So, nearly 5 months since I came off Accutane and my skin has never been better. Whilst I was on accutane my Dad would take weekly pictures of my back to see the progression I was making on the drug. I looked at them recently and it's scary to think I'd nearly forgotten just how bad it was. I mean at it's worst I struggled to put a t-shirt on for school in the mornings, and struggled to sleep lying on my back because it was just so painful. But now being spot free for the last 3 or so months, life in general has improved drastically. I am reluctant to recommend this drug to anyone because it is so potentially dangerous, but I would recommend to ANYONE talking to their doctor about getting on it; because it's just a miracle drug. I still have very faint marks on my back, but they just don't bother me they are so so faint I can barely see them. I'm sure they'll go soon though. Anyway I probably won't post on here for another few months, but good luck to anyone going on it and if anyone has any questions on my experience on the drug, advice etc just drop a comment bellow. (:
It's been a while since I last posted and it's been a while since I took my last Accutane pill...
As far as results go, the improvements to my skin are incredible. I haven't had a spot anywhere on my body in at least a month! The marks from my previous ones are still there though but are continuing to fade. They are barely noticeable (: Last week I went on holiday with my family and I brought a friend and it was the first time that I went swimming without a top on in years, and it felt great not having to worry about what people though of my back! I mean you can still see it, but not really, only if you look hard. I expect my back will be completely clear by the end of the year, fingers crossed! (:
As far as side effects go incase I didn't mention previously, I suffered from really dry, peeled lips whilst on the drug and really dry skin. They went very quickly; within the week of coming off them which was fantastic. My whole skin in general has been incredible. My skin on my face was never that bad at all, but since being on the drug and coming off it, my skin on my face is so smooth, and I've had multiple compliments about how good my skin looks from a bunch of people, and I never thought I would be the person getting compliments on my skin!
I am so happy with the results from this drug and I am looking forward to seeing the ongoing improvements that hopefully lay ahead of me!
Good Luck to anyone who's struggling with severe acne, I know exactly what you're going through, trust me (:
Last time I posted it was the day before I was due to see my Dermatoligist.
To my delight and surprise, that day he thought it was time for me to come off Accutane. So I have been off Accutane since Tuesday the 16th of August. My side effects (my dry lips and skin) were non existent within a week which was good. Since I have been off Accutane my back has just carried on improving I would say over-all my back acne has gone from a 9/10 severity to 2/10 right now, and it's still improving. I am very happy with my results so far from Accutane and I am looking forward to my ongoing improvement!
I will post in about a month or two to say if I have carried on improving or not. To anyone who has severe acne and their dermatologist deems it appropriate that they go on this drug, i thoroughly recommend it, but bare in mind, that it is an extremely serious, strong drug.
Good Luck to everyone.
It is Monday evening on the 15th of August 2011.
I had my blood test today after coming back from South America (a fantastic trip btw) and I have an appointment with my dermatologist tomorrow. Not long to go now only a few more weeks! Since being on the 20mg dose due to being away my side effects have improved a lot regarding my lips. They are basically fine, a little red on the corner of my left side but apart from that they are now fine! However I do expect tomorrow to be put back on a higher dose for the remaining weeks. My acne has improved a fair bit actually on my back, still very much there but no where near as angry as it once was. I would give it a 4/10 now on my back when at it's worse looking back at the pictures and my memories I would say it was at a 9/10...So it's still got a way to go but nothing like what it once was. I can remember not being able to turn my neck because it hurt so much and even sometimes it being incredibly painful to put on a shirt...hopefully those days are long gone. The acne on my neck has vastly improved too, I saw some pictures of me which were taken six months ago and the improvement is vast! I don't have acne on my neck anymore just faint purple marks which will hopefully fade in time. Well hopefully I have had my last blood test on this and this will be the last appointment I will need to be prescribed, but then again you never know...
It's Tuesday 12th of July
Just came back from an appointment with my dermatoligist...He is happy with the improvment, but due to my side effects (Really bad lips, peeling hands and sores between my foot nails and my hand nails) He has dropped the dose so I only take 40mg instead of 50mg. I don't mind that's fine with me. He is happy with my improvement he says I am coming along a lot and should be done within eight weeks (hence why the title has changed to 20 weeks instead of 19 weeks because he's added a week onto his last prediction, which I suppose is just fine.
