4 years after Accutane WITH pics!

I finished accutane FOUR years ago, at the age of 16. I am now approaching my 20th birthday, and I am proud to say that my life has been forever changed. In fact, I completely forgot about this blog until a few days ago. My past life is totally and completely behind me. When I read through those journal entries I posted during my sophomore year in high school, the memories of my horrible cystic acne came back and I honestly felt grateful for the experience to go through something so humbling, patiently endure a long and messy healing, and then come out free. Yes, I still get zits. I usually get about 3 a week, but they are small and they heal quickly and they are NOTHING like what I used to experience. My scarring is completely gone. I have beautiful skin, and I am grateful every day for it. I feel so confident. I can look in mirrors, smile for pictures, look people in the eye without feeling uncomfortable, and touch my face throughout the day. It is a wonderful life! The only memory I have of my teenage battle with cystic and stubborn acne is the scar on my right jawline. It's big. It's noticeable. And it's not going anywhere, unfortunately. Maybe one day I'll see if I can get it removed. But in the meantime, I honestly don't think about it. It doesn't affect my life at all.
I am SO grateful for accutane!! I took the pills religiously for fourteen months, most of which I was prescribed a high dosage. I continued to take pills occasionally for the next six months. My journey was a lot longer than most, and my Initial Breakout (IB) lasted a lot longer than most of the blogs I followed. But I stuck with it, and here I am today completely recovered!
I have been married for six months to the sweetest man on earth, who claims he'd love me just the same, even if I still had a cystic face.  Haha but I'm so happy I get to "put my best face forward" for him.
As far as long term side effects, I don't think I have any. My joints crack quite a bit still, but it's also something that runs in the family. I don't think it's necessarily all due to accutane. I have no dryness. I am oiler than I was when I was on accutane, but not as oily as I was before.
Deciding to take accutane is a personal decision that I don't want to make for you. It is a powerful drug. For me, it worked miracles.

I Started Accutane 22 Months Ago

22 months ago, I was 14 years old, and I started taking accuane. I took a few pills a week, and gradually took more and more. I never officially ended Accutane. My doctor never told me, "All right, that's it, you're done!" My last appointment was over 6 months ago. I still have some pills left, I take a couple every month. So how's my skin doing? It's amazing! I never thought that my skin could be so clear. I still break out. But honestly, I hardly notice it. I usually have a small blemish or two on my skin every day, but they are tiny and unnoticeable. They heal quickly. They aren't cystic. They are usually just tiny pink bumps. It's rare that I can even pop them. It feels so wonderful to have clear skin. It has changed my life SO much. I'm a totally different person. I'm confident, I can have fun, I can TOUCH my face, I can look in mirrors without being depressed for several days. I used to avoid all mirrors. They were one of my biggest fears. Now, I can easily look in mirrors. It's amazing! My skin still isn't perfect. It gets red really easily, but that's not because of the Accutane. I've always had really red, sensitive skin. I hate it, but I can deal with it. I have a really bad scar on my right jaw. It's a big pink lump from a bad cystic breakout I had a few months into my Accutane journey. I'm living with it though, and although I wish it were gone, I can accept it. I used to have really bad discoloring and scarring on my cheeks, but those have healed. I used to have this crescent shaped area under my eye. Under my eye was clear, white skin, and then there was a sharp crescent line where the scarring was. It's gotten a lot better now, and although the skin still isn't perfect, it looks pretty normal, especially with makeup. I love makeup. Anyway, the only permanent side effects I've noticed is the cracking of my joints, but I don't mind. It's not painful, and it's kind of cool, honestly. My skin used to be really oily, before I took Accutane. However, now it's just a little oily. I get a slight shine on my forehead and nose, but it's not too bad. I used to have to rub my face against something to wipe off the grease, but not anymore! Accutane is amazing. I cannot express my gratitude enough. My skin is SAVED! I no longer consider myself a girl with acne. I'm just a girl with an occasional zit, and I'm totally okay with that. I started getting acne when I was 8 years old, and I had to start wearing makeup when I was 10. The acne got pretty bad when I was 11, I had at least 5 zits everyday. When I was 13, it got really out of control. It was cystic. When I was fourteen, the acne was only getting worse, and other medications and surgeries weren't working at all- so I started Accutane. My skin had a horrible initial breakout. A couple if months after I started, I turned 15. On my fifteenth birthday, my skin had never looked worse. I was covered in cysts, dry patches, oil, pustules, blackheads, and pink bumps. It was the worst birthday ever. I'm so glad that stage of my life is over, it was almost unbearable. Accutane saved me, I hope it can save you!

