So tomorrow marks one week after I did my TCA peel. My face never peeled very much; by the 4th and 5th day the peeling on my chin moved to just the lower area of my left cheek and the peeling on my nose moved up the bridge but that was about it. I'm so happy to be able to ware makeup again tomorrow as the peeling has completely stopped.
I'm guessing the peel wasn't strong enough to do very much so in another week or 2 i'll do a second peel at 15%. I'll also post before/after pick as well on this thread: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php/topic/304504-my-first-tca-peel/
I'll also report any change in my scars (they are not very noticeable in pics)
So it's the morning of day 3 and my skin is looking pretty good. My chin started peeling yesterday but no other peeling than that so far; it will probably pick up tomorrow. My scars still seem filled in so now I'm guessing this is the layer of dead skin over top? not sure but it has to be a good sign My PIH is still there and am hoping it will fade as my skin flakes off..
I'll update at the one week mark!
So I've been clear of acne but I'm still left with my scars and PIH. I've started doing glycolic peels again for about 4 weeks now and havn't really seen results, so yesterday I did my first TCA peel.
I got makeupartistschoice.com's 30% peel and diluted it to 10%. The peel stung a bit but nothing too uncomfortable, and I left it on for about 3 minutes. There wasn't any frosting but it's my first time and I didn't want to do a second layer or a stronger peel and risk causing more damage.
This morning I woke up and my skin looks completely normal, other than it feeling very slightly tight. I don't know if I can attribute this to the peel since it hasn't even been 24 hrs but I;m telling you my skin looks amazing! My PIH is lightened and my scars look more shallow. I'm guessing that this is the result of maybe a bit of post peel swelling and could go back in a day or 2 but this makes me excited regardless, and am hoping this is foreshadowing of good things to come
So it has been almost 4 months that I have been on spiro and I'm estatic to report that I am 100% clear and have been for a few weeks now (except 1 pimple I did get about a week ago, but only because I have been going on vacation a lot this summer and tend to forget to take my pill everyday, though it was gone within days)
Spiro has been a miracle drug for me, I don't need to obsess over daily regimens or have to feel guilty if I forget to wash my face every now and then. I honestly can't remember the last time that I've felt my face and it was totally and utterly smooth and it's seriously an amazing feeling.
So as of now I just make sure to take my spiro every day and in the morning and at night I wash my face with the Arbonne (love their products but its VERY expencive) cleanser/freshener and their new cell exfoliater and then apply biore facial moisturizer.
But, as usual I'm still left with my ever present PIH, though since I've been to the beach a lot this summer I have gotten really tan and it does make my scars less noticable. I don't think I'm going to really attempt to do anything about them until summer is over because the best thing (or really the only thing) that gave me results were the glycolic/kojic acid peels. I'm waiting until the end of the summer mainly because it is summer and I am always outside. Also I love being tan and don't want my face to be 2-3 shades lighter than the rest of me lol.
So seriously, if anyone suspects there is a chance their acne is hormonal (if you tend to break out more durring or right before your periode or if you tend to breakout on your jawline/chin/neck, talk to your dermatologist about getting on spironolacton!! It does take a while before your totally 100% clear but it is seriously worth it! My skin hasnt looked this good since I was probably 13 and I don't have to worry about putting globs of makeup on my face just to leave the house.
So before I thought the spiro was making my acne clear up quicker, but now I'm wondering if it's the emu oil
I had 2 whiteheads earlier today. Both weren't big, but they were more significant than the tiny-dot whiteheads most people get. Well a few hours ago, I settled down to start school work (2 finals and a paper due tomorrow ) and because I didn't feel like totally washing my face yet, I just globed on emu oil on both pimples. About an hour or so later I accidentally touched my cheek and rubbed the emu oil off. So I went to reapply some and realized the white tips of the pimples had gone to about half the size! And an hour and a half or so after that (which was about 15 min ago) I looked in the mirror again out of curiosity and, I kid you not, the white is completely gone. Also the redness is down (there more pinkish), and the overall size of the pimple itself is significantly smaller.
I knew what I was doing lately was working, I've just never witnessed the direct results, and that fast!
Feeling good...well not anymore because I need to stop procrastinating on this cite and get to work. Looking at an all-nighter...
