroid shots in my face! WTF! Those pesky ones on my left cheek just wouldn’t go away and the Derm suggested steroid shots to help them heal. I got 3 or 4 injections…and a couple of them did sting. Took almost a full week and those pesky ones finally went away! I feel a lot better and look a lot better! Also wanted to wait to post to see what would happen when that time of the month came around…1 little bitty pimple came and went in 2 days. Got 1 on my chin which seemed like what I’ve gotten my whole life – big, ugly, painful SOB – but it came to a head & then went away! Still have a dry patch where it was, that I can handle! Side effects: · I now have that joint pain/back pain, feels like I moved a friend to a new apartment and did all the heavy lifting. Derm told me I can take just 1 pill a day (40 mg) if it gets bad. I was trying to tough it out but this week I’ve only taken 1 pill & its better but still there. · Lips aren’t bad but I think it’s due to products more than anything. · Tried to get a rash on my arm but drank some more water & it went away. Dermatologist said she wants 2 months of no lingering breakouts like I had, so I’m thinking I’ll have another month of Accutane but I am finally going in next week for my acne surgery – had to reschedule, then it became an insurance timing thing…dumb. The pimple/blackhead thing is gone – FINALLY but I still see some blackheads but my skin really is improving by leaps and bounds. Derm said most people see this kind of clearing in month 4, I just had some stubborn ones. Next appointment is in 19 days & I hope to hear 1 more month… but will happen to my face when I stop taking Accutane…back to super oily...hopefully somewhere in between...
Finshed my 4th month of Accutane! Time really has flown - I remember reading that & hearing that on YouTube videos and thinking "Yeah, right! Your in throes of Accutane desert dryness!" but it really has flown by!
Day 107-118: I have a few spots that aren't completely flat but no big ones! That time of the month came & went with only 2 new pimples coming in & they were just little - came & went within a couple of days. To not break out dramatically at my time of month is completely unheard of! My face looks so different! I even went to Sephora to check out BB creams as i just have a some hyperpigmentation/redness - i feel like the BB cream would cover that. I dont think i need to "spackle" like i have my whole life. Sephora employees are super awesome, the girl gave me samples of the 2 BB creams i was interested in as she said the consistency was very different & boy was she right! I really liked the Torte over the BareMinerals & i am a BareMinerals girl all the way!
I did develop a rash/eczema on the back of my hands but that was my fault, I didnt drink enough water 1 day & BAM! RASH! Took about a week for it to go away after diligently drinking minimum 150 oz of water & putting super awesome lotion (Aveeno Overnight cream) several times a day.
Yesterday i noticed a new pimple on my chin area & a raised one on that cluster of 7-8 on my left cheek. Its like the cluster doesnt want to DIE!!!!!!!!
Still have some joint pain & tiredness but not enough to keep me from walking everyday.
Day 119-127: Saw the dermatolgist the other day & a pretty routine visit as previous appointments but this one was with the doctor instead of the CNP. Dr was pleased with my results so far and won't be increasing my dosage anymore, I will stay on 80mg for a few more months. I kinda figured I would have to extend it another month for a total of 7 months, dr wants 2 months of no breakouts. For the most part my face has cleared up I have literally 1 some what active pimple on my jaw line. 1! Only 1! I dont remember the last time my face was this clear....
I did ask about the pimple/blackhead/thing on my nose and the doc recommened acne surgery since i have some other blackheads on my face. She said lets just get rid of them all in one swoop as there is some congestion on my jaw line. I've never really had blackheads just the cystic acne or maybe i have & just couldn't see them hahaaa. So I'm ok with the acne surgery and have it scheduled for next week.
Doc also told me i could take both my Accutane pills together in the morning, she said they recommend splitting them up
Side-effects have leveled off and I am thankful! Lips still dry but not the super intense like it has been the last 3 weeks or so. Joint pain/tiredness going away but i dont know if thats from the meds or me working a lot of overtime and doing a lot of yardwork... No rashes. Eyes still dry but again not the super intense as it was the last 3 weeks or so.
