I have only been on Acne.org a few days now but noticing that people ARE understanding the link between diet, wellness, a health lifestyle, and acne.
They really are ALL connected.
Acne is a sign from our bodies that 1) we are producing to much oil and it is coming out on our skin. 2) there are toxins within our bodies and it is coming out...on our face.
Finding a healthy balance in what we eat..how we live and what we are putting on our face ALL makes a big difference.
I understand a lot is hormanal. A lot of mine has been. But its really attacking this from the inside and out that reaps the greatest benefits.
I felt inspired to share on here. ONLY those who have dealt with skin issues knows how painful it can be physically, mentally, and emotionally. I certainly do. I took my crystal clear, perfect skin for granted. Here was my previous regimen, it's not uncommon, so many girls will relate, and it will clearly show how I set myself up for where I am now ( as far as my skin is concerned)
-i was in the tanning beds five times a week, right around the age of 16. 9 times out of 10- I tanned while I had makeup on or I would tan then go somewhere right after. Not washing my face.
- I used Clean & Clear continuous acne cream cleanser everyday. Then was using hempz lotion ON MY FACE daily and nightly. I used this because I thought it was a good moisturizer since I tanned.
- I washed my face daily but also did not have a care in the world as far as what makeup I used or what I put on my face.
-I worked out everyday , usually in makeup then usually went somewhere after- not showering.
-I was not on any birth control of any kind
Why am I telling you my skin regime before all the acne hit?? Because I am a FIRM believer at this point that the things I did to my skin PLUS hormones..is what really set my face off. LIke it just got angry. \
It started when I was 24 with one spot on my right cheek. That kept breaking up and going away. This turned into cystic acne. The kind where they would get really huge..then when they would pop..it would be a big sore/scab for days. gross but you know what I mean.
I finally caved and stopped over the counter treating and went to my first dermatologist at 25. Unfortunatly....I got stuck with a PA. Take my advice...ALWAYS see a real dermatologist and not just an assistant. They are so much more knowledgeable and helpful. I have been on NUMEROUS regimes. Here's what doesnt work and this is across the board and applies to anyone:
- Retin A- a KNOWN medication to realy dry your skin out. for me..I had chemical burns from it almost monthly, which led to constant peeling of my face and embarrassing side effects.
-Clindamycin..works to get superficial bacterial on the face. but over time...your body adjusts and it stops working. Its only skin deep, in how it works.
-Tretinoin- another type of Retin A..extremely drying and very painful
Here is what DOES work and I guarentee you can work for you:
-For girls- birth control. your hormones change and thats what happened when my whole body chemistry just went haywire. So to combat...find a birth control that works for you. You need one though that still allows you to have a monthly cycle. Without having a regular period...your body is not doing its proper cleansing ...ie leading to BAD breakouts during the time of the month when you are supposed to have one. What worked for me was Ortho Tri Cylen..what didnt was Yaz.
-Solodyn..takes FOREVER to work...but really does!!!!!
- To combat being on an antibiotic..take your antibiotic in the morning and a good probitic right before bed. A good one is Ulitimate Flora.
-Aczone...NON drying...NOT harsh and takes awhile as well to work.but relaly changes the makeup of how your acne appears. Suddenly my cystic, crazy acne is more manageable. I STILL get acne bumps...2 weeks ago it was a huge one on the right side. But...aczone keeps the zit controlled and once it is popped (on its own/),,,the aftermath is so much better. no scaring or crazy scabs.
-I recommend a good clay mask..personal favorite brand is Evan Healy..green tea mask. - A big lesson I learned was I was not ACTIVELY purging my skin. Suddenly at 24...my body started purging itself. in a crazy way..all over my face!!!
Clay masks help draw out impurities and detoxify. So do not freak if your acne seems to get worse before better. But it truly is drawing everything out.
-get GOOD makeup. The best brand out there is Jane Iredale. expensive but absolutely a thousand percent worth it. Even helped when I would burn my face with Retin A. Helped soothe and cover.
-NO TANNING!!! I am 3 months clean and sober of that and couldnt be happier. it absolutely contributes to horrrible acne. It is such a myth that it actually helps.
-EAT clean. You are what you eat. If you eat bad..the body is going to be full of toxins and then expel them one way or another...usually a lot ends up on your face. Um ew.
So less sugar..more fruits/veggies/whole grains. and not a lot of caffiene. that makes you breakout.
This was long but truly a real story of someone blindsided by this and struggling to fully comprehend and get a grip on what my body was trying to tell me. That is truly what acne is...a sign from your body that there are things NOT GOOD in your body and that you are doing to your body ( ie ..skin regime)
