So I'm at the very end of week 4, tomorrow I start week 5!
Here's a summary of the week for my skin:
One of my cheeks was/is perfectly clear all the past week, whereas the other erupted with several ugly pus-filled pimples that now are going away.
I'm still breaking out it seems but the pimples I'm getting don't *seem* to be sticking around as long from what I can tell. My clear cheek has two spots that feel like a couple pimples may be arising from under the skin, but I can't tell. They don't hurt at all and they're flushed this really light pink, and what I can feel under the skin doesn't feel like some big pimple or anything.. I dunno, I guess we'll see over the next several days if they erupt! I've put some AHA on them as a spot treatment in hopes that'll keep them from turning into inflamed pimples in case that's what they are.
I've also tried the AHA! I really like it, it stings like *hell* but it does help with the flaking and I *think* the pimples, too! My flaking isn't gone (Yes, my flaking is that bad!), but the AHA definitely helps.
Overall I *think* my skin is improving... I really think Dan's what to expect page though might be a bit off from other peoples' logs I've read here. That or my case is just one of the persistent ones!
So I'm on day... 22 I think! After my last post several of those whiteheads that cropped up did turn into larger pimples. Not huge, but yucky pus-filled things. I was feeling really, really dejected about my skin and so discouraged.
Over the past couple of days though I'm feeling a bit better because my skin SEEMS to be calming down and healing up. I've still got pimples on my face but for the most part they all seem to be slowly healing and I've only got one new pimple since. - A tiny, tiny tiny little pinprick sized thing that I pray doesn't get any bigger!
So right now I'm just waiting for the pimples I have to completely heal up. I'm up to pretty much the full dose of BP and I've upped my moisturizer a bit so my flakes are getting better. Tomorrow night I'm going to use my AHA, I can't wait! I'd feel tons better about my skin if I could just get a handle on these flakes!
My AHA came in! Unfortunately though I can't use it until next Wednesday because I'm at my boyfriend's house and it was delivered to mine, hehe. That's fine, I wanted to wait until close to a month to start using it anyway so it forces me to not cheat and use the stuff too early!
So my big pimples seem better. Yesterday morning I had one that was just filled with pus and nasty looking, but by yesterday night all the pus was gone (It was weird! It's like it just disappeared!) and the pimple was much better looking. All of the pimples from my week 2 breakout are still there but seem to be flattening out.
Several tinnyy whiteheads have cropped up again on my chin and a tiny pimple has emerged next to my nose, but beyond that no new pimples so far. I don't mind the tiny whiteheads because they go away so fast! I'm hoping the pimple next to my nose though wont turn into a giant one. I don't really think it will, it doesn't look like that type, but we'll see.
I'm not sure how I feel about my skin at the moment. It's hard to tell how you're doing as far as active pimples goes when you're SO distracted by the nasty flakes and dead skin. - My skin texture is just so rough right now (It looks AWFUL), all I want to do is exfoliate. LOL I'm going to hold out for several more days though until that beautiful night I can use the AHA. I'm dreaming of having all these flakes dissolved in AHAAAAA. XD
So yeah, I THINK I'm clearing up, but it's distracting and a bit difficult to tell with my overall skin just looking icky yucky. Ah well, I'm sticking to it, I really feel like the regimen is going to clear me up. I just have to be patient!
I can't believe I'm already on day 16! I love when each day goes by because I feel like I'm that much closer to clear skin. (Even if my skin isn't showing that just yet, hehe.)
Today my skin is... Maybe a little better? All the little whiteheads are gone, now I'm just left with the pimples that turned into bigger ones. They've all come to a head very fast, which I take to be a good sign. My two old pimples that were healing seem significantly smaller today, which is nice.
My skin is still SOOOO flaky. Though I've come to figure out what one of my biggest problems right now with my skin is like when I'm out in public, etc. - My makeup goes on fairly rough on top of all the BP/moisturizer/etc even after it's had time to soak into my skin a little bit. It's not a huge issue but once my skin is clear enough that I don't feel the need to wear as much foundation I'm probably going to look into changing foundations to one that goes on top of my regimen smoother.