I did venture out with no foundation on, just eye make up and it was so uplifting to do so! I still have the hyper-pigmentation but nothing a little BB cream & some BareMinerals Mineral Veil doesn't cover/soften & even out.
Im way excited to see how this month and next month goes!
Day 98-106: I feel so much better! Still dry but my face is clearing up! I havent had a new pimple come in, the ones i had from the previous month are fading away. The cluster of 7-8 on my left cheek are almost all flat! 1 of them just started oozing one evening, just watching TV & i felt it! UGH! Of course all kinds of stuff came out...forever.... i really hope i dont have to deal with that ever again! I still have the one on my nose but its not really a pimple or a blackhead...not sure what it is but will ask the derm when i go back in a few weeks. I will see the actually dermatologist not just the CNP as she will be out for the holiday (4th of July).
I have noticed these little bumps on my face the last couple of months, not a pimple more like a blackhead but not... as the Accutane dosage has increased, i notice these things just fall off my face, they dont hurt. Thinking they are a white/black head morph that is getting pushed out of my pores....so very weird! Another thing i'll ask about at next appointment.
I survived the heat wave we had but just barely! Accutane thinning your skin is no joke! Had a birthday BBQ to go to and its was 102 degrees!! YUCK! I religiously put on my 100 SPF sunblock & did just short bursts outside - told people at the party i was on meds that made me sensitive to the sun (didnt know all the peeps there & really didnt feel like i had to tell my whole story) - i felt everytime i popped outside my skin burning! I tan easily but Accutane makes me tan very very very easily. I probably be safe from a sunburn with SPF100 but i think i'd get super dark, super fast.
Nose is dry but Vaseline is saving my life - lips feel wind burnt all the time without my Bite Agave Lip Mask on - i know the dryness is intense when my other super awesome lip stuff doenst work
Did notice some knee pain, i have a wack knee but now its both knees and i really notice it when i'm going up stairs - i think its the meds not my wack knee. Some IBP & i'm ok. First time getting the joint pain so far on this journey & in the 4th month - i can live with it.
No mood changes or anything.
But my self confidence is so much better this month than compared to last month as the last of my acne is fading away - i can deal with the fading red spots with some makeup. Not having the cystic hurtful acne that would actually change the structure of face makes me almost cry....
Day 63-97: Wow! 3 months on Accutane already!! I will say that month 3 was the worst for me. Not because of the dryness but because I got several breakouts/cystic acne that just lingered the whole month. They didn't go away until I got another bump in meds with my visit last week to the Derm.
Got bumped to 80 mg per day every day & BAM! back to being super intensely dry again. BUT the cluster of cystic acne i got my cheek are now fading away. It was a cluster of 7-8 big ugly ones that again didn't come & go like they have when I first started Accutane. 2 big ones on either side of my eyebrow (really? both side?! Really. sigh) 1 big hummer on my neck. Literally within 2 days of doing 80 mg per day every day, they went down & today (Day 6 of 80 mg every day) they are almost flat. The ones on either side of my eyebrow are gone just little red spots but no pimples. So l will take that dryness to get rid of these last cystic acne!! I have not gotten any white heads or little ones....weird. I noticed my skin tone starting to even out.... never seen it like this....weird LOL
Lab work came back all good, liver still holding in there! Yay Liver! (fist bump) Cholesterol levels a wee bit high but nothing to be concerned with, Derm said to watch what I eat - low glycemic index.
The biggest dryness I notice is my eyes! Feels like they will just fall out of my skull & if they did I would be so happy cause i could dunk them in water/eye drop/contact solution & get relief. No eye drop brand makes a difference, I just grit my teeth & take it....and try to blink... So thirsty too... feel like SpongeBob when he visits Sandy for the first time...