So in the evening yesteerday I noticed 3 new pimples emerging, and sure thing this morning I woke up with 3 new friends on my face, all of them having a whitehead.
I'm so frustrated because I'm trying really hard not to pick and have been doing good, but my pimples pop anyways! Last night, one on my cheek was already a whitehead and it was sooooo close to the surface, it was really hard not to pick it. But, I literally yawned and the stretching of my skin was enough to pop it . Then another one popped this morning as I was washing my face...so frustrating.
But theyre already going away it seems and non of them are inflamed, just a little red so I've deffinitly noticed they go away faster. This excites me because from what I've read, those who are on spiro first noticed their pimples healed quicker before they stopped getting pimples all together. So this is my wishful thinking that the spiro is indeed working its magic and I will soon no longer get pimples and my life will be complete!
But..I don't want to get ahead of myself here
Well I have still yet to get any new pimples since Friday and my existing pimples (except the 2 from Friday) are completely flat and just have that tiny, flake-like scab that needs to just pop off. So as of now I would say I'm about 90% clear.
I also decided to up the concentration of my chemical peel yesterday to about 50ish% and I also left it on for about a min. longer (3 min or so), and I think this was a good decision. This morning I woke up and for the first time, I can notice there is a very very slight lightening in my PIH (I've realized I've been saying PHI for a really long time lol). Even though the difference is small, it is the first time in a very longgggg time that I have seen any kind of difference at all. And the fact that this is only 1 day after my peel makes me feel even better about the fact that I will see improvement in the next few days, and also after my next 2 peels.
I have decided that I am going to give myself a week after my last peel before I go to the beach because I did some more research and the overwhelming majority of advice says to give it 48 hours for glycolic peels, with even a few saying the time it takes for skin to fully recover after a light glycolic peel is 12 hours. So I think a full week, in addition to applying 30spf to my face when I do go will be more than enough time to let my skin heal enough for sun exposure
Wish me luck!
So I guess I spoke too soon. It litterally felt like 30 min or so after I had written my blog yesterday when I looked at myself in the mirror and noticed a particularly red spot on my right cheek, I lifted my fingers to feel it and sure enough there was a tiny bump, and I knew it was going to turn into a pimple
So I mixed a small amount more of emu oil in with my moisturizer (which did cause me to have slightly oily looking skin, but it wasn't a big deal), and then at night I globed emu oil over the sucker and while I slept. This morning it is still a bit red, but it has come to head and I think will heal quickly.
Ive been really good about picking lately. I admit I've had to stop myself as I sometimes start doing it without thinking about it, but I havn't cause any damage in a while. The pimples I mentioned were healing yesterday are stilll healing, but are still pretty red so I know they're going to leave a mark I'm pretty sure almost every pimple I get leaves a mark, it's so frustrating
But today I'm still feeling positive. I've been going to the gym very consistently lately and it's deffinitly giving me a better mood and attitude overall.
I'll report soon!
So it's been a while since I've written a blog as I am getting busy with end of the semester papers and finals, but summer is around the corner!! My friends and I already have a beach week planed up in my house in Dewey at the end of the month so I can't wait for that!!
What I can wait for is having to go to the beach with no makeup on!!
But I really shouldn't complain..I havn't gotten any new pimples in almost a week and the only active pimples I have now are 4 or 5 ones that are almost completely healed. I don't know if this is due to the sprio kicking in (I am only a week away from 2 months on spiro) or the other stuff in my regimen or maybe the peels, which deff gave me an IB (which are the 4 or 5 healing pimples I currently have). But whatever it is I'm happy about it and am not changing up my routine.
My problem is that it seems no matter what I'm doing my PHI will not go away!! I don't know what I'd classify my PHI as, but I suppose it's moderate. There isn't a lot of it, basically mainly on the centers of my cheeks (I'm saying not a lot because I've seen people with it wayyyyy worse) but its still a good amount. But although there aren't that many marks, it seems that the ones I have are deep and dark and will not even fade.
I've done 5 applications of the chemical peel over the span of 3 weeks and there may have been a slight fading but it's hard to tell. The only difference I've noticed is a more overall even skin tone. Each application is in concentration of about 25-35% acid and I leave it on about 2 min. Should I do a more acidic concentration, or possibly leave it on longer?
