I've been using it for over 7 months. While it has cleared out and purged my skin A TON, I'm still dealing with pores purging and because of it, frustrating red marks. I'm just so tired of breaking out and having to cover it up with concealer and powder... I'm praying that my face will heal and get better so that I can enjoy my weekend.
Has anyone else been on Atralin or a topical retinoid for 7+ months?? I really, really could use advice!
I had a couple of annoying small clogged pores that I messed with and my face is healing from them. There's two small pink marks on my skin. I have one more small pore on my left cheek that I tried to clear up, and probably should have just let it purge on its own.
I'm trying to remember to be gentle with my skin. I'm not going to use Atralin tonight on the spots that are sensitive. Things are getting clearer each week, but my patience is definitely being tested.
Say a prayer if you could, that I can stay patient and be kind to my skin!
Tomorrow marks 7 months of this regimen: Topical retinoid- Atralin brand (0.05%) a pea-size amount, applied once per night, 30 mins after applying moisturizer and letting it sink in to my skin. Also, I've been taking 75 mg of Spironolactone each morning, and one pill of Ortho Tri-Cyclen.
My skin has been a rollercoaster of purging, healing, and then being clear. But I have to say that my face continues to improve, week by week.
Some weeks are better than others, though. I've had my period more frequently than I should have because I missed my birth control, so my face broke out a bit the past few days. Right now, there's a few pink marks that are healing, and I had one annoying pore purge on my left lower cheek/chin area.
I'm glad to see that the Atralin has purged almost all of the clogged pores under my skin, and that very few remain (I hope!). It's hard to tell when I'll feel like my face has fully purged all of the clogged pores and is on its way towards consistent clarity. I really, really hope this month is a turning point and that things are much easier from here on out.
If anyone else has been on a topical retinoid for 6+ months, I'd love to know how the following months were for you and your skin!
This week has been pretty good so far! I've had a few small pores purge--there's honestly not many left on my entire face that are clogged, which is amazing! I have one clogged pore on my right cheek that I'm hoping will purge and go away/ heal by tomorrow. Overall, I have a couple of small pink and red healing marks. My chin, cheeks, and face overall is SO much more clear than it ever has been. Praying that I can stay patient with this regimen and resist touching/ messing with my face! I'm only a couple of weeks away from the 7 months completed mark. Wow. This has been such a long journey, but it is finally starting to pay off
The right-side of my face is clear, but the left side of my face is still healing in a couple of places. There's one annoying spot on my left temple that won't seem to go away. Also, there's a red mark on my left cheek and one small on my chin. There's a small red mark on my forehead from what I think/ thought was a clogged pore. I can't really tell. All in all, this isn't too bad, especially since I currently have my period, and my skin usually goes nuts during it. I've been applying moisturizer and my usual skincare routine. I'm hoping these marks heal up today and tonight! Fingers crossed!!! Overall, my skin has purged a number of small pores the past week and has gotten a lot more clear overall. Slowly, but surely the RetinA is clearing up my skin.
I've finished 23 full weeks on a topical retinoid, and I have just 7 days until I can say that I've been on this regimen for a full 6 months. I've been keeping up with my birth control (Ortho Tri-Cyclen), Topical Retinoid at night (Atralin 0.05%), and Spironolactone (75 mg in the AM). RIght now, I have a couple of small red marks on my right cheek/ jaw from pores purging, and one pore that purge on my right cheek bone today. I have one red mark on my chin from a pore that purged, but also sensitive skin that reacted badly to the Atralin. I'm focusing on letting my skin heal and being gentle with it. I'm finally feeling like most of the pores on my face have purged and that my face is very clear! Here's to being gentle with my skin and things continuing to improve! Keep me in your thoughts and prayers, please!