One big thing that totally took me by surprise - i got a sunburn & peeled! It was only 54 degrees the day i got. My chest literally peeled! I tan super easy & have only peeled twice in my LIFE! So now I'm all about the sunscreen at all times. Recently it has super hot (near 90 degrees) and i slather on the 100 SPF & i still feel like I might burn. I do short bursts outside.... such an odd experience for me. For people who burn easy i couldn't imagine but maybe its just me.
Still very happy with the results and happy with my decision to go on Accutane.
Day 34: The inside of my nose is so much drier! It hasn't bled but its close... more annoying than anything. Nasal spray & Vaseline = life savers.
I noticed 2 little pimples last night - one on my forehead & one on my chin. Just little dudes so not even stressin' about them!
My jaw line is for sure better! The cystic acne is a lot flatter, a little bumpy but nothing like before. My neck just has the red spots from the acne, looks awful but nothing there!
My face is little more dry but again nothing that isn't manageable with some good product.
Hair is fabulous! Not washing it everyday is FANTASTIC! Normal people don't know how easy they have it!!!!!!!!!
Day 35-36: Loving my hair! Day 3 of not washing my hair - talk about some big hair! Like they say: bigger the hair-closer to god I had some people at work check my hair & they had no idea that i hadn't washed my hair for 3 days!
Day 37: Washed my hair, i probably could have gone another day but i felt the need to wash it...maybe that will pass in time...
My face is a lot better, only 1 faint bump on my jaw line - 1! I cant remember the last time i didn't have something going on there! The other 2 i got this week, the one on my chin is just fading away - the one on my forehead - still there, just chillin' - not any bigger or smaller wtf? lol. I did do an experiment last night, not putting anything on my lips after my awesome product wore off after dinner. Holy! Cow! I could feel my lips slowing just drying out - i can totally see what using only chapstick would be like. Awful! Painful! I had a moment that my lips were so dry they almost cracked. Ugh! Slattered on my Agave Lip Mask/Aquphor combo and was immediately better. I tend to use Aquaphor at night. (Cant handle that tacky/super thickness at work...i look weird too...) No dry lips when i get up in the morning.
Day 38-42: I started to notice i wasn't as thirsty as before & my nose wasn't as dry but i was still thirsty & was still dry... thought maybe it was due to some cooler weather that came in.. i would go back to being drrrrrrry once the weather went back to normal. My face didn't feel as dry, i felt like i didn't need moisturizer anymore... what the heck is going on? Maybe Accutane isn't going to work for me anymore? Should i change the time of day i take it?? Is my acne just going to come back cause i'm pretty clear now???
Instead of searching the internet for answers i called my doctor who said that the less dryness is my body's way of adjusting to the meds, which means they will up my dose the next time. Perfectly normal. She said its riding the roller-coaster of dryness of Accutane. Which made total sense! I wondered why some people on YouTube got a bump in dosage & others didn't. I am not back to my normal oil slick skin but i'm flaky dry either - its hard to explain - my makeup still lasts all day, still have great oil free hair (as i type this i'm on day 4!! DAY 4 OF NOT WASHING MY HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I almost have a dewy skin look, which looks great! Not the one glance & you think Dang! that girl needs to put some lotion on her face! I could totally be content with life if i had skin like this after accutane. Do you hear the angels singing???
Had a couple of breakouts, that came & went. I do have a big one that popped out yesterday on my jawline/neck- the kind that hurt but its just the one. Oh! That one on forehead kinda went funky - started out as a little guy for a couple of days. Then BAM! turned in a big guy that hurt for a couple of days, then went to that big, ugly whitehead stage for a couple of days. I was good & just left him alone... it was tough! Now hes (they are always he's LOL) going down & looks all dry around the edges. Just leaving him alone.
My lips still uncomfortable with out something on but i go longer between putting product on. I
I go back to the Derm in 18 days!