Day 418 Accutane

Okay everyone, I know it's been a long time. I've been really busy, and since my skin has been so great, it's not always the first thing on my mind like it used to be. But let's back up. Around the middle of May, my doctor told me to take three 40mg pills a week. I couldn't, because I broke out a bit. (Just a few small pimples). So I went back to taking pills every day. At my last appointment, a little over a month ago, he told me to go down. I have! I haven't been taking them in any certain order lately. I've been gone for a while and it's hard to remember, or to even find the pills in my suitcase. Anyway, I've had a few small pimples but they go away quickly. It's been great! I have another appointment in a few days, so he might bump my dosage down more. I can still shower every other day and not have greasy hair, unlike how I was before accutane. My skin isn't dry, but it's not very oily. It's a nice balance, I really like it. My joints are fine, everything is going great. The best news is that my red marks are healing! The lines between perfect skin and scarred skin under my eyes is hardly there! My cheeks look so much better. The scarring is so slight, it only looks like an uneven skin tone. My only major scarring left is the big mark on my right jaw, but I figure that I'll have that one for many more years, so I have learned to accept it. It is fading a bit, though. Anyway, life is going so great because of my lovely skin, and I couldn't be more grateful towards accutane. Try it!

Day 355

For some reason, within the past 2 weeks, I've been breaking out. I've had a couple of small pustules on my forehead, and some pink bumps on my cheeks. Weird. I'm still taking 40mg a day, so I don't know why. Anyway, my red marks are healing SO well! Although the line between clear skin under my eyes and the line of red marks is still visible, it's much lighter. I've been putting apple cider vinegar on my face for the past couple months and it's working really well. The huge scar on my right jaw still looks pretty bad, in fact it's getting worse. It's raised and red ugly looking, but I don't mind. At least it's on the side of my face. Anyway, good luck to everyone else!

Day 322 Accutane

I had another appointment, but my doctor left my dosage the same. 40 mgs every day. Anyway, I haven't been as faithful with taking the pills the past few weeks and it's shown. I broke out a little but on the left side of my face and I'm a little splotchy. However, my red marks seem to have faded a bit. My arms are really dry and rough right now. I got a small burn on my arms last week when I was in the sun for 20 minutes. Anyway, hopefully I'll be off soon! Will my red marks heal better when on accutane or off?

Day 300

Happy 300th day of accutane! Wow. Is this normal? Anyway, all week I've been getting random little red bumps on my skin. It's not terribly noticeable or bad, and I don't really mind, but I find it odd. Also, my red marks seem to have faded a tiny bit, and my overall redness has sort of decreased. My lips aren't too dry, and my skin isn't dry at all. Actually, my arms are kind of dry, but who really cares? Okay... That's all!

Day 293 Accutane

This week I got a small pimple on my forehead and chin. That's it! My red marks are fading slightly and the redness has calmed down a tiny bit. I'm hardly dry, and my back rarely hurts. I guess I'm used to accutane. I'm still taking 40mg a day. Good luck to everyone!