I'm already at day 15! It doesn't seem like I've been on the regimen for two weeks now but I have! That's pretty cool.
I ordered Dan's AHA yesterday on a suggestion from dairy_free_diva (Thanks again hon!). I'm going to try and not use it until 3 weeks to a month though because I want to stick to the regimen as close as I can. I'll admit I'm VERY excited about trying it though, I'd LOVE to get rid of these flakes.
So my skin status? Terribble. My skin is dry AND broken out now. XD At least it seems to be following in the "what to expect" pattern, I just hope it clears up fast! I can totally handle having flaky skin or pimples, but both together is just icky. I'm trying not to let it wear down on my self confidence too much, and I'm doing a pretty good job for the most part. It's admittedly hard though to go out and face the world when your skin just looks really, really bad.
A lot of my little bitty whiteheads went away, but several of them turned into bigger pimples. It sucks because now I've got 6 bigger pimples to deal with. At least it'll be an interesting experiment of sorts to see how quickly they go away! LOL, Gotta find the bright side of pimples somehow!
Tomorrow is day 14, the last day of my second week! I'm really excited to be farther and farther along in the regimen and I absolutely cannot wait until my skin starts clearing up!
My skin's still looking pretty crappy, still has lots of little whiteheads. A couple of them seem to be a little better but overall my skin is flaky, covered in tiny whiteheads, and rough looking. - Not pretty at all!
I also have this TERRIBLE habit of wanting to pull off the giant flakes on my face. I hate seeing them there and so I want so badly to pull them off. Then I'll "scrape" my skin with my fingernail, as gross as that sounds, trying to get more flakes off. I do this REALLY gently of course, the skin is so flaky it just comes right off, but I know i shouldn't be doing it at all so my goal is to not do it at all again tonight. If I can make it the rest of the night without pulling flakes off I'll be proud.
So that's the update, I know the beginning of the regimen can be rough so I'm still excited, I just wish my clear skin would come faster! XD Anyone who's done the regimen/gotten clear on it have any words of encouragement? Did your guys' skin have a period of looking pretty terrible toward the beginning?
I'm updating to tell you guys that I think I'm officially going through the second week breakout. My skin looks pretty crappy right now, a bunch of tinnnyy whiteheads popped up all over my cheeks and stuff. I counted, I have a total of 12 active pimples right now!
Granted, most of them are TINY. A lot of these whiteheads are about the size of a like a pen tip or something but it's still really discouraging.
I'm trying to keep my head up though and remember that a breakout in the 2nd week is to be expected! I'm excited to see how they are tomorrow, let's pray they aren't any worse!
I'm loving that it's the weekend. I'm not going anywhere today and my face can just breathe free from makeup!
I think I'm going to declare myself, tentatively, going through the second-week breakout. That pimple on my chin is now a nasty puss-filled yucky thing, verryy gross. it looks like even the slightest whatever could pop it. LOL The pimple on my cheekbone doesn't really look any bigger but it's there, and the pimple on my cheek that I could barely see yesterday is a tiny bit bigger today, I can see it now though it's by no means huge. On my other cheek I have two small pimples as well.
It's day 12 so I feel comfortable declaring the second-week breakout. Hell, I'm almost to week three! I'm very curious to see just how quickly this breakout heals up!
I upped my BP dosage yesterday. I have Dan's tube BP so it's a bit difficult to judge how much i need. He says a finger's length but I KNOOWWw he has bigger fingers than me. LOL Seriously, i have TINY hands, most women have bigger hands than me so I'm certain Dan's hands dwarf mine.
So I'm using my middle finger for now since it's my longest finger, I'm at about 3/4 of a finger's length. What I'll probably do sometime is get my boyfriend in the bathroom with me and use his finger for judgment on what my full dosage will be, his hands certainly have to be closer to Dan's hand size than mine are!