If you read my last blog post, the past week has been a ROUGH one. Seriously-- I was incredibly down about my skin and for a few days, I didn't even leave my apartment. Trust me when I say that it was THAT bad. I had messed with and pushed/ picked at my skin while using a topical retinoid and literally layers of my skin on my right cheek peeled off. Disgusting--and so bad for my skin. After days of treating my skin more gently, eating healthy, and moisturizing like crazy, my skin is nearly mended. I only have one tiny red mark on my chin and one small pink one that's easily covered with a dot of concealer on my right cheek. I have one clogged pore on my chin, but when I use the topical retinoid tonight, I think it will purge naturally tomorrow or Sunday. On Wednesday of this week I began Week 23. That means that as of next Wednesday I will be just 1 week away from the 6 month mark. WOW. This regimen has been great at getting years-worth of clogged pores purged from my skin, but I honestly have to say that it's been one of the hardest things I've ever done. This weekend and week my goal is to keep eating healthy, work out more, treat my skin VERY gently, and be patient. I'm praying that I can remember that this regimen takes time and that often, I'm the one making my skin look red/ irritated when I mess with it. I'm going to tell myself out loud "hands off" when I catch myself wanting to push pores out/pick at my skin. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers this week If anyone else is on a topical retinoid, I'd love to hear how you're doing or how it worked for you!
So I royally messed up my face the other day. I messed with 2 clogged pores on the right side of my face and made what wouldn't have been a bit deal at all, a total mess. My skin got irritated and then ripped and peeled. UGH. It was terrible. Slowly, my skin on my right cheek is healing, and I also have a red mark on my left cheek from a clogged pore there. My skin is really, really sensitive still, which I forgot. I'm applying moisturizer like crazy, but for the past 2 nights I have NOT applied RetinA. I want my skin to heal almost entirely before I add that back into my regimen. I need to go to the grocery store tomorrow, but I'm dreading putting on a ton of concealer just to feel okay going out in public I really, really, really hate this. Once my skin heals and is normal-looking, I'm NOT going to squeeze/press/pick at it.
I need to learn my lesson and 1- stop pressing/ picking at zits, esp while using Retin A and 2- not over-apply Retin A to my skin I have a HUGE dark red mark/ spot of peeling skin on my right cheek, smack dab in the middle and a red mark on my lower right cheek/jaw I've drank a ton of water, taken two multi-vitamins, drank green tea, applied a green tea bag to the red mark area, and then applied CeraVe moisturizer and Neosporin to the red mark. Please pray that it heals tonight and tomorrow :/ I don't want to have a weekend where I'm hiding my face again. I was doing so well and my face was getting really clear
I messed with a clogged pore on my face and applied Retin A to the area, which made my skin red and sensitive. I'm hoping that by icing it, and applying a lot of moisturizer and CeraVe cream, my skin will be able to repair itself and look normal by tomorrow!
It's Day 145 and the past couple of weeks have been pretty good. Last week I had my time of the month (a bit early--again), and I had a couple of annoying spots--one in particular on my left temple by my hair, but it went away within a couple of days. Of course, I did make it worse by squeezing/ messing with it. My skin is still pretty sensitive/fragile in places, especially after I wash it. I'm trying to be more gentle and not mess with clogged pores, but it really is easier said than done. Right now I have one small pore that is healing/ going to purge in the next day or so. Also, I have a couple of small pink marks on my right lower cheek from a pore that purged this weekend. All in all, things continue to improve and it feels like my skin has gotten rid of almost all of the deep clogged pores. This has been a long and very hard journey, but I am so glad that I've stuck through it--through the very, very worst. And now, things are looking up. I'm very thankful for that. I'm hoping from here on out it's just little ones that go away easily/ on their own. Pray that I can be patient and gentle with myself as things continue. Wednesday marks 21 weeks done on this regimen-- that's 5 months and 1 week in total. I'll be very excited to see how my face is in 3 more weeks and 3 days at the 6 months completed mark
It's Day 129 (still in the middle of week 19). Things are finally starting to heal. THANK GOODNESS. Seriously. After like 7 days of absolutely terrible skin, it's so, so nice to just be covering up some red marks and be able to go out in public and feel somewhat decent. I still have 1 small red mark on my left cheek that's healing (from a deep clogged pore that purged there), 1 small one on my left jawline, 2 on my right jawline, and 1 small one on my chin. I'm still taking my meds as I should, drinking a ton of water, eating healthy food, taking a multi-vitamin, and hoping that things continue to improve. I am in the midst of my cycle, and I need to find out before my next one how to deal with the hormones and acne. I am taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen regularly, but I'm still getting my period a week early every time--around 3 weeks instead of 4 :/ I really want to just take 2 packs and go 2 months without a period, but my body never lets me do that. Here's hoping that things continue to heal and improve, and that I can feel happy and confident at work this week and next weekend! Thank you if you said a quick prayer for me--it really means a lot!