I've also looked into TCA peels which claim to be more effective in treating PHI, anyone had any experience with that?
Uhg I was hoping it would all be at least faded by the time I go to the beach, and I only have enough time to do 2 or 3 more applications, so hopefully it's just something I need to biuld up and maybe I'll start to see improvements soon
So 2 weeks ago I took the benzaclin and diffren out of my regimen and only been washing my face with a cleanser, then glycolic 5% wash, then BP 10% wash (this I have been doing for over a month) 1-2 times daily, then useing ACV as a toner, then mixing 1-2 drops of Emu oil in a moisturizer and apply to my face (additionally at night I add a glob of emu oil over active pimples). I have been doing this for the past two weeks and I am only getting about 1-2 pimples per week (which is a deffinite improvment). I do believe the emu oil is great for spot treating as well and has flattened my pimples in about 2 days.
Also, I recently bought an at home chemical peel off ebay which is 50% glycolic acid, with kojic acide, licorice extract and one other skin lightening ingredient I can't remember that make up the other 50%. It recomended to dilute it with moisturizer if needed and leave on for 1 minute for the first week (or a minute longer if you've used glycolic acid before). So I mixed about equal parts chemicals with moisturizer, applied w/ cotton ball over the span of 1.5 min. then used cool water and a washcloth to remove it. Durring application, I started to feel a slight burning feeling, but nothing painful, and my face turned red for a few minutes after. But other than that no problems or anything, though I'm sure my skin will be peeling by tomorrow
So I do this once a week every week and hopefully my hyperpigmentation will improve! Here's hopeing
So I skipped writting a blog last monday because I wasn't seeing any new progress and I was feeling really discouraged. But this week I had gone with no new pimples! Even though I still have the many marks, it was still nice to have no active pimples for a few days
But alas, this morning I woke up with 2 new pimples..they are both really tiny and on my left side, but the one on my cheek bone right below my eye, although very small like I said, is very red and the redness has a diameter of about a cm..very frustrating
It'll be 1 month on spiro for me on wed. and I'm still getting new pimples. Whether it's because the spiro hasn't had enough time to do its magic, or if it's because spiro just isn't for me, it's too soon to tell..so we shall see
And lastly, a few days ago I finally made it to straight ACV (with no water) as I had slowly been adding more ACV to my mixture eveery week so my skin could get used to it. Although I've been using the ACV for a little over 2 weeks now (which is around when most people reported seeing results) I don't think my marks have faded significantly (if they have its a ery small difference). But I'm going to keep going with it because I havn't been using it religiously every day, and also the people who said they saw results that quickly said they had been using it straight with no dilution..
I'll report more when there's more to report!
So I have to admit that I've been bad this week with keeping consistent with my routine. I think I may have missed one day, and a couple days I only did it in the morning. I've just been a little distraced lately but ths week I'm determined to get back on track.
So I'm disapointed I sliped up this week because my skin isn't looking its best. The old pimples are still going away, but I have gotten 1 or 2 new ones, as well as one right on my forehead (where I rarely get them). I also increased the ACV to water ratio now that my skin has adjusted and I think my skin is handling it well, but I'm still not sure if I see a decrease or fading of my marks..maybe sligtly.
Well I'll have pics tomorrow morning in my album but I don't think theres going to be much difference..
Update next week!
Today marks 1 week I've been on my new regimen and I must say I'm pretty pleased. I've only had one small pimple appear all week which is pretty good for me as I usually get 2 or 3 a week, sometimes more. It seems the healing of the existing pimples has slowed though. In the first few days they were noticably smaller every day but in the past few days there all almost completly gone, but I can still see the marks they've left behind (hopefully theyre not done healing and these will go away and not contribute to hyperpigmentation )
Also, so far the ACV may have lightened my marks but I'm not sure if I'm just thinking they are or if they actually are lightening. One thing is for sure it is drying my skin like crazy and on both sides of my chin and nostrals are a little flaky. But I think my skin just needs to get used to it and I just need to be sure to moisturize.
I'm going to post new pictures on my album tomorrow morning because I just dont feel like doing it right now.