I've really come to prefer using Dan's products. - The BP goes on beautifully clear and his moisturizer + jojoba oil has me almost completely flake free! I mean I can still tell my face is dry but it's not flaking off and dryness is to be expected so it's cool. The redness has also decreased somewhat, I don't look as brilliantly flushed, which is good.
Unfortunately I also have three new pimples! Remember that spot on my chin where I was expecting a breakout? Well there's no "breakout" so far but one little pimple has developed. I also have a pimple on the far side of my cheekbone that sort of just cropped up yesterday! When I was looking at it yesterday though it looked like it may have been headed for giant pimple territory but today it's very small, which is exciting. I also have another tiiiiinnnyy pimple on my cheek that i didn't even notice until the light caught it right and I noticed it was raised!
Definitely nothing to worry about. I'm unsure if this is the start of my week 2 breakout, if they're just random pimples that were going to pop up anyway, or if they're period-related as I'm about a week from my period. (Cue PMSing and usually pimples XD)
I'm actually REALLY curious to see how quickly they go away! If they act like pre-regimen pimples they'll get bigger and stick around for at LEAST a week, but I'm hoping here on the regimen they'll heal up quick!
It's rainy today, I love the rain. I'm listening to it hit some sort of metal (Maybe the gutter?) on the side of our house, sooo pretty.
I am SOOO excited about Dan's moisturizer. I've seen some people on the forums who were complaining about it not being moisturizing enough so I was a bit worried but fortunately I haven't had that problem at all.
In fact, I find it SO much more moisturizing than Cetaphil! (And Cetaphil's so thick and greasy!) Here was my skin on the regimen: I'd get all the steps completed and the Cetaphil moisturizer, while my skin was absorbing it, would hide any flakes and it wouldn't look too bad. 5-12 hours later the flakes would start appearing and by the time it was time to get to the next turn of regimen-doing my skin would be flake city.
Like, seriously, I figure people must be wondering what kind of funky skin disease I have with all those flakes. LOL
Last night I used Dan's moisturizer for the first time at about 7 PM. At midnight, when I went to bed, my skin still hadn't really started flaking. - So exciting! I put a tiny bit more moisturizer on just because it was flaking soo bad earlier and when I woke up this morning I DID have some flakes. But nothing at ALL like the Cetaphil flakes. They were lessened and looked more just like dry skin and not massive hunks of dead skin falling off. LOL
So today I used Dan's moisturizer this morning at 7 again and it's 1 PM now, 6 hours later and my face is only minimally flaky. I can tell that the flakes are lessening with use of this moisturizer (Jojoba added, of course.) and that just makes me excited.
So with my flakes lessened I'm noticing how red my skin is. It just looks really really flushed. (Without foundation, of course.) xD It's not pretty but i know it's temporary so I don't mind it at all.
So yeah, so far two thumbs up for Dan's moisturizer. I plan on leaving a review for it once I've been using it longer and am sure it's as great as I think it is so far.
My skin's looking nice today. No new pimples or anything so far, not even on my chin where I thought yesterday it looked doomed for a breakout. We'll see how it goes!
Panda Express tonight with the boyfriend, I LOOVVEE Panda Express. <3 yum.
I finally got to use my DKR/Acne.org products tonight!
I LOVE them, they are sooo much better than the drugstore ones. The Cetaphil lotion had been stinging SO badly with the BP (I'm guessing it was the glycerin), and Dan's moisturizer is FANTASTIC. It goes on sooo smooth and it doesn't sting at alll!!
His BP goes on beautifully too, I lovvee how it's not a cream, it just disappears into your skin. I love it!
My face is SOOO flaky now. I'm hoping Dan's moisturizer takes care of that better than the Cetaphil. By the end of the day I look like I have a disease or something. LOL That and I CANNOT keep from peeling the flakes off, however gently, and I don't want to be touching my skin that much but I just hate seeing them there. XD
I admit the flakes do make me a bit self conscious even though I just try to roll with them. They're totally worth it for the regimen and I know they're not a forever thing so I'm fine dealing with them for now. I'm just glad the people I deal with on a daily basis are sweet enough not to ask why my face looks like it has some kind of molting disease, hahahaha.