The right and centre side of my back is clearing up pretty well to be honest however the left side is still pretty angry but it's starting to settle down. My lips have been really bad but about a week ago my mum bought me a new thing other than vaseline which didn't seem to be doing anything, but this new thing which is in a pocket size orange container. (link bellow)
Anyway my sores on my feet and fingers are really troublesome and my derm prescribed me some anti-biotics which should clear them up (:
I go to South America, to be precise Equador to visit the Amazon Forest, The Andes and then the Galapagos Islands on a school trip and I am leaving on Sunday, that should be good. Whilst I'm out there my derm says to only take 20mg a day due to minimizing the risks of my side effects affecting me. Anyway next time I blog I would've been on the trip and be back and as it would be four weeks from now roughly hopefully there will be vast improvements to my back!
It is Monday the 4th of July 2011
I am really tired and feel ill, I've been playing tennis for the last 6 days and especially today I think the sun caught me a bit and I feel really light headed and I threw up earlier, not good. Anyway, accutane, yes, my lips are still really bad and it's really pissing me off now it's so frustrating no matter what I do they do not improve :/ The inside of my nose has been mildly irritating me over the last few days, I hop that goes soon. My back on the left side is still really bad but the middle and the right side of my back has improved a fair bit. It is very frustrating that the left side is still so bad! Oh well summer holidays starts soon and I'm off to South America for 3 weeks from the 17th of July so that should be good. HOPEFULLY by the end of the summer the majority of this is gone, but in all honesty I highly doubt that will be the case...
It's Monday the 27th of June 2011.
My back has been angry the last week, well, not ridiculous but definitely angry. However I think it may be a good thing (fingers crossed!) as I only have about 7 angry ones on my back and the marks around them where my REALLY bad acne used to be have faded a lot so once these angry ones heal, hopefully it will appear better. It is still a very slow, draining process but I am over half way there now! I am on a 50mg dose but the tablets only come in 20mg so I take 60mg one day and the next 40mg, however as easy as it may sound I sometimes forget whether the day before I took 3 or 2 tablets haha .
I have school now but yeah that's my update...
It is Sunday the 19th of June 2011.
At the start of the week my back began to flare up a bit nothing major just got a bit more angry than usual. There isn't much to say about this week, the top left side of my arm is clearing up nicely, slowly but it's getting there, I would say there has been no real improvement over this week to be honest but there you go, it's a slow process. I had my 3rd blood test whilst on this the other day and my blood was all clear. I'm still on 50mg a day. Not much else to say...
It is Sunday the 12th of June 2011. I am nearing the half-way mark on this course. So far the only side effects I have suffered from have been the dry lips (although they are pretty much fine now) and my hip joints start to ache after a lot of exercise and then I am stiff for a couple of days after. It doesn't help that I am quite sporty. Finally I suffer from mild dry skin on my face and arms whihc is easily sorted out by moisturizer. I am happy with the lack of side effects I have suffered from. I would say on day one of my accutane course, the severity of my acne went as follows:
My back was an 8/10 ---> Now 5.5/10
My right side of my neck 3/10 ---> Now 0.5/10
My left side of my neck 4/10 ---> Now 1/10
My chest 4/10 ---> Now 1/10
My face 1.5/10 ---> Now 0/10
I am happy with the progress so far. Hopefully it will carry on improving with minimal side effects. Bring on week 9!
It is Sunday 5th June 2011 and I am nearly 50 days into taking accutane.
Side Effects: I am now about to start my seventh week on it and the only side effects I have had is dry skin and dry lips. The corners of my lips cracked for the first time a couple of days ago and it hurts quite a bit, I have been piling on the vaseline! Also I am quite sporty so when I play for over an hour my hip joints start to ache and that happened the other day :/. I apply moisturizer fairly frequently to my face and upper arms but if I am honest I don't do it as often as I should as it is such an effort. When I first went on accutane I was told that I wouldn't need to apple other things to counter my acne as the accutane itself was drying out my skin so much it would not be a good idea to let other products to interfere. So I thought, brilliant, I do not have to apply different products to myself 2-4 times a day finally, but the reality is I just have to apple moisturizer and vaseline ALL the time :/ Ah well there you go, at least my side effects so far are only minor and touch wood it stays thats way.
