Well my attempt to blog throughout this whole process was a huge fail, but I just had to come post an update. Six months after starting accutane I AM ZIT FREE! I have not had a new pimple in about a month. I have just a couple weeks left on accutane now. Is this a dream? Accutane is a rough medication to be on, but my only regret is not doing this years ago. Dry lips, red patchy skin, and back aches were my biggest issues but so worth waking up and looking back at clear skin in the mirror. I still have dark marks and scarring, but I'm hoping that they will fade with time. I don't really have any crater type scars.. mostly just discoloration. Does anyone have any tips for helping speed up the fade process? If you are on the fence about trying this medicine.. I highly suggest doing it before the acne scars your skin more and more. I had consistent mild/moderate cystic acne for 12 years, and accutane cleared it up in about 5 months at 60mg a day. Wish you all the best of luck! I added a before and after picture.. I'm not wearing make up so the scars are visible, but make up covers them pretty well.
I just finished my first month of accutane, and these side effects are the worst! I got dry lips and skin almost immediately after starting treatment. The one upside is that I used to have to wash my hair daily or it would be a greasy mess, and now I've been going 3 or 4 days between washes! Then about a week ago my eyelid became very swollen and hurt so bad. I went to the eye doctor, and she said that the oil glands in my eyelid were clogged from the accutane. She squeezed them and within a couple days the swelling and pain was gone. Now for the last two days I have had the worst lower back pain ever. I'm a college student and my three hour classes are torture sitting still.. It hurts so bad! I'm laying on a heating pad now hoping it will help. Has anyone else experienced these side effects or am I the unlucky one? As for my face I think I am in the initial breakout stage. I feel like there's a new breakout every time I look in the mirror. Luckily, they seem to heal faster than usual too. I have noticed a decrease in blackheads though and they come out very easily now, and my pores are looking huge. I hope they shrink back again. Well, I guess that's it for now! On to month two!
Hi all! Well I'm on day 5 of accutane and not much to update. I drank over a gallon of water yesterday and staying hydrated seemed to help with the headaches. I am feeling dry and sensitive. I'm now using cetaphil cleanser to wash my face instead of exfoliating. One question I have for you all is if anyone drank alcohol while on accutane? My derm never mentioned anything about it, but I know the drug can be hard on your liver. I usually drink a glass of wine or beer every night, but I haven't since starting treatment. Any advice would be helpful! I'll throw in a progress picture too. My forehead is completely clear today, so that makes me happy! My scars are the worst part.
Well, I guess I'm officially a blogger! This site really helped me decide to go forward trying accutane, so I decided I would document my journey as well. I will start by noting that I have suffered with somewhat mild acne for 11 years. I'm now 23 years old and have tried pretty much everything to clear up my face. I have taken a few different antibiotics, prescription creams and gels, hormonal drugs, proactiv, chemical peels, expensive clairisonic brushes, home remedies, and over the counter products. Accutane is my last resort. So far I have had two negative pregnancy tests, taken the online tests, and promised that I would not conceive a mutant baby while on accutane. I picked up my prescription and am now on Day 3 of treatment. I'm taking the brand Absorica to be exact 40mg once daily. I'm not sure if it is too early to have side effects, but so far I have had some mild headaches and I do feel drier. Also I am terrified at the idea of the initial breakout! Has anyone gotten lucky and not had one with this drug? I would love any feedback anyone has to offer!