I'm in Chicago this weekend to visit my Dad, and I really want to be the real me--the one who loves to be social and be out and about. It's very hard to be that person with a lot of active acne/ acne marks. But, for my dad, I'm going to try my very best. I am hoping that with drinking more water tonight, taking my multi-vitamin, and eating some more veggies, I can give my skin what it needs to heal a lot overnight. Right now I have 1 red mark (from a deeper pore that purged on my left cheek), and a couple of pink marks on my left jawline, and a couple of pink marks on my right jawline, and one on my chin. Please, please say a small prayer for me that my skin heals up and that this regimen continues to clear it. I have struggled with this for so long, and such a long list of other more major medical problems for the past 15 years, and I really just want to feel confident and beautiful at 23-years-old.
I'm a bit discouraged. It's been 127 days on this regimen...and I just started Week 19. In just another couple of weeks, I'll have been on it for 5 months total. Sigh. Right now, I have a pink mark on my left cheek, two small ones on my chin, one on my right cheek, and one on my right lower jawline. The Benzoyl Peroxide face wash (PanOxyl 4% in the AM) is drying my face out a bit, but making things start to heal; plus, it's killing the bacteria on my skin. I've been using the Atralin (Retin-A gel 0.05%, but not on the spots of skin that are really sensitive/red. I'm still taking the Spironolactone (75 mg/day) and the Ortho Tri-cyclen birth control each morning. To wash my face, I'm still using the CeraVe Moisturizing Facial Cleanser and then moisturizing with the CeraVe Moisturizer (am and pm). Then, at night, I'm applying extra moisturizer and vaseline over these spots. I'm trying to get back into the groove again with eating tons of veggies, fruits, whole grains, fish, and lean protein. Also, I'm taking a multi-vitamin again and drinking tons of water. Hoping this helps my skin heal and get clear! Any advice??
I've been on this regimen for 18 weeks officially, which is 126 days. I start week 19 tomorrow. (though, I did take a couple weeks off the Spironolactone at one point). My skin has healed up a lot... but I still have one big red mark/scab on my right cheek and one on my right lower jaw. It's literally been a week since I've felt comfortable enough in my skin to be able to hang out with people, which is really bumming me out. I'm going to drink a ton of water this afternoon and then go get a bunch of fruits and veggies and hope that helps tonight! Please, pray for me!
