Week 1- Day 7

Today was day 7. I am definitely feeling an effect, I am waking up with whiteheads everyday which I NEVER used to have... my acne usually stayed under the skin so this is a good sign. Except I can see sooooo many clogged pores I hope they don't all turn into whiteheads! That's a nightmare! My lips are chapped, and the tip of my nose has started peeling like I had a minor sunburn or something. I haven't had any headaches yet, I'm not more tired than usual, so otherwise I feel fine. The chapped lips I'm trying to prevent before letting them get bad... they're ALWAYS covered in vaseline, or vitamin E, or burts bees. Burts bees lasts the longest so I've been mostly using that. Not much to update other than that. I really hope this initial breakout clears up quick, I would WAY rather deal with dry skin than cysts/whiteheads I started a vlog on youtube as well for anyone who might be following this, it's nessonaccutane. Anyways, I have high hopes and am SO looking forward to this all being over... ugh. -Jness

Getting Clear With Accutane

Hey everyone. I am not new to this site, but I am new to blogging so bear with me. I decided to create this blog hoping that I might be able to help someone struggling with skin issues like I have been all my life. That's what this site is about, and I'm happy to be a part of it. I'll tell you a little about myself, in the hopes maybe someone out there can relate I am 22 years old, in my final year of university. I'm studying environmental design, which is kind of a cross between landscape architecture, and interior architecture. Eventually I want to become a certified architect. I am strong, confident, and (almost always) a positive person. The last few years have been hard on me, I went through a bad breakup this summer- but I'm trying to become a better person out of that experience. I have been dealing with skin issues since I was 15, and have finally decided to stop 'trying' things and take accutane to end this battle. Here's a breif timeline of things I have tried throughout the years; feel free to ask questions about any of my persona experiences with any of them! 15 years old- developed mild cystic acne, doctor put me on the pill & it seemed to work initially. (I have been on the pill ever since. Tricyclin Lo) 16 years old- cyctic acne began to get worse, I began breaking out on my back/shoulders. I played sports and thought it might be from wearing sweaty gym clothes, but I was always adamant about showering as soon as I could. Doctor prescribed minocycline, a 30 day cycle, it worked like a charm. 17/18 years old- I was still dealing with breakouts, both on my back and face, which didn't seem to relate to my cycle. I was prescribed clindoxyl gel (clindamycin mixed with benzoyl peroxide), it worked but I was never 'clear'. 19/20/21 years old- This has been the hardest time for me.. I've literally tried everything from going 100% natural & organic (witch hazel, teatree, chamomille, aloe plant gel, etc), to home remedies (aspirin masks, egg whites, honey & oats...), to different brands (proactiv, body shop seaweed, body shop teatree, lush, normaderm, clean & clear, cetaphil).. during this time my doctor also prescribed a year of minocycline which I found was the most effective- but again, I was never 'clear'. I always had at least 2 or 3 cyctic bumps... painful. I used to only break out on my chin, nose and forehead.. but it has moved to my cheeks, and sometimes around my hairline, near my ears... and it is causing scars. They are almost always so deep that they never surface and can last 2-3 weeks.. sometimes they swell up so big my face looks deformed. I hate it. So needless to say, I'm sick of spending money trying countless products that haven't been working. I'm sick of wearing makeup everyday to cover up scars and waking up with whiteheads. I went to my doctor in tears and told her I wasn't leaving without a referral to a dermatologist.. which she agreed. In Canada you usually have to wait 4-5 months for an appointment, but I ended up going to a clinic in Toronto that accepts walk-ins with a referral. Advantderm. It's a great place. So I went there, and told this story to the derm, who agreed it was time for me to use accutane. I did the necessary bloodwork, waited, and now here I am- day 2 of accutane! I'll be posting progress pictures as often as I can, I'm going to aim for weekly- maybe 2/week. I'm on 40mg daily, and have stopped all other treatments. I'm using cetaphil as a cleanser, witch hazel as a toner, and a tinted moisturizer from elizabeth arden.. I know my skin is going to dry out so I'll be looking into a new moisturizer. Anyone tried silica lotion? It's one of few that I haven't tried Also, a note about the 'regime' on this site- I haven't tried it. I am not routine enough to stick to such a rigid program. Can't think of anything else to say.... I'm not wearing any make-up in these pictures (yikes!) Thanks for reading, and wish me luck!