My chin looks like it could be on the verge of a breakout but I'm not sure, we'll see how it goes over the next couple of days. I'm in week two so I do wonder if I'll get the second week breakout or not. Either way I'm sooo excited and am fully confident that the regimen is going to clear me up.
I was thinking earlier how awesome it is I have such a cool and supportive boyfriend, he's been amazingly supportive of me doing the regimen and is confident it's going to clear me up as well. Yay!
So I'm sitting here at school doing absolutely nothing at the moment, but I'm excited about my skin so I wanted to update. (I may update later too, depends on if I have anything new to say! )
I have a lot of red marks. Like, a lot. I'm extremely fair skinned so red marks stand out a lot and most pimples leave them for me. It sucks but they always fade at least. Anyway, because of my red marks I have a hard time sometimes really judging the condition of active pimples. - So when I put my foundation on and everything's covered, it's easy to see what's a pimple sticking up and what's a red mark.
Well today I only have three raised "pimples"! One of them is one of the little annoying pimples I've been getting on my chin that are disappearing so fast on the regimen now and the other is a pimple I got on my right cheek that's healing up really fast. On my left cheek there's a "pimple" as well but I hesitate to even really call it that.
Mid January I started getting this pimple on my left cheek, *three* weeks ago. By late January it had developed into this huge, awful, disgusting nasty pimple with multiple heads. (LOL It sounds like I'm talking about some mythological beast, but damn that pimple sort of was, it was awful, and right on the front of my cheek!) It had started healing and going down before the regimen but since starting the DKR it just keeps going down and down. It's still raised but it keeps getting better and it definitely no longer hurts or anything.
So far anyway my skin's fast on its way to healing up these pimples! That being said I know that I could easily break out again, especially considering some people have a breakout during the second week, which I'm now into.
Either way I'm not worried or discouraged, I'm excited because it's obvious the regimen is making changes on my skin I've never seen before! Good changes! It's exciting.
I haven't updated in several days because there really wasn't anything to update with. I'm sitting right now waiting for my BP to dry so that I can go put my moisturizer on.
I've come to really enjoy doing the regimen. I'm not sure why, but I kind of like the "down time" where I'm waiting for BP to dry and absorb and whatnot before moving on to moisturizer or whatever. I also love the feeling of each time doing the regimen I'm closer and closer to clear skin!
My skin is incredibly flaky. I'm trying not to wear tons of foundation but the foundation I do wear my skin's texture is just not sexy at all. Not that I really care because I know it's totally short-term but my skin is flaky and the areas that aren't flaking off have a layer of dead skin that makes my skin look rougher than I know it is. All I care about is that underneath the yucky dead skin is nice smooth skin!
My pimples though seem to be getting better. I had two on my right cheek and one literally sprang up and disappeared within a couple days and the other one is on its way to healing up right now. On my left cheek I had a new pimple crop up as well this past week that's almost completely gone. I have another "bump" on that cheek from a HUUGGEEE multi-headed pimple that was there way before I started the regimen and is going away now but is definitely one of those that's going to take some more time to flatten out. At least it's not painful and active anymore!
My chin has been odd this entire past week. It's been popping up with tiny pimples that come and then go away within a day or two at most. It seems to be getting better now. I think it's been purging, which I don't mind.
I find it interesting how fast these pimples I've gotten this past week are going away. In the past pimples would take me a minimum of a week to be gone and usually longer, so these "several day" pimples are awesome in comparison!
I'm a total makeup junkie. I have been for years, I love the stuff. I love playing with new looks, trying new things and transforming my face. Unfortunately though, foundation and concealer aren't "fun" like getting to play with eye and lip colors are. They're just there to make me feel normal, as I'm sure any woman with acne can relate.
I know Dan doesn't recommend wearing makeup when first starting the regimen but at this point I just don't feel confident enough going out without at least some coverage. I've been trying to compromise though and am wearing a lot less foundation and concealer and forgoing contouring and illuminating altogether. My skin definitely doesn't look as nice when I go out but I figure it's a small price to pay for clear skin in the future.