Ok, so after reading up on a bunch of peoples' success with Apple Cider Vinegar in lighening their hyperpigmentation, I thought I would add it to my regimen.
I know it's best to wait until you have active acne under control, as new pimples can cause new scars..but I did some research on using ACV for your face and it looks like it'll even help in drying up your pimples, so it's like a 2 in 1! Plus I havn't had too many pimples in the past few weeks and I have a BUNCH of red/brown marks so I don't think it would hurt to try to get rid of the marks already there, even if new ones appear.
So it looks like it's best to treat the ACV as a toner and am going to apply it with a cotton ball after I shower/wash my face then let it dry and apply my other topical treatments and see how it goes. Ive heard of different ratios for vinegar/water and I think I'm going to start at 2/3 ACV and 1/3 water for now, because my face is pretty tolerent and then gradually move towards just using pure ACV..
So I'll now also be discussing the improvment of my marks (hopefully, if there is any) wish me luck!
So I know I said I wasn't going to post again for another week but I got some unexpected quick results.
Its only the morning of day 4 and my existing pimples are reduced from 80-90% and a couple are completly gone! I'm very excited about this because normally my pimples can take a week or 2 before they even just start to go away. (As a note I did find 1 new pimple on my chin but its very small and smooth and I only noticed it because I felt it)
I also must say that I have refrained from picking at them (which I am very OCD about and it took A LOT to not pick) so that may also have a big influence on why they are going away so quickly. I don't think it is yet to be a result of the Aldactone because 99% of the reviews on this site and others said it took 1-2 months to see any noticable results, with the quickest I saw being 3 weeks. But honestly I don't care if it's the medications or my lack of picking, I'm just happy it's working and I'm not going to change what I'm doing
Well...except I'm going to start only using BenzaClin in the AM until my skin has more time to adjust to it. My face is usually pretty tuff and can handle these types of drying medications very well but this one must be particularly harsh. Yesterday morning I put it on and i noticed my face was a bit pink for a while afterwards. I waited 20 min and put on my moisterizer and my face turned very red and it began to burn, but subsided after 10-15 min. Then another 20 min later I began putting on makeup and when I put on my concealer it began to burn again..but also soon subsided.
So I think my face just needs more time to adjust..
Well I guess I'll just post when I have something new to report..thanks for reading!
Well this blog is mainly for my benefit so I can track my progress on my new regimen, but obviously everyone is welcome to read to see how I do in case you are interested in any of the products I'm using. And as a side note, if anyone is interested, all 3 are prescriptions so if you want them you'll need to talk to you doctor..
That being said, i'll give you a little info on myself. I'm a 20-year-old female who has delt with acne since my mid teens. It was never too severe but I deffinitly needed to wash my face everyday and use topical OTC medications to keep it under control. When I was 17 or 18 I started taking birthcontrol and my acne was almost all gone, but last July I went off bc for a few months and I got some pretty severe acne, worse than I ever had before. I think it was about Jan. that I got back on it and I'll say my acne is not as severe as before but its deff. not as good as it was when I was on it before.
Also the worst part of it is it's left me with some pretty terrible hyperpigmentation so that even when im not breaking out too bad (a pimple or 2) it still looks like I have active pimples all over my cheeks..very frustrating.
But before I can treat the hyperpigmentation I have to make sure that I no longer have any active acne and that lead me to going to a dermatologist for the first time. (Even though it was annoying he had to remove one of my freckles because it was darker than the rest :/) but he prescribed me with a benzoyl peroxide wash, BenzaClin to use in AM/PM, Differin to use in PM, and a pill called aldactone (since I don't want to take an antibiotic as I am taking the pill for contraception purposes) 50mg once a day. From what I've read online this drug has worked wonders for many women out there, but for hormonal acne and I'm not 100% convinced my acne is hormal. We shall see.
So since I've only been on this regimen for 2 full days theres not much to report on as far as my acne goes. I do have a new tiny pimple this morning which is annoying but I'm not going to get discouraged, almost everyone on the topical stuff said your skin goes through "purging" where it gets worse before it gets better.
So I'll be updating on a weekly basis to report my progress as well as uploading pics under the album "New derm., new regimen " if anyone would like to see the visual progress or just put a face to a name.
Cya next week!