Day 286

Guess who broke out this week? Me! It was pathetic compared to the breakouts I used to get, in fact a year ago I wouldn't have even considered this a breakout. Nevertheless, I'm on my tenth month of accutane and breaking out is ridiculous. First of all, I got several small pink/ red bumps along the right side of my face. They aren't drastic and they don't call attention to themselves, but they are there. The weird thing is that I got a big pustule (haven't had one of those in a long time!) above my lip on the right side. I attempted to pop it and today it's a bright red, small bump. Who knows what it'll do. The good news is that my red marks are slowly fading away. They're definitely there, but it's insane how less noticeable compared to how they looked in the fall. I might try putting lemon juice on them to lighten them.

Day 275 Accutane

This week my skin's been acting weird. It's been brutally red, as always. It's ridiculous how much anti-redness products I use just to see my face still be fluorescent red! The weird thing with my skin is that it's been sort of breaking out. Very minimally. In fact I hate to even call it breaking out. Here's the case: I'm getting random reddish/ pink bumps on my face. I've gotten a couple on my forehead and a few on my right cheek. They're hardly noticeable, but it's just weird because I haven't broken out in over a month. Anyway, my red marks haven't faded at all this week. In fact, it looks like they're coming back! The crescent shaped area under my eyes seems more prominent. Yay....

Day 272

Hey everyone! So here I am on month nine taking 40mg a day. My red marks have faded significantly. I was looking at pics from a year ago and I couldn't believe my skin was that bad! I've been remembering my skin in the fall. It was covered in dark red marks. Now the crescent area under my left eye is gone. The whole cheek is full of light & fading redmarks. There are a few small splotches but the rest just looks like uneven skin tone. Under my right eye, the crescent area is really light. The rest of the cheek is just full of light splotchy reddish/pink marks. I still have a dark splotch on my jawline from a cyst I had a year or so ago. Anyway, side effects: I am hardly dry. Although I can go longer without showering and my skin hardly looks shiny, I don't feel very dry. My lips are decent and my skin isn't flaky or peely. My back is doing fine. The worst side effect for me is the redness. It hasn't been too bad tis week, but I'm still pretty red. Makeup or anti redness lotions & primers hardly help. So this week I got a couple of tiny pink bumps on my right cheek and a couple of pink bumps on my forehead. They're tiny, practically not there, and fast healing. I don't mind them. Gotta love accutane:) Good luck to everyone!

Day 265

Annoyingly, I'm getting oilier. My skin has some shine and my hair gets oilier faster. My lips are fine, I'm on top of moisturizing them. So this week I've noticed a slight decrease on the appearance of red marks. Great! However, I'm still really red. It's worse on some days, and I can't seem to pick up a pattern. So this week I've gotten a small red bump on my forehead, under my left eye, on the right side of my face, and above my lip on my right cheek. I'm guessing it's because of the dosage decrease. My acne must be really persistent! Anyway, things are looking pretty good but there's definitely room for improvement. Good luck everyone!

Day 258

Day 258 I went down on my dosage! Noe I'm only taking one 40 mg pill a day. I can already feel myself getting a little oilier. My skin is doing great though! I haven't gotten a pustule in a month. The only acne I've gotten in the past month would be a few red bumps that heal quickly. My scars are still fading slightly. My derm told me my redness would go down a ton after I'm off accutane. He better be right, because I'm soooo red all the time. No amount of soothing lotion or green makeup helps. I'm not very dry. I shower every other day and I'm not perky or flaky. My lips aren't terribly dry either. I'm loving my clear skin!

Day 247

Good news everyone- I stopped taking accutane for like 5 days be because I was taking all of this other medication for something else. ANDDDD.... I didn't break out at all! In fact, I have only have a couple of tiny little bumps on the side of my face:) YES! I'm gaining confidence that once I'm done with my course, it will never come back. That would be nice, because I LOVE clear skin, and I could never go back to the numerous cysts and pustules and nodules I woke up to every morning. I. Love. Accutane. However. I have been trying to ignore this small little detail for a while, because it's been minimal. But I probably should point out.. I'm losing a lot of hair. But it's totally fine by me, because it looks fine. A little thinner, but otherwise the same as before accutane. The amount of hair I lose everytime I take a shower is disgusting. But hey, if that's what it takes- then I LOVE thin hair. Anyway, just thought I'd pump up all of you out there who are just starting accutane- clear skin will take its time. But it will COME, and it will be wonderful!!

