About Me & My Skin:
28 year old female, 114 lbs, Caucasian (Italian + Ukranian), mild acne (small skin coloured bumps that come and go), I tan easily, combination skin, I have experienced months on end with no pimples what so ever and then BOOM, I find a colony of tiny bumps in random places on my face, chest and back.
Why I Chose Accutane:
I’ll be 30 in 1.5 years. I’m sick and tired of the highs and lows in my confidence due to my clear skin one month, then pimpled skin the next. I’ve spent thousands upon thousands of dollars over the years on products, facials and other procedures. Obviously, nothing has cured my skin of acne forever. I did try Accutane when I was 18 years old and my skin remained flawless for years. I have faith that this round, at my age will irradicate acne in my life for good. Fingers crossed!
I’m well aware of all the side affects of Accutane. I have no plans to have children until I’m married and my boyfriend hasn’t even proposed yet, so a pregnancy is not in my immediate future! Lol. I also cannot imagine more than one week without my birthcontrol pills! The one week of sugar pills causes my emotions to run rampant, I need those hormones to be emotionally stable (my POOR boyfriend! Lol).
Products & Procedures I’ve Tried:
â– Tri Cyclen Low Birth Control Pills
â– Seasalt Microdermabrasion
â– Tanning (sun and sunless)
â– Over the counter topicals
â– Prescription topicals
â– Vitamins and lots of water
â– Organic foods/ diet
Nada- none of these things kept my acne at bay for longer than a few weeks at each time, sometimes never.
Products I Will Use:
â– Aveeno face wash
â– An organic hydrosol spray to balance the PH level in my skin
â– Cetaphil SPF 15 moisturizer
â– Jane Iredale and Bare Escentuals Mineral Powder (makeup)
â– Aveeno Intensive Body Moisturizer
â– Blistex Lip Medic Salve (blue container)
â– Vitamins and Minerals: Zinc, Selenium, Omega 3-6-9, Vitamin E, B Complex, Glucosamine (for achy joints)
â– Cases and cases of bottled water (I cannot stand the taste of tap water)
My Accutane Journey:
I went back to the Dermatologist who first put me on Accutane. He runs the Toronto Acne Clinic, located at Yonge and Eglinton. He’s very straightforward and professional, which I like. Before I left the office, my derm stopped me and said “your skin is going to look really beautiful once this is overâ€, that made me smile and gave me the hope I know I’ll need over the next four months. I did the blood work and two days later I had my Accutane prescription in hand. I’m on birthcontrol and my boyfriend and I use condoms, so no worries there. My derm started me on 40mg’s of Accutane, once a day, with a fatty food and lots of water throughout the day. I have my next appointment in 30days.
Tonight, I’ll take my 6th pill. So far, my side effects include DRY lips and skin on my face. I have a bright red mark on my cheek but no bump underneath it. My forehead is usually covered in tiny bumps but they seem to be slightly flatter today. YAY. My two week mark, which is said to be the time when you experience your “Initial Breakout†will coincide with Valentine’s Day. Oh. Joy. I hope my boyfriend wants to either stay home or have dinner at the darkest restaurant in town! Lol. Or better yet, maybe the skin Gods will have mercy on me and save me from that dreaded Initial Breakout….a girl can wish, can’t she?! So that’s it for now, nothing major to report as of yet. I’ll keep the world posted as my journey continues.
Please feel free to comment or ask questions. I know how helpful other Accutane users journals were when I was researching and experiencing my first Accutane experience 10 years ago.