Today was day 4 on the regimen. My skin is very flaky, which is to be expected. I'm also getting these tinnyyy whiteheads, mostly on my chin. They seem to go away very fast but my chin is just sort of sore altogether. I don't believe I've ever had a "purging" breakout but for some reason I just kinda feel like that's what my skin is doing right now, as on top of the tiny whiteheads i have another pimple on my chin now that hurts, fortunately it's not big.
I wouldn't say my skin's improved much but I really feel like it's going through a purging phase, I'm not sure if it's the jojoba oil causing it to purge or if it's just the regimen itself but I'm expecting my skin to go up and down for the next several weeks so I'm not discouraged.
Before I start I'm going to give a little background about my skin.
I never really had acne until I turned 15. At this point in time I decided to "get serious" about taking care of my skin and loaded on several different moisturizers a day (Yeah I have no idea why. XD) for a while until lo and behold I started breaking out. Of course I stopped using the products but my skin's never really been the same. I don't know that I'd feel right totally blaming the moisturizers for years of mild breakouts since but needless to say I've been trying to get my skin 100% clear for about 9 years now. (I'm 23 going on 24 in March.)
My skin's not the worst I've seen all things considered, at the very most at any given time I'll have 5-6 active pimples but more often than not it'll be more like 1-3. My biggest problem is hyperpigmentation, I'm extremely fair-skinned and almost every pimple leaves a red mark that's very obvious on my skin and takes forever to fade.
At this point I'm not worried too much about making the red marks fade quicker as much as I am clearing my skin so there will be no more pimples and no new red marks. - The ones I have can just fade on their own sweet time.
In November of '10 I got the bright idea to stop the only product I've tried that's ever worked for keeping me relatively clear - my 10% drugstore BP. I read that some people thought it could prolong red marks and thought "what the hell", let's see what happens. I also started using a moisturizer again during this time and it all ended up with my skin breaking out worse than it had in a long time. Come late December I was right back to my 10% BP and trying to get my skin back under control.
My skin started getting somewhat better with my 10% BP when I found acne.org and started reading about the DKR. I read some of the success stories and saw some amazing before and after pictures of how beautifully clear people had gotten. - I haven't been 100% clear since i was a young teenager. BP has always worked well at keeping me relatively pimple-free, so I figured it couldn't hurt to try.
The only thing that scares me is the moisturizer use, I know it's important and needed and I'm going to do it, I've just had such awful luck with moisturizers in the past. I'm going to assume though it's because I've never known or paid any attention to comedogenic ingredients, and the moisturizer I tried over December was an SPF with avobenzone, which I read Dan's had trouble with as well so I'm hoping that was why.
I ordered Dan Kern's products last Friday but I really wanted to get started on the regimen so I went out and bought some drugstore products to use until mine arrive. I bought Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, Neutrogena OTS and the Equate brand version of Cetaphil's Moisturizing Lotion. I also ran by Vitamin Shoppe and picked up their jojoba oil.
I started the regimen Monday night. I had already been using 10% BP so my pimples were already drying up (As well as my skin, it was flaky when I started the regimen! ), and the ones that had been are still clearing up. I have two new pimples that popped up yesterday and today (Day 3), but I'm not discouraged, I figure those were probably already forming and were going to come up no matter what.
My skin is flaky and sometimes at night it burns and itches a little, but I know that's to be expected. To be honest I kind of like it, it feels like at least something's going on with my skin, if that makes any sense. LOL The cetearyl alcohol and ceteareth-20 in my moisturizer concern me a lot, so I can't wait to get to using Dan's moisturizer instead. - His products sound amazing and I really want to be doing the regimen using them.
My DKR products arrived today, btw, but I can't use them until next Wendesday night, they were shipped to my house and I'm staying at my boyfriend's house! Ah well. I'll be updating. I took a picture of my skin Monday night, I'll do weekly picture updates. I'll post the pictures next Monday when I have a week's progress to show. - I'm not expecting too much difference though in just a week, but here's hoping!