Day 237

My skin is looking great! The only acne I got this week was a couple of stubborn pustules below my right corner lip. It healed quite nicely though and didn't leave any red marks. Anyway, I'm not loving these red marks. At all. I don't know what I was talking about last week when I said I could barely see them with makeup. I mean, it's definitely not as bad as it was a few months ago, but its still pretty bad. Also, the huge raised scar on my right jawline is getting more raised and it's definitely not getting any lighter. How long will it take for these red marks to go away?! Side effects: surprisingly not that dry. My lips aren't too bad, my skin has a hint of oil at the end of the day, and my scratchy/dry/minimally rashy arms are healed and I didn't put any lotion on them. I can't even remember how much oil I produced on my skin before accutane. I'm scared, because I'm sure it wasn't pretty. Good luck to everyone! I hope it doesn't take you 8 months to clear up:)

Day 230

I'm in love with accutane. Seriously, it's changed me. I look great now! When I wear makeup, my skin is porcelain and smooth and gorgeous. It's still red sometimes and I have lots of red marks but who really cares, this week I got a couple of red bumps on my upper right jawline. Today I have a small pustule below my lip. And that's IT! Two pathetic little blemishes in a week. It's wonderful. The dryness is minimal, no crazy side effects, and I don't have to shower everyday. It's soooo fun! I took a ton of pictures this week & my skin looked amazing! Good luck to Everyonr out there.

Day 223

Guess whose skin is looking amazing? MINE! Basically the only pimples I got were a few pink bumps on the left side of my face and a small zit by under the corner of my lip on the left side. It's amazing. I've noticed how much my red marks have healed since October. Then, I wore high coverage makeup, but there was still a dark distinctive line under my eyes where I was white, and then purplish and red and swollen. But now I can wear makeup with less coverage and look almost normal. It's amazing! This week I had an appointment. He kept my dosage the same and told me I was getting there. Um, yeah I am! I've been on this for almost eight months. Anyway, here's to hoping I will never have a severe breakout again, and that my red marks will be completely gone by summer.

Day 216

Everythings going great! No major breakouts since the last time I posted. The only acne I have right now is a healing pustule under my nose, a small red bump my the corner of my left lip. That's it! It's quite amazing. Red marks are fading. I look pretty good with makeup! My skin still flushes occasionally, but it's not too bad. I'm dry, but it's the good kind of dry. I don't have oily skin and I can go several days without showering. My lips aren't too bad, I keep up with petroleum jelly and baby lips. My back doesn't even seem to bother me as much! I'm healing much faster too. A couple of weeks ago I had a HUGE pustule on my cheek. It was red and swollen and disgusting. It was completely gone, red marks and all, in four days! # of consecutive days without acne: 3. New Years Resolution: Have flawless skin by June.

Day 202

My back cracks a lot and makes weird sounds. So does my neck and knees. Hope it doesn't kill me. Forehead: clear. Oil free. No red marks. Beautiful. Nose: peeled all week. Made me look like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Scan thing on the right side. Could just be dry skin. Just pink today, less peely. Chin: acne free. Couple of pink circles that peel a bit. Slight remarks. Under chin: fading red marks. No acne. Right jawline: weird red mark is still raised but less prominent. Clear. Left jawline: no acne. Tiny red marks, hardly noticeable. Gorgeous. Right cheek: big red peely healing pimple by my nose. Calming down. It's been pussy, red and sore all week. Ew. Red all around it. Sunglasses mark still sharp, but lighter. Red marks are healing a little bit. Left cheek: weird thing on my upper cheek. Looked like a flake of skin, but I popped it. It scanned up, but now it's healing. Red marks doing a bit better. I need to stop picking my skin. Hair: dry. Eyes: dry. Lips: dry. Hands: dry. # of consecutive days without any new acne: 1. Merry Christmas!

