ProFractional for acne scars SUCKS! Never Again :(

Ugh... ProFractional really screwed up my skin. It's been 7 months since I had it done and I wish I could go back and warn myself to never mess with it. My skin is more sensitive, gets red and blotchy very easily, cannot handle Retin A micro anymore - none of these were issues in the past. My scars are also more obvious. I can't believe I paid to do this to my skin  Anyways, be careful if you are considering this. The reviews seem extremely mixed. I am not the only one that has ended up with

Diet and Acne - Finding the Common Links

I am learning more and more about just how closely acne and diet are related. I've read a lot of books regarding nutrition and how it plays a role in either creating acne or encouraging clear skin. I never used to believe that eliminating certain foods could actually benefit skin health. I've seen it all first hand now though and I believe it more and more. Over Christmas and Thanksgiving, I indulged too much. I'm sure I'm not alone in that! It's such a hard time of year to stay on track but n

ProFractional treatment for acne scars

I'm still healing from the profractional treatment I had a couple of months ago. i still have faint areas of 'track marks' on my face from the laser. I'm actually starting to worry that they might never go away  I try not to think about it too much but it definitely bothers me. At this point I wonder if I made the right decision by choosing to go through with it.  I'm still working on my diet. My skin is holding up pretty well but, as always, the diet takes it toll. Pores are more clogged, I l

Retin A Micro, ProFractional, Scarring

It's been 6 weeks since I had an aggressive profractional treatment on my cheeks to try and treat my acne scars. I re-started my Retin A Micro regimen this past week. All signs of redness are gone but I still have some fain track marks from the procedure. I am having a hard time telling if there is any improvement. Sometimes I wonder if it actually made my scars worse (see the videos below for before and after pictures) My diet has been up and down. I did wonderful for almost a month and my

ProFractional Laser for Acne Scars

It's been about a week and a half since my ProFractional Laser Treatment specifically targeting my acne scars. My doc went quite deep so the treatment was pretty aggressive (way more aggressive than I was expecting!) I wish I had done more research on profractional before just going ahead with it. I didn't realize how much of a hassle the recovery would be. I looked pretty awful for at least 5 days and was constantly covered in greasy moisturizers and my skin was tight, a bit flaky, and a touc

Broad Band Light Treatment & Pro Fractional

Just a quick update that I'll be getting Broad Band Light treatment tomorrow (I think it's an updated type of intense pulse light treatment). It's supposed to help with sun damage, pigmentation issues, and overall skin health. It supposedly can help decrease your change of developing skin cancer in the future too which sounds like a nice bonus to me. I spent basically my entire youth frying in the sun and then my skin got scars from all my cystic acne so my skin has been through a lot. I figure

Crappy diet... crappy skin

My diet has been all over the place and it shows on my skin. It's probably the worst my skin has been in a while. My poor body is sick of all the back and forth with diet. When I am eating clean it shows up on my skin in the best way possible. Too much sugar and grains and crappy oils and it goes downhill pretty fast. I really need to get a grip on being more consistent rather than all or nothing.  I'm hoping to adopt a less restrictive approach to paleo based eating so that I can keep up wit

MORE sickness??? Diet and Retin A Micro Updates

So I am sick AGAIN. I have a cold which is usually not a big deal but this has been bad. It's going on a week now and it's only gotten worse... no energy, sore throat, fever / chills... ugh. I am ready to be healthy again. As far as my skin, it took a turn for the worst. I started taking probitoics (Dr Ohhria's Probiotics Professional Formula, paid $80 for them!!!) in early March and I think those are the cause. I got them after my last sickness thinking it would help to balance out my stomac

Retin a Micro, Sickness, & Diet Updates

I was following the paleo diet (no grains, sugar, dairy, or beans and focusing on fruits, veggies, nuts, fish, lean meat, etc.) and it was not only helping my body but also my skin. It looked a lot firmer, healthier, and had more life to it. And no breakouts in sight. A month into my diet, I got sick... very sick. I won't go into the nitty gritty details but I ended up in the hospital needed fluids due to dehydration and also just double checking that it wasn't anything serious. I have never bee