My face had a pretty deep clogged pore on my lower right jawline, and needless to say, I initially pinched it/poked at it. It got red and somewhat more inflamed. I tried to calm it down the past couple days, and I've made it worse. I really made it worse last night by putting hydrogen peroxide on the area. Pretty much it's very red, very inflamed, and I will not be going out of my apartment until it's calmed down and started to heal... so that pretty much means my entire Saturday will be spent inside (away from the sun), and away from other people. I'm dreading my roommate coming home later and asking me what my plans are for Saturday night, because if she's staying in, then I can't lie and say I'll be going out for a bit.. I put a couple drops of tea tree oil on a cotton ball with water and applied it to the area. There's also a couple more spots on the right side of my face-- one on my forehead and one healing red mark on my jaw. Encouragement? Advice? Tips to heal faster? Please-- I need it! Right now the only things I know how to do for healing are: -Warm compresses every so often -Moisturizing -Antibiotic cream and a bandaid over it -Drink green tea and tons of water -Eat a lot of Vitamin C *Need to get a multivitamin again
It's Day 121.. which is very weird to say. Last week my skin was pretty good, but I had a few red marks that I was covering from two weeks ago, still. Only a couple of small pores purged. This week, things were going great, just a few small red marks that were still healing. However, I got one inflamed underground clogged pore on my right lower jawline that was painful to the touch. I tried not to push/pick at it, esp. since it was under the skin a lot. I washed my face twice yesterday with my Benzoyl Peroxide facewash, and applied a little bit extra to the spot this morning. All day, pretty much I've had a bit of my mint julep mask on it. Mostly to prevent myself from touching it, but also to dry up the spot and heal it. The rest of my small red marks are healing and fading, which is very encouraging. There's one other small zit on my forehead by my hairline, but it's small and going away. Here's hoping that this one on my lower right jawline will go away over night and heal up! Wish me luck please!!! I'm glad that it's already been 121 days... there's been a lot of ups and downs, but I can honestly say that my face and pores have literally purged out almost all of the clogged gunk underneath (probably from years and years ago, as I've had acne for about 11+ years). Looking forward to seeing how month 5 ends up, and starting month 6 next week! Xoxo, Hopeful
It's Day 109...only a few days away from the 4 month mark of being on RetinA and OrthoTriCyclen (I stopped taking Spironolactone a few weeks ago, but may get back on it after talking with my dermatologist this week). I have a red mark on my left chin, a couple of red marks on my right cheek that are healing slowly, and a red mark on my right chin. I'm trying to help my skin heal as much as I can by cleansing it, moisturizing it, and applying antibiotic cream to protect it. I really, really hope there's significant healing from today to tomorrow. Please. Please heal, skin! The rest of my face really feels like it's gotten rid of a ton of clogged pores, which is encouraging. I'm hoping the start of month 5 on Wednesday will be a great step forward to clearer skin!
I had a couple weeks of great skin--granted, a pore purging here and there, but still, overall a clear complexion. I could tell that there were still small pores that would purge, but they weren't yet. Then this past week, my period came (a week early again) and my skin went haywire. I had a bunch of clogged pores pushing out, whiteheads, and deeper pores coming to the surface. In two cases, I made things A LOT worse. I pushed/picked at my skin and in its fragile state, it ripped :/ I have one red mark on my right cheek that's finally healing, and one really bad red mark on my chin that won't seem to heal all the way. I'm hoping it is just taking longer. I've been applying moisturizer to it non-stop for 4 days, along with neosporin. I'm pretty bummed right now, and I just wish these few spots would heal and clear up. My skin seems to be getting rid of other clogged pores, but it's these marks that are awful to look at/be seen with. Any advice on speeding up the healing of red marks?
It's been a few days since I've posted. I'm a bit perplexed because I feel like there are very few clogged pores left on my face. And yet, I've gotten some deeper zits the past week or so. A couple weeks ago I had a flare of purging, then things got so much better and my face healed, and then a bit more purging, more healing, and now a couple more deep zits that have or are purging. A few have been in places where I haven't purged yet, like this deeper one on my right upper cheek. So I guess that makes sense - - it's a pore that hasn't purged until now. But, ow.this one in particular is right next to where I had a very, very deep and inflamed pore purge last week. I'm starting week 13, and which seems like a lot... And I was hoping to be clear or nearly after the 3 Month, 12 week mark. But, my skin has improved SO much in the past 12 weeks that I know I should be patient and give it time. I am going to schedule a 3 Month check in with my dermatologist for next week to see what she says and thinks. She saw me 3 months ago, though, when I was crying in her office because I could barely force myself to put on a ton of makeup just to go outside in public. Here's hoping that this deep zit on my right cheek purges by the morning and that my face continues to improve and become 100% clear.