Day 199

My face is EXPLODING!! Ridiculous!! I'm on month seven of accutane, and I look disgusting. Luckily, my forehead is clear. My left cheek/jawline is clear except for my upper cheek, under the eye. I have two HUGE pimples. They were pustules last night, and now they are bright pink blobs. Next to my nose on my right cheek I have a cluster of pimples that kept popping up. Then it formed into one huge pussy sore pustule, then I popped it and it left a weird hole. Then it came back, pussy and peely and red and swollen. It's repulsive. My nose has peeled really bad and left behind bright red skin. My chin has been breaking out all week. Today there are two huge cyst-like pimples on each side of the chin. Plus, the huge scar on my right jawline is raised, like it's going to pop up into a fiery red huge cyst. Also under my chin is starting to feel bumpy again, like it's ready to release another horrible breakout. I am SO disappointed in my skin. It was doing SO great, I thought it would never break out again this bad ever again. I am red and splotchy and dry and pussy and ugly. Ew. To top it all off, my hands have small rashes and my lips are peeling like it's the end of the world. My joints crack when I move around. I am going to start taking my prednisone tonight. I need it REALLY bad. Hope no scarring!!

Day 188

I had an appointment with the derm this week. He kept my dosage the same and added another three week course of prednisone, which I'll start next week. Anyway, my skin is looking GREAT for my standards, but not so great for people with normal skin. My forehead had a huge red pimple on my forehead on a couple of days ago, but it's healing and will be gone in a couple days I think. My chin has cleared up wonderfully!! However I do have a persistent one below the right side of my lip. Under my chin is looking great, the deep zit on the edge of my chin is almost healed. I had a painful pimple in my ear lobe yesterday... Random. I have a couple of little bumps under my left eye that I always thought were redmarks, but I'm not so sure anymore.... Anyway my left side is otherwise completely clear. Unfortunately, on my right cheek by my nose I have a deep red pimple that will take about a week to heal. It's pretty bad, I might even consider it a small cyst. other than that my right side is clear. The peeely mark by my right eye hasn't peeled in a few days, and it's pink, not red! My nose hasn't peeled in a few days either! And that horrible persistent spot by my right eyebrow is history! It's lovely. Anyway, red marks: left side has healed a bit, it looks very nice with makeup. Right side is slowly healing, but it still has a long way to go. I had splotchy red marks under my chin, on my right jawline, and on my upper right neck, but they are healing beautifully! Looks great with makeup on. Anyway, I'm going to start counting the number of consecutive number of days I have without any NEW acne. # of days: 1 Also I have a question: if it takes me longer to clear up on accutane, does that increase or decrease my chances of relapsing afterwards?? Because I'm on my seventh month of accutane and I am still getting acne everyday... Although, it's getting better!

Day 181

Skin Status: Forehead is clear, nose is painfully peeling, deep pimple on the edge of my right eyebrow, edge of chin heeling, cheeks and jawlines clear... My skin is kinda oily. My back is more sore. My arms/hands are super dry and minimally scaly. Lips are dry but not too bad. Oh yeah, my chin has a couple of deep pimples (one on each side) that have been there forever. They are drying now, and they are just pink peely circles. Redmarks: I think they've healed a bit this week. They are a tad less prominent. The huge mark on my right jawline is healing waaaay faster than I thought it would! Overall skin color is red. Ew.