Day 43-59: Still dry but not as intense. This time when it came to my time of the month, i broke out worse than the previous month. I assume that is because my body was more use to the Accutane than before. I plan on asking the dr when i go in today. Maybe 6-7 breakouts most were just little dudes who went away fast but got 2 big dudes. One on my chin & one towards the end of my eyebrow - the big ones that just hurt but they are starting to go down.
Still got the one on my jaw line that just barely starting to go down..slowly. Rest of face is doing pretty good, made the switch to a liquid foundation & i forgot what the coverage can be! I notice peeps really looking at me, like really looking at me now LOL! Probably trying to figure out how to ask me about my face heehee.
Pretty sure i'll get the bump in dosage today, alternating 40mg one day then 80mg the next.
Still glad i did Accutane - it ain't nothing i can't handle
Day 60-62: Got the bump in meds like i thought! So starting Sunday (i start everything new on sundays) i take 40mg once day for 2 days, so Tuesday i will take 80 mg that day (once in the morning & once at night), continue that way for the first week. THEN i go to 40mg one day, 80 the next & keep alternating. Labs came back good - WAY TO GO LIVER! This is going to be interesting to see how it goes.
I will say now, im Accutane normal, not normal normal like pre-Accutane but not intensely dry. Which is why i think i got the bump in meds.
I have noticed the rash on the back of my hands is back... I think its due to not drinking enough water, I didn't drink nearly as much water i normally do over the weekend. I am testing my theory as we speak....
As far as my face goes still got the 3 big ones but they are shrinking, nothing new has come in either. Derm did say will see clearing this month or that most people do. Still have some bumpiness but really not that noticeable.
Below is day to day log for the whole first month of Accutane.
Started 03/02/16 - 40mg - Once a day
Did not see any side-effects till day 6 - lips felt dry/burning & i got super thirsty. not sure if its the start of my inital breakout but i got 5 or 6 white heads & some cystic acne on my neck and they hurt.~joy~
Day7 - woke up lips were fine but did cake on the Carmex at bedtime. about 10 am lips felt a little dry / little burning. back hurts a little bit. took some ibp. still thristy. still got breakouts.
Day8 - Noticeable more dryness (yay!) not as many whiteheads but still have some. the cystic acne on my lower jaw/neck area doesn't seem to hurt as bad today. hope this is the first & only wave of initial breakout but i fear it isn't. lips felt a little tingly this morning. got some Aquaphor will probably use it at night. makeup lasted almost all day - 1-2 pm! I've never had that happen. Nose is super dry - got Vaseline & nasal spray at work. still thirsty!
DAY9 - FELT SOME DRYNESS WHEN I FIRST WOKE UP~ LIPS WERE OK FROM ALL THE AQUAPHOR I PUT ON THEM WHEN I WENT TO BED. AROUND 8AM MY FACE STARTED TO FEEL TIGHT - DRY TIGHT. My eyes are super dry. Chugged 34 oz of water before i even left for work. I am going to have to moisturize tonight. I did start using the Cetaphil for face wash this morning! so glad i did! went to Ulta after work (forgot how wonderful that store is) got some rosebud salve lip balm - absolutely love it! & a more moisturizing shampoo. $9! is all i spent! Did order some first aid beauty online..next day shipping. dry! but so much better than oil. a sacrifice i will endure to get rid of this acne.
Day10-19- No real change. Same ol same ol. I am starting to notice a gradual dryness coming on. But still oily - just not as oily. Still got the shine! Still purging (ugh!) but it is mostly focused on my neck, jaw line; basically from upper lip down. I've had 2 pimples break that barrier, one on my NOSE, like for the whole world to see, whitehead to boot! & one almost between my eyebrows! Seriously!! lol. The one thing i'm starting to notice is they come & go way way quicker than before. The one by my eyebrow was big ugly cystic acne; popped up Friday 3/18 by Monday 3/21 its already going away! My jaw line tho is another story...thats where its the worst & its the cystic acne. Big, ugly, painful. Those seem to be hanging around, haven't really gone down or flattened out. I do have a cluster right side, chin area. Several whiteheads that are drying out, getting flaky. Have to put some moisturizer on it & then it looks better. But definitely not putting moisturizer on my whole face...i just cant... still oily...goes against everything I've ever done for 20+ years...