My Acne: When my acne on my back was at its worse I said it was an 8 or 8.5 out of 10 severity wise. Now I would say it is a 6.5/10. It is a slow burn this accutane but hopefully it clears it all up, I do not mind suffering these side effects providing the outcome in the end for me is very good. Around my right side of my neck I would say it was a 1.5/10 and the left side a 2.5/10... I still have purple patches over my back and neck where previous clusters of spots were which won't seem to budge! Anyway onwards and upwards I am predicted to finish my course on the 30th of August 2011 so that is in 12 weeks and 2 days (86 days). Providing my Dermatologist's prediction to finish on August the 30th I am 49 days out of 136 days in which is 36% through my course. Still a long way to go. (:
It is Sunday the 22nd of May 2011 and I have now passed a month of being on Accutane. I would say so far the results on my neck have been very good, but my back the most severe part still hasn't changed and is still really bad. On Tuesday the 17th of May 2011 I had an appointment with my Dermatologist and he has put up my dose from 20mg a day to 40mg every other day and 60mg every other day (He wanted to put me on 50mg but the pills don't come in 10mg sizes so for example I take 40mg on Monday and then 60mg on Tuesday and 40mg on Wednesday and 60mg on Thursday etc etc. I am expecting to see an improvement within the next month (so after I have been on Accutane for 2 months) but we will se what happens. As side effects go I am still just suffering with my lips being very dry and peeling and my face and arms are mildly dry. I moisturize twice a day to combat the dryness. Other than that my eyes recently have been stinging a tiny bit which is a little uncomfortable but there you go. On Tuesday my Dermatologist said that he expects me to be on this drug for another 14 weeks (so if he were to be correct that would mean I finish on August the 30th 2011). I would say the severity of my acne on my back is at a 7.5/10 but we'll see what happens.
It is Monday 16th May 2011, (Las entry it was the 9th of May I accidently put 22nd as it was the 22nd pill) and I have just taken my 29th pill. My acne is steadily improving I would say it is on a 7/10 at the moment but it is improving. I have had no serious break outs really since being on this and touch wood I do not get any in the future. I am seeing my Dermatologist tomorrow so he can see how I am getting on. I had a blood test a few days ago as anyone on this will know you need to be checked monthly that the drug isn't harming your internal organs or whatever. As far as symptoms go it's same old same old just dry lips and dry skin but nothing too dramatic to be honest and touch wood it doesn't get any worse. I am please with the progress so far it is the first thing that has actually looked like it is improving my skin.
It is Monday 22nd May 2011. My lips are still very cry so it seems I am always applying vaseline to my lips. My skin is fairly dry on my face but easily treated with moisturizer. I have noticed my arms are getting very dry, I should apple some moisturizer. The right side of my neck has improved dramatically as has my left side. On a scale of 1-10 the severity of my acne on my right side of my neck is a 1.5/10 and the left a 2/10. My chest is steadily getting smoother and my back has gone from a 8/10 severity to maybe a 7. Taking my blood test on Wednesday and I have an appointment on the 17th. The long slow process continues!
It is Monday 2nd of May 2011 and I have just taken my 15th pill. A couple of days ago my lips were seriously getting extremely painful and I used to put on vaseline and it didn't seem to help. However, my friend told me not to lick my lips and just leave them to dry or dry them and then apply the vaseline and it has really helped. I am no longer in any pain just apply vaseline about 8 times a days which is okay, it is just in my pocket all day . Apart from that I haven't really have any side effects apart from a tiny bit of dry skin on my nose and chin which goes away after applying moisturizer. The right side of my neck has really improved the left side is getting there. My chest is steadily improving. My back (where the main problem is) there isn't too much change if there is any it is a bit better, getting dry. To be honest I am not too bothered about the lips it shows it's in my system. I am not expecting to see any serious improvements for AT LEAST a month, but we'll see what happens. Oh and my back is a bit sore but nothing too major.
Today is Tuesday 26th April 2011, I would say my skin has improved just a tiny bit but I doubt noticeable to anyone else and I do not think it is due to the medication I just think I may be going through a good faze to be honest. My side effects so far have been very mild. My skin has been a little bit dry but nothing which couldn't be sorted with a bit of moisturizer and same goes with my lips.
I am not expecting to see any real improvements for at least two months which will be mid June...
Just taken my 6th tablet on April 23rd 2011. This morning I had some dry skin around my chin and between my nose and my upper lip... that was sorted out by a bit of moisturizer. Other than that I haven't suffered from any side effects... still no improvement though... obviously
It is Friday 22nd April 2011 and I have just taken my 5th pill. Obviously no improvement so far as expected but no outbreaks either. I have yet to suffer from any side effects which is really good! Fingers crossed when I do they won't be too severe!
My Accutane Blog
I am 15 years old and I have been suffering from severe acne for about three years now on my back. Prior to visiting my dermatologist in January I had been prescribed some antibiotics by my GP along with a cream which really didn't do anything. I took them and applied the cream for over a year. So in January 2011 my parents and I asked my GP to refer me to my dermatologist. After a blood test to check I was able to be prescribed the drug it came to the moment when I would finally begin my journey to beating acne. I took my first accutane pill on Monday 18th April 2011 and now it is the 20th April 2011. I am yet to have any side effects. Hopefully I don't suffer to much from this, but this is the last option so fingers crossed it clears my acne!