Day 174 Accutane

This week my skin looked pretty bad, but today it looks pretty nice! My forehead is clear except for one small pink thing. Also the peely spot by my eyebrow hasn't peeled in a few days! My nose hasn't peeled in a few days either. My chin was DECREPIT this week. I had a huge cyst thing and several large pimples. Now they are just dry spots. On the edge of my chin I have a couple of bumps that will most likely stay for another week. I have random pustules by my lips. Under my left eye I had a small but deep pimple, but now I really don't know what it is. The huge pustule on my right cheek by my nose is slowly healing, right now it's a red perky patch. The horrible disgusting bright red atrocious peeling thing by my right eye CAME BACK. EW! It looks hor-ib-le! Anyway, my red marks haven't healed at all as far as I've noticed. I put acv on them every night. Ugh. My skin is still red and flushy (but not as bad) and super dry yet still a bit oily. My back is still a bit sore, my arms and hands get red and scaly randomly.... Overall, my skin looks So. Much. Better. Okay, here's to hoping this week will bring me less red skin, fast healing red marks, and the disappearance of the horrible red skin patch by my right eye.

Day 167

I have a burning rash on my arms! It's red and bumpy and dry and PAINFUL! it hurts to put moisturizer on it. But it's been healing. Unfortunately, my skin has been doing a lot worse lately. I have a big pimple under my right eye that's been there for a while. It's red all around it. My chin has a cluster of pimples, and several other pustules. It breaks out with new ones every morning! my breakouts by my ears have cleared up. Under my chin is pretty clear, although there are STILL some under the skin bumps. My forehead isn't flawless, but it's pretty much okay. The peely red mark by my right eye is 90% gone! Thank goodness, it looked terrible! The peely spot by my eyebrow is still bad. It's better on some days. On a bad day, it leaves a huge red raw mark. My nose keeps peeling too. It's just covered in dark red marks. Pretty. My cheeks are clear, so are my jawlines. Hopefully my chin will clear up! My face is still red and flushing. I can handle it, but it's soooooooo annoying. Also I walked a couple of miles on Monday and Tuesday and it made me really really really sore. Weird. My lips don't seem as dry, and my skin is still a little oily. My red marks are the same as last week. okay that's about it!

Day 160

I'm doing fabulous! Fantastic! Month 6 is going beautifully. My forehead had s small white head this morning. Other than that it's perfectly clear and smooth! Well, except for the spot by my eyebrow that will not stop peeling and leaves red, raw skin. But whatever. My nose is clear and smooth! It hasn't peeled in a couple days. And there's not a single blackhead! The areas by my eyes that were once covered in cysts that would randomly pop and bleed and scab are now 100% acne free! My left cheek is also 100% acne free and incredibly smooth! I can't even believe it. It's been covered in cysts and pustules since I was twelve years old! I have a small scabby pimple at the bottom of my ear though. My jawline is also perfectly clear. My upper lip is completely acne free. I have a small scabby pimple on my chin and a weird flat one that keeps peeling (both on the left sides) my right chin has a couple of small flattish pimples that peel. Under my chin is clear and smooth and soft! there are several tiny tiny dry bumps in the edge of my chin though. My right cheek is 99% acne free, there is this annoying spot that keeps peeling, but I don't think it's a pimple. I have a couple dry scabby zits by my right ear too. My right jawline is beautifully clear and smooth, although there is one under the skin bump. Okay, red marks: forehead: 95% free of red marks. It's gorgeous! My sunglasses mark on my right side (the worse side) is doing better! I think it's improved a lot in the past week. I still put acv on it every night. My whole upper cheek is pretty red and splotchy, but the lower half is 80% free of red marks! I had horrible red marks in my upper right neck, but they have faded a LOT!! you can barely see them now. I still have a pretty bad mark on my jaw that will take a long time to heal. It's hard to tell If my chin has red marks or not. It might just be uneven skin tone and peely skin. Who knows. My sunglasses mark on my right cheek is.... Decent. It hasn't improved much, but it wasn't as bad as the right cheek to begin with. My skin could actually look good.... If it wasn't so red! I can't even apply enough makeup to cover the redness. So annoying. I keep flushing too! Weird thing: my skin is getting a little bit oily again! My nose has slight shine, and I can feel my skin get oily during the day. Not enough to shine though. I like it like that though. My hair is dry.... Eyes kinda dry... My lips are dry but they hold moisture better now. Back still hurts when I bend down... That's it! I <3 accutane! (and Prednisone)
