My skin is getting clearer! I'm on 80mg a day (40mg twice daily), though I frequently forget to take the 2nd pill. My biggest concern is the dryness. My skin is very dry, but I've been slathering on various Clinique moisturizers every morning and evening. It's seems to be doing a good job so far. Carmex and Aquaphor are lifesavers for my lips. I've got anywhere from 4-8 tubes floating around at any given time. I've also purchased some Eucerine Original Healing Lotion, which seem to keep some of the dryness at bay on my hands, feet, and body. I did have to go back to the dermatologist because I was getting these small splotchy rash looking marks on my hands. The dermatologist said it was dermatitis and to stop using scented body washed (I now use a Dove bar). He also prescribed me an ointment to help.
I'm very happy that I've made the decision to go on Accutane. I wish I would have done it sooner and not waited until I was in my 30s! I'm about to start my 3rd month and I'm looking forward to seeing more results. I've posted before and after picture below of myself after washing my face. No make up or phone filters! Me in the gray shirt was day 1 of Accutane. Me in the purple shirt was like 2 days ago. I can totally see a difference!
General Update: I have been on isotretinoin for 23 days now and I am definitely seeing improvement. Though my acne is not gone, my breakouts are significantly less severe. The pimples I get are less in numbers, less in size, and seem to go away quicker. My husband has noticed this too.
Side Effects: I am definitely experiencing the dry lips and skin. My lips have not flaked or cracked yet but they are dry and get that burning sensation when I don't put anything on them for a while. I basically make sure I have lip balm with me at ALL times! As for my usually very oily skin...it's dry. The creases around my nose tend to flake and I no longer have an oily feel to the skin on my face. I'm still trying to find the right facial moisturizer. My Clinique stuff is not doing the job! I need to find something that will work...and soon! Totally open to suggestions. I've also notice a few tiny dry patches of skin on my hands that are red in color. They seem to get better when I apply hand lotion. I may need to start using lotion all over my body. So far, I have had zero issues with my hair and scalp. No joint pains as of yet. I was a little lethargic the first week on accutane, but I'm not 100% sure if the accutane was to blame.
Makeup: Since my skin is dry now that I'm on accutane, I've found that I can't use my normal foundation (Clinique) anymore. I've switched to a tinted moisturizer (Clinique) that has less coverage than my normal foundation, but it cover enough since my acne is less sever. The tinted moisturizer feels so much better on my skin than the foundtion. I then continue to use my normal pressed powder (Physician's Formula) to set it. Though the coverage is amazing, I have a feeling that I am going to need to cut out the pressed powder soon if my face gets any dryer.
On 2/17/2016, I was finally able to start taking accutane (tons of hoops to jump through if your a chick). I'm 31 years old and currently on 40 mg once a day. The attached pictures are my day one pictures. (I look rough...I know!) Typically my face is so oily that you could fry a piece of chicken on it, but in the pictures below, my face is freshly washed, exfoliated, and moisturized. My face is currently in one of its break out cycles and you can see my scar marks.
I use gentle face wash/bars and I'm hoping that I won't have to switch what I'm using while on accutane. I also use the gel version of classic yellow Clinique moisturizer in the am and pm after washing my face. However, I have a feeling this stuff may not moisturize my face enough once the accutane starts to kick in. I also purchased some lip healing ointment because the dermatologist practically guaranteed that I would get severely dry lips on accutane.
I'm really hoping that this stuff works and that the side effects are mild. I do have some serious concerns about my face becoming too dry and really flaky. I work in a professional office and would hate to come into work looking like a dried out pie crust.
I'm hoping that I stick with logging my progress while on accutane and I welcome suggestions and comments from others who are on or have been on accutane. Wish me luck!