Hey everyone- I've been on this regimen for 77 days. Wow. That just seems like a lot. Tomorrow marks the start of week 12. Some stuff has changed over the past couple weeks: It seems like I have 1 week that my skin is great, and then another following it where my skin is purging a bit/breaking out My skin was not as bad as it would be during that time of the month, thanks to the ortho tri-cyclen birth control & spironolactone I had a number of small pores purge around my cheeks and face last week, but they went away
Yesterday, I had a pretty big set back with 1 huge stubborn inflamed zit on my lower right jaw/cheek, 1 zit on my chin with a red mark, 3 small pores purging on my face, 1 of which left a medium-sized red/dark mark that is currently healing.
Here's the state of things:Active zits: 1 zit that has been inflamed and tender to the touch for days (near the bottom of my jaw, but farther back by my ear, not my chin). It feels like it's going to surface and purge, but then doesn't. Today, I had kinda had enough, and after applying a warm washcloth, I gently squeezed it. It seemed like it popped, but nothing came out right away. I washed it with Benzoyl Peroxide facewash and warm water, and then applied the warm washcloth for about 10 mins, on and off. Then, I pressed on it again and the pore purged--but it was literally so small...there wasn't that much in there.... So, I'm wondering if there's another clogged pore next to it/within it? Any way, I applied a couple drops of tea tree oil and warm water to a cotton pad and applied it to the zit for a few minutes...hoping that soothes it and helps! [*]1 odd zit on my chin that can't decide if it's going to purge or if it's dried up. I have a feeling there's a small acne seed under the healing part that isn't ready to surface yet. So, the best I can do is apply the tea tree oil and let it be. [*]Red marks [*]1 red mark where that stubborn zit is on my right lower jaw [*]1 red mark/scab healing on my face near my right laugh line--put the tea tree oil/water cotton pad on this area briefly and then applied moisturizer and antibiotic ointment [*]2 small pink marks from small pores that purged on my right cheek. [*]1 weird zit on my chin that can't decide what it's doing. [*]Left side of face--totally clear. No zits or pores purging at all. Knock on wood! [*]Right side of face--a few red/healing marks, the 1 zit/mark on my chin, & that 1 stubborn zit on my jawline All in all, my face has gotten SO much better since I started, or even since a few weeks ago. My forehead is pretty much entirely clear and clog-free, same with my left side of my face. I'm hoping this is the last major purge for my face (esp for the right side). It's exciting to start week 12! I heard from people after 3 months (12 weeks) is when they see that they aren't purging anymore! Woo! Fingers crossed! Til then, I'm going to let my skin heal tonight and hope it looks better tomorrow with a few dabs of concealer!
So the past few days were a bit rough. But it's Day 64 and for now, things are looking up. I started my 10th week on this regimen today--which is a pretty big milestone. 3 more full weeks and I will have been on this regimen for 3 months (woah!) That's also the point when I've heard many people experience less purging, which I hope is the case for me! To recap, over the past few days I had a few small pores that purged on my right cheek, and then 3 deeper pores that purged (2 on my right cheekbone and 1 on my right temple). I've continued using my regimen, but have applied extra moisturizer to these areas before applying the RetinA (tretinoin gel) at night. Here's how things are looking: Red Marks 1 small pink mark on right temple from stubborn pore that purged 2 small pink marks on right cheekbone from deep pores that purged 1 small pink mark on left jawline from a stubborn pore that purged? I think? couple of small light pink marks on left jawline from pores that purged last week Actives None right now (knock on wood pleaseeeee) [*]About to Purge? [*]1 small pore to the right of my lip that looks like it's pushing up [*]1 small pore on my right lower chin that looks like it might purge or dry up? [*]1 small clogged pore on my right forehead that looks like it may eventually work its way up or dry up? Things are looking up and I'm really hopeful that they will continue to improve. But, I need to take a deep breath when I notice a pore coming to the surface or purging. Rather than getting frantic, I need to take a breath, continue with my regimen, and let the pore slowly dry up/ shrink. Because honestly, when I push/pick at the pores, they become red, inflamed, and scab-like. Which is not pretty and much more noticeable than a small whitehead. I've been increasing my healthy foods/veggie intake and making an effort to drink 8-10 glasses of water each day. I'm going to increase my exercising this weekend and next week, too (since I've fallen off the wagon with that the past 2 weeks) I'm trying to take more deep breaths and be more calm. Maybe I'll get a yoga mat this weekend and start going to yoga again.