More Updates on Retin A Micro & Nutrition

It's been a little over 2 months now of Retin A and I'm really happy with how it's going now. My skin adjusted nicely and I'm looking forward to seeing it improve even more with continued use. I cover a lot more details in the video below if you are interested. Also, my diet has been very beneficial for my skin. Between my clean eating and using Retin A, my skin is in wonderful shape right now.  Retin A Micro .1% - 8 Week Update:  My Acne Story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz8

Retin A Micro & Diet Updates

It seems like my face is peeling a little bit less. I think it's been around 4 or 5 weeks since I started using Retin A Micro. I am using it 2x per week now (on the in between days I use nice moisturizers or tamanu oil).  Just the other day, I noticed that the tone of my skin seems to be improving. It's hard to describe but it seems to be getting more even and maybe a touch of a glow to it. I'll take it! I am still getting random bumps here and there but nothing out of the ordinary. I don'

Retin A Micro Update

Quick Retin a micro update...  Still using Retin a micro but as of last week I started using it two times a week as opposed to one. I am still experiencing the same side effects as before - flakiness... which seems to show up about two days after I apply it and last for about two days. I haven't noticed anything else such as redness or sensitive skin. On the nights I do not use retin a, I am using very healing moisturizers, tamanu oil, or my paulas choice intensive weekly peel (I have been usi

Starting Retin A Micro .1%

I got a prescription for Retin a micro .1% and started it last week... I used it Tuesday night and then also this past Tuesday for a total of two times so far. I'll continue using it once a week during this adjustment period. I have used it in the past but had to go off for three years (I had two kids and was breastfeeding during that time so obviously retin a is a no no). I'm excited to be back on it because when I went on it the first time it really helped my skin. I had already gotten ri

Diet MATTERS!!!

I have gained 10 lbs in the last month from sitting around too much, eating too much, and not taking care of myself - and it shows on my skin. I do not break out in horrible, painful cystic acne like I used to when I was really struggling, but I still have temperamental skin. I have to watch what I put on it and I can definitely see a change based on what I eat as well.    The last month has been nothing but sugar, dairy, and carbs - bad idea! My skin is dull, tired looking, lots of cl

Desperate times call for crazy measures

I enjoyed making my "every acne treatment video" but it was painful to see the ways I harmed my skin by believing anyone on the internet saying "this is a miracle cure" when really it was just an awful idea. This was the one treatment I didn't include in that video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlhsBCe0Zzs   I figured this one deserved it's own video because of how silly it was! Who knows, maybe this really has worked for some people but it did nothing for me but embarrass me! Also, check th

Acne Treatments - The Good, The Bad & The Stupid

I FINALLY finished my video covering every acne treatment I ever attempted. It's basically a huge compilation of reviews.                   My Acne Story - The Good, The Bad & The Stupid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukQ1w8uo5Nw I just hope my story can help someone to understand that eventually you WILL find what works for you. I got to a point where I didn't believe I would. People that had overcome acne were like unicorns to me. If anything, hopefully my attempts will make you laugh

Learning the hard way

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh what a journey it has been! Posting 'my acne story' on youtube really got me thinking about everything I tried to get rid of acne - and I mean pretty much EVERYTHING (although I never tried accutane). I decided to do a video covering everything I ever tried. I had no idea how hard that would be! It's been like a giant jigsaw puzzle - sorting through all my attempts, sorting through old pictures, filming it, editing it all together, editing all the pictures of my attempts... I can

My Acne Story - How I made it through

Hi!  I'm Shay & I used to blog on here back when I suffered with awful, hormonal, cystic acne (that left me with tons of scars). I do not suffer with acne anymore (I get the occasional small zit but it's no big deal) but I still have the scars - especially on my cheek areas.  I'm hoping to share some knowledge, or even just support, for those needing it. I KNOW how horrible it is to go through this. I remember spending most of my free time on acne.org either blogging or desperately sea