Been watching YouTube videos, some people had acne way worse than me & it just breaks my heart!
Day20 - Can it be??! I'm not oily and i'm not super dry.... is this what "normal skin" is like? If it is, its heaven!!!!!!!!!! I've been wondering when this day would come! No new acne so thats pretty awesome. Still got the big ones on my jawline and the one by my eyebrows is just fading away. Starting to see some flakiness around the muzzle (heard some one reference that on a YouTube video & loved it) area, not bad, probably not real noticeable to anyone but me. Back of my hands feel a little sand-papery, a few flaky spots. Also my hair isn't as oily, its....fluffy. Hard to describe, products i have been using seem to work better, Probably cause the oil isn't there to weigh it all down. Have started using a leave in conditioner...so foreign to me! lol So today i didn't use as much hair product (shocking for anyone who knows me!) to see what it looks like tmrrw. I did put on some mineral eyeshadow to see how long it will take before it creases from my oily skin....
But so far its been 4+ hours since i did my makeup & i see a smidgen of shine, nothing really bad. I'm super excited but i know i will cross over to the desert land soon enough. Getting ready for that, been moisturizing at night before bed, got a humidifier going in the bedroom. Keep applying lip stuff. Lips are definitely leaning towards the drier side, still got that wind burnt/burning feel to them. Hard not to be excited for the less oily side, keep thinking BAM! i'm going back to super super oily.... To me, maintaining dry skin would be easier than oily. When you can wipe the back of your hand across your forehead and it comes away glistening....ugh. I will definitely update tomorrow the makeup status!
DAY 21- Drier & drier i become! Noticed the first signs of flakiness on my nose last night after washing my face. My makeup lasted all day - a little oily at the end of the day but nothing a little blot would have gotten rid of. This morning, my hair was slightly oily not real bad but bad enough to need to wash my hair. I noticed some little bumps on the back of hands and on my lower legs, not itchy just bumpy.... My eyes are still dry - no way can i wear my contacts. which is OK will save $$$ in the long run. I do so much computer work, its better to wear my glasses. MY LIPS AREN'T CHAPPED OR PEELING - THEY ARE DRY, VERY DRY, UNCOMFORTABLE WITHOUT SOMETHING ON THEM.
DAY22 - I GOT FLAKINESS! Mostly chin area but its there! Doing my best not to pick off the flakes...kinda hard. The unicorn pimple i had, it got to the point of being all scabby & the scab just fell off while washing my face. Even tho i was super gentle it just fell off. it looks a lot better, definitely faster healing time. I do have a couple more cystic ones on my jaw line - little guys. still got the 2 big guys on my jaw line and the big guy on my neck... Switched to a creamer foundation & it looks a lot better. may have to shelf the mineral powder. Lips more dry today & my hands but the cold/snow may be to blame.