It's day 62 and tomorrow will mark my 63rd day (9 weeks) on this regimen. Right now, the state of my face is still slightly disappointing, but I know the pores that purged needed to go, and it'll make my skin a lot more clear long-term. Here's what's going on: Marks 1 small mark on my left jawline (the other mark pretty much healed and went away) 3 red marks (all in the same spot) on my right cheek--one from a deep pore that purged, another from a deep pore that purged, and one from a small pore that purged today 1 scab type mark on my right temple from a stubborn clogged pore that I picked/ messed with :/ I currently have antibiotic ointment and a bad-aid over it right now :/ Hoping it heals up over the next couple of days
1 scab type mark on right temple--not sure the clogged pore underneath purged all the way Say a prayer that my face continues to heal and improve. I'm getting a bit impatient
It's Day 61, and in a couple of days, I'll have completed 9 weeks on this regimen. A couple of days ago, I had a number of small pores purge on my right cheek and on my cheekbone. One of them was a tiny indent/scar, but was actually a clogged pore underneath from years ago. That pore purged and the gunk came out. It was a bit sensitive and is still healing. Right now, I have a clogged pore on my right temple that will hopefully purge soon, and one on my left cheek, a couple inches above my jawline. Here's the state of things right now: Marks 2 small darker marks along my left jawline--healing from pores that purged this week Small pink mark to left of my nose from a pore that purged there today 1 medium size mark on my right cheek from the deep, long-term clogged pore that purged the other day a couple of small very light pink marks on my right jawline from pores that purged a couple days ago Actives 1 stubborn clogged pore on my right temple---so annoying--no idea when it'll go away 1 stubborn and inflamed clogged pore on my right cheekbone---really wish this would purge & go away!!! 1 small clogged pore on my right cheek that looks like it'll purge tomorrow 1 clogged pore on my left jawline All in all, my face is doing well, and will be much more clear after this current slight purging/healing phase. The zits bothering me most are the one on my right temple, which won't seem to come to a head, and the one on my left jawline. Hoping the 2 dark marks on my left jawline and the one on my right cheek heals soon :/ Last week was just so amazing, that having the past few days with pores purging and healing is just a bit disappointing. However, I know that things will get so much better...I just need to be patient and not pick at my skin!
My skin was pretty much clear for the past week, but I could tell that there were some tiny, small pores that were clogged across my face and under my lip that would eventually purge. The past day and a half I've started to get a bunch of very tiny, small pores purging across my right cheek and a couple on my left jawline. I've been pretty bad the past few days about following my skin care regimen perfectly (as I went out a couple of nights and slept in concealer or didn't apply my topical retinoid that evening). Also, I've missed a couple doses of the antibiotic I was on, and had more sugar/alcohol/carbs than I usually ever do the past few days. I'm getting back in the swing of things by taking my medicines, following my regimen completely, and eating more vegetables and healthier overall. I know it's actually a good thing because the rest of the small, clogged pores are purging and my face will be even more clear after, but today is going to be a bit difficult. I'm glad to know, though, that it will keep getting better . I'm pretty excited for weeks 10-12, as I heard those are the weeks that most of the smaller pores have purged and your face becomes even more clear and bright! Right now, I have like 5 small red dots on my right cheek from the small pores that purged yesterday and today, and I have 2 healing marks on my left jawline from pores that purged there (one that is a bit sensitive right now). This is definitely a process, but it's awesome to see how much things can improve in just a few days or a week! Here's hoping my skin will heal tonight and look a ton better by tomorrow!
