Benzoyl peroxide has effectively lessen my acne but it's so hard to find it in a formulation that that works without irritating my skin. I actually have not tried 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, but once I can I am planning on trying out Dan's benzoyl peroxide because it seems to be well formulated. Benzoyl peroxide actually works to get rid of acne because it introduces oxygen into the pore to kill bacteria like the acne causing p.acnes strain. Without actual antibacterial ingredients in your skincare, you won't be able to get rid of acne or lessen it though topical treatments. -- Other antibacterial treatments to consider are: -Salicyclic acid (BHA) in the form of a leave on exfoliant that is formulated at the right pH for it to be most effective -Tea Tree Oil as a spot treatment diluted in a carrier solution, or as an additive to face masks and other face products like moisturizer/facial oil -Neem Oil as a spot treatment (stinks a lot tho) -Sulfur as a spot treatment -Clindamycin, a prescription topical available in 1% creams -Azelaic Acid, effective at higher percentages (8-20%), also lessens post inflammatory hyper pigmentation without lightening skin tone -Niacinamide, one thing I've found effective at reduce Post Inflammatory Erythema, also antibacterial and helps prevent acne -- I've currently tried the following benzoyl peroxide treatments: Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10 - 10% benzoyl peroxide and way too irritating, housed in a gel formula that is thick and unmanageable. Made my face hot and itchy whenever I used it Paula's Choice Clear Extra Strength Daily skin clearing treatment w/ 5% benzoyl peroxide - 5% is still way too uch to me because I would still experience redness and irritation in response to using it. I've tried using it a couple of ways, like using short contact therapy, and starting with the smallest amount. My skin eventually acclimated to the product, but not enough because I was still experiencing irritation bumps in response to it, even when it was clearing my active acne and preventing new raised lesions. Paulas choice says their BP is better than the acne, org because it contains the anti-irritants biasabol and allatonin where as the acne.org benzoyl peroxide contains none. Despite that, I've seen reports of less people experiencing irritation to the acne.org treatment than to the Paulas choice treatment of the same strength (2.5% benzoyl peroxide). It's also far more pricier, and you get more from acne.org, which is helpful because it can be used all over the body and the face and still be affordable and cost efficient. Paulas Choice raises a point that the Acne.org cause in big quantities, and that benzoyl peroxide is rendered less effective after awhile, but I don't this is an issue if you by the 8oz of benzoyl peroxide from acne.org and use it on both your face and body (neck, chest, back, booty) -- Things to keep in mind about benzoyl peroxide: BENZOYL PEROXIDE IS BEST USED AT NIGHT ONLY benzoyl peroxide can increase your skins sensitivity to the sun and because of its drying nature can also cause irritation throughout the day. Anecdotally I have found it works best once the sun has gone down and during the night. Sunscreen can help lessen the photosensitive effects of benzoyl peroxide, but it'd best to avoid applying it before sun exposure. BENZOYL PEROXIDE CANNOT BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH TRETINOIN: The two actives oxidize in the presence of one another make eachother ineffective. If you must use both, use them on alternating nights. BENZOYL PEROXIDE DOESNT HAVE TO BE USED EVERYDAY TO EFFECTIVELY REDUCE ACNE it can be used as little as once a week and still keep acne under control, find what works for you and minimize your chances of irritation, BENZOYL PEROXIDE CANNOT BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH HYDROQUNINONE you may experience darkening of the skin if you use the two together (like applying one right after the other). A solution is to apply your hydroquninone product in the morning and your benzoyl peroxide product at night, or alternate nights BENZOYL PEROXIDE WORKS BEST ALL OVER THE FACE AND NOT AS A TREATMENT Gycolic acid or a high percentage BHA works better as a spot treatment, benzoyl peroxide works better when used all over the face. DO NOT RUB BENZOYL PEROXIDE INTO THE SKIN I've learned this from experience... Just follow Dans advice and minimize irritation -- My plans with Benzoyl Peroxide I'm going to purchase Dan's treatment and test that out on my face in small quantities as well as use it to treat my Bacne
I've been reluctant to write this post. I know after I complete this post I'm going to be hard on myself and the things I'm doing in life. I'm tired of being lazy, stagnant, non moving, I hate getting stressed over it because then I breakout and then I become preoccupied with my skin. I've been more than preoccupied with my skin, it has consumed my entire life, my entire life revolves around hoping that I will see improvement in my skin. It should be looking better by now, I'm on spiro, I'm using benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, Tretinoin, Niacinamide, Azelaic acid. All these well researched ingredients that are supposed to be antibacterial and kill p.acnes. Yet I'm still breaking out. Up until now, I guess I've been way too harsh on myself, way to harsh on my skin. Just last night I put on BP, washed it off aggressively, and took a long hot bath which was not okay. My whole face was red And it accentuated my post acne marks. When I think about it, I only have a few active breakouts, and textural issues. Of course I've always had my plethora of PIH and PIE, but it will go away over time. It's not that bad. I've done everything I can on the skincare end, now all I have to do is stick to it religiously as well carry out the internal end of it, as well as other things ♥ Always sleep on a clean pillow sheet or 100% cotton tshirt ♥ Exercise daily if you can ♥ Drink at least 128oz of water everyday (8 glasses) ♥ Get all your work done! ♥ Never go to bed dirty ♥ Shower daily ♥ No dairy ♥ No sweets, processed foods, or processed sugars ♥ Go gluten free --- TODAY'S SINS: I had pumpkin cake that has dairy and gluten and refined sugars in it, but I promise I won't eat anything else similar. -- GOALS: ♥ Clean Room ♥ Read on treadmill ♥ Get on track ♥ Clean bathroom and organize skincare cabinet ♥ Organize makeup -- I bought myself more of my favorite Paulas choice sunscreen as well as things to patch test, I'm excited! If the patch testing goes well for any of the products I will consider purchasing them.