DAY23 - Skin about the same from yesterday, if not a little better & a little worse. Better cause i went & bought the First Aid Beauty Face Wash & its AMAZING!!!!!! Perfect amount of moisturizing & effectiveness of getting the makeup off. I did wash with Cetaphil first to get most of the makeup off just cause i have it & i'm leery about using face wipes..maybe once my skin clears up more. Also bought the Bite Agave Lip Mask i heard so much about on YouTube, $26 but totally worth it. Put it on before bed & this morning, lips felt amazing!!!!!! Brought it to work to see how it will do during the day, i put some of the Rosebud Salve on top...we'll see. On both products, a little goes a long way so to me very much worth the $50! Skin worse cause i have a few breakouts but i think its from the creamy foundation i used, so i did the BareMinerals today, i do use a lot less makeup Still putting lotion at bedtime, so i'm doing pretty good... cant wait for dr. appt. & they up my dosage... maybe lol
DAY24: Pretty much the same, nothing new EXCEPT the unicorn is gone. Still have a scab & its all dry around it but the cyst is gone. Took a week. The big guys on my jaw line seem smaller but it could just be wishful thinking. The big one on my neck is still there, big as ever! I must say the Aguava Lip Mask & FAB Face Wash are making my life easier! Glad i found them now instead of being miserable. My face is so soft now especially my forehead - no pimples there! very little oil accumulates during the day or night. I had a few small pimples/blackheads show up on right cheek, face seems kinda bumpy there. With all of this being said, its not horrible, i'm not embarrassed about going out in public. It was obvious pre-accutane i had acne, I'm not fooling anyone, i know my acne would be so much worse if i didn't go on accutane. Whats coming thru is what would have happened sooner or later. The concoction of the Bite Agave Lip Mask and Rosebud Salve lasted almost all day - i even brushed my teeth in that time frame!
Day25&26: I am just loving the dryness!! I ventured to not wash my hair Sunday morning & it looked just fine all day, even into the evening! I did get new shampoo - just the Suave brand with Moroccan oil & its wonderful! I may totally embrace this new dry hair & cut my hair. So much more bounce & life! Doesn't get oily to weigh it down. Also got Aveeno body wash - fragrance free. I think i'm going to go that route, so hopefully i wont get the burn others have mentioned on YouTube. I started noticing i was getting itchy...
Day27: Still dry but not overly so - Experimenting with my FAB moisturizer. Didn't put any on today & still used my BareMinerals...got some flakiness going on...may have to start putting it on all over instead of just under my eyes.... we shall see! This thirst i have, is just crazy! Its super great for my skin & body but its always there! I have noticed the more water i drink the less my lips/skin are dry. I am averaging about 150 oz of water - a little shy of a gallon & half! Update to skin - definitely need to put on moisturizer - 4 1/2 hours into my day & I got some flakiness going on.
Day28: Definitely need moisturizer in the AM now, makeup looks way better today. Still using BareMinerals power foundation. I am absolutely loving drier skin! Makeup stays all day. No touch-ups. Makeup has become fun for me again instead of a necessity. Rest of my body is fine since switching to the Aveeno Body Wash & Aveeno 24 hour lotion. I put it on in the morning and before i go to bed. Lips still dry but not peeling or cracked, all thanks to the lip mask (BEST STUFF EVER!!!!).
The big guys on my jaw line & neck are definitely going down! Yay!
I do go to dermatologist Friday (it's Tuesday) and assuming all blood-work comes back normal, she will probably bump my dose to the alternating 40mg one 80 the next....what will my side effects be then? Kinda nervous cause they haven't been bad at all... I plan on asking if another IB (Initial Breakout) will happen when the up my dose. Should I take any supplements or vitamins? Maybe Omega 3 Fish Oil - Vitamin D..
Day29-33: Everything stayed the same while i was on a mini-vacation as far as side-effects go.
Dermatologist appointment went really fast! Labs were done the previous day, so when i went in, had to take a pregnancy test (negative) then i met with the CNP (Certified Nurse Practitioner), the lab ppl drew the wrong labs, didn't include the white blood cell count. So Saturday i had to go back in to get labs done again, i have to fast - thankful they are open first thing Saturday morning!
CNP kept my dosage at the same (40mg - 1 pill per day) for month 2. I am totally OK with that! Leery about the side-effects of doubling my dose.... She did say I will probably see total clearing at month 3. She did fill my prescription for another month.
My face is definitely getting better, my mom came to town & immediately commented on my face. I only have 2 big ones left on my jawline, the others are almost flat. Yay! The only issue i had on my mini-vacation was I had an Orthodontist appointment (yes i have braces....acne...ugh! lol) and when the gal tightened my wire, the tool they used rubbed on the corner of my mouth like normal, this time I got like a rug burn. It didn't cut me or make me bleed but rubbed it raw. I didn't think my skin was sensitive yet... guessed wrong! Put some Aquaphor on it over the week now its flaky! Can't win! LOL!
Got my hair cut as i noticed the ends of my hair were super dry, back to being short...wonder what would happen if I colored my hair.... I'll have to research that....
As I was home for 5 days, I did notice I wasn't as dry at home cause of the humidifier I had going in the living room. There is also one in our bedroom. Totally made a difference.
First month wasn't bad at all - totally manageable - totally worth it!
I had acne in junior high/high school but nothing severe, i would get a pimple here or there and it was usually my fault; not washing my face, touching my face with dirty hands, etc. etc. But its when I got put on birth control shot Depo when i was in my late teens/early 20's that's when the cystic acne happened. It was awful. I got those big, ugly, painful ones that would practically ooze if I yawned. I'm embarrassed & ashamed just thinking about it...
Queue the doctor (regular doctor), got antibiotics, changed soap and any OTC "remedy" i could get my hands on. It took awhile but the acne settled down & I didn't have that deformed face (couldn't see my jaw line or cheekbones) anymore but I had cystic acne that just lingered. I have a few along my jaw line that NEVER went away, they are just there. I held it at bay but there were times it came back with a vengeance. Whiteheads, more cystic acne that would take weeks to go down or flatten. Just awful.... This went on for years. Quite literally tried everything from ProActive to the most potent OTC topicals i could find. Tried different birth control to no birth control. Nothing worked. Even tried tretinoin & was told if this doesn't cure your acne, nothing would.... didn't work after 5 months.
My skin is super, super, super, super oily. To the point after applying my foundation, it would literally slide off my face within a couple of hours. Constantly blotting & redoing my makeup. No way in heck could i wear liquid foundation, had to use power foundation. To get the coverage i needed...even with BareMinerals...i was so shiny by 8am, 2 hours after i put it on. I like to do makeup, i enjoy experimenting but nothing would stop the shine. Primers didn't work. Tried mineral eye shadow by noon it was creased & looked horrid. SIGH.
Finally got tired of spending money & wasting time trying to do tackle my acne on my own, it was time to go to the dermatologist, a real dermatologist. Queue the dermatologist.
Wonderful doctor with the most amazing skin i've ever seen on someone 40+! She asked questions on my history with acne, blahblahblah. I wasnt expecting her to recommend Accutane but i really wasnt sure what she would recommend. Totally reassured me, they (doctors) know so much more about side effects, the mood swings, so i felt at ease about it. She told me the dosage would be low & slow which studies have found to have a more lasting effect and the sideeffects arent BAM! AWFUL! So I had to take the pregnancy test that day and given slip to go get blood drawn, they dont go it there and was told to do the whole 30 day wait. She did give me some antibiotics to help clear up the acne i had, she said to help with purging...i had no idea what she was talking about hahaaa. Started the paperwork of the ipledge program.. wowza! Also she wanted me to come back & do a mircodermabrasion treatment & extract the acne i had. OMG! the extracting was awful & wonderful. They "popped" all my acne, those big ones i had forever, hurt! The astethician said she popped over 40, i about cried. I didnt realize how bad my acne was. So of course my face looked HORRID afterwards. But i trusted the doctor and within a week or 2 my face really cleared up...then BAM! cystic acne came back. By this time i was chomping at the bit to start accutane. Longest 30 days of my life!
Finally the day of my appointment! Go in, do pregnancy test (negative). Do more of the ipledge stuff. Get my prescription for accutane called into pharmacy. Told not to use anything for acne treatment just Cetaphil & a moisturizer. Had to go online fill out more iplege stuff - pharmacy needed my ipledge card before they could fill prescription. Sheesh!
I will say i watched about every YouTube video out there, the good, the bad, the horrific & terrifying just to get an idea of what was in store for me. There weren't any that were for someone over 30, hence i decided to document my journey. Also what products worked for me & what didn't and hopefully some tips.
