I'm three weeks into BCT and they let us use our phones today! As for my skin,, once I incorporated the green tea moisturizer and vaseline into my regimen, it began to get dramatically clearer. On june 7 when I left I had five pimples and a bunch of red marks. By the time I started bct the following week (reception week isn't really bct) my skin tone was a lovely olive with very faint marks. Most of the pimples disappeared on their own, and I popped one that was ready to be popped. But then about a week and a half ago I. Ran out of proactiv bp and started using 5% bp that I got from self care at boot camp. My skin quickly deteriorated, and I developed three pimples before I finally realized the problem: the proactive face wash has exfoliating beads in it, and the higherr concentration of bp was irritating my skin. Two days ago I started using a 2% salicylic acid face wash wit the 5% bp and this morning the zits started going down! Boot camp isn't as bad as I thought. I'm here with a lot of high schoolers and their skin is way worse than mine so I feel better!
Before I talk about Proactive's cons, I'd like to discuss the other free product I received with my shipment, which was the Refining Mask. I opted to get this one because I remembered seeing it in the commercials. Directions suggest applying it twice a week to your face after cleansing, letting it sit for ten minutes, and then washing it off and continue with steps two and three (toner and BP). The active ingredient in the mask is sulfur, but it doesn't smell that offensive. It definitely isn't hurting my skin, but it's too soon to tell if it's necessarily helping it. Today I thought my red marks didn't look so bad. For some reason my forehead is bumpy and I have one small whitehead/pustule on my left jaw but otherwise my skin is smooth.
I also purchased Dead Sea Cosmetics Facial Peeling Gel from Amazon for $23 (or around that price). Directions say to use it once a week. My skin is so soft after I use it! You rub the gel on your face and then keep rubbing as dead skin cells slough off. However, it is still very gentle. If you buy it at the mall they'll try to charge you $160 which is completely exorbitant. I'm going to use that again before I go.
So Proactiv's cons. The bottles are SO tiny. I have been using this stuff for just over a week, yet the toner is nearly half empty. I make an effort to be frugal with the BP and cleanser because I know those are the really important, medicated products. Besides the lack of salicylic acid the small bottle size is the only con, but it is an important one. Why can't they just make the bottles three times larger? MONEY! I'm positive the stuff isn't going to last me all nine weeks of boot camp. I definitely need to be putting something on my skin, though.
What I have learned during this journey is that I don't need to be using such harsh products, 10% BP and 2% SA. 2.5% BP and .5% SA do the trick just fine. So my plan is to find a 2.5% BP cleanser and a .5% SA toner, from the drugstore.
I leave for boot camp Tuesday morning, and then I won't have computer access for two months. I'm planning on keeping a boot camp blog by writing letters to my cousin which she will put online. If anyone wants to read my boot camp blog send me a message or write a comment here and I'll send you the url for the blog!
My Proactive arrived last Thursday, May 26, and I began using it immediately. I chose the Green Tea Moisturizer as one of my free gifts because I'm running out of my Juice moisturizer and I'd like to try one that is potentially cheaper. The BP cleanser, step one, has tiny beads in it, so it's really more of scrub than a cleanser. The directions state to rub it around for a minute or two, so I always count to sixty while gently rubbing it around my face. Dan didn't give the beads a favorable review but so far I like it; the beads are very very small and aren't irritating my skin--yet. When my face is dry, it feels very soft. Step 2 is the Toner, but it doesn't contain any acne-fighting ingredients! That is the only issue I have with Proactiv, no salicylic acid. I truly believe my face requires a delicate combination of SA and BP to be clear. Anyway, the toner is just fine, no complaints other than the lack of SA. Step 3 is the BP lotion, and it goes on nice and smooth, very reminiscent of Dan's lotion. Dan says you should be using copious amounts of BP to clear your skin. But when I was glopping that shit on my face months ago it only irritated my skin and gave me more pimples. I definitely prefer a thinner layer of BP. As for the Green Tea Moisturizer, I LOVE IT! I love it even more than my Juice moisturizer. I love it so much that today I ordered the biggest available side and paid an additional shipping cost which came out to half the price I paid for the product itself to ensure it would ship to me before I go to boot camp next week. (!!!) It goes on kind of like a gel, but it dries almost INSTANTLY--no fifteen minute bullshit like with Dan's moisturizer. And it actually MOISTURIZES. I don't need to use a handful and spend ten minutes rubbing it in.
On Friday I noticed a large pimple, a pustule, developing on my left cheek, along with three smaller ones on my right cheek. I popped it, waited for the blood to subside, and then continued to squeeze until all the pus came out. I have discovered that is to secret to successful extractions: ensuring ALL the crap is out. That night I got up to go to the bathroom and I looked closer at my face in the mirror. The three zits on my right cheek looked like papules but I was able to successfully extract all three of them. It is so satisfying to pop pimples. Not as satisfying as the ability to not wear foundation, of course. I put more of the Proactive BP lotion on my right cheek and left cheek. In the morning, the areas were red yet smooth. They're still smooth today. I've been applying vaseline and the redness has considerably diminished. I hope I see a difference with the microdermabrasion I'm getting Thursday.
Since those extractions I haven't had any major pimples, just tiny whiteheads that go away in a day. If I didn't have these red marks my skin would be perfect.
I'm horrified. Absolutely horrified. I guess it's been just about exactly a month since I've been able to use all three MC products, and my skin is paying dearly. Tiny whiteheads EVERYWHERE. My forehead, my hairline, my jawline, even on the tip of my nose. Last Thursday I went to the MC website to see if I could order a new kit and a box popped up saying they're reformulating their bottles or product or something so shipments are delayed. I guess I'm not the only one to notice the problems with the foam dispenser. So on Thursday I caved and ordered ProActiv. It's supposed to arrive by May 26.
I bought a Groupon for a microdermabrasion and also a facial, which I'm sure I've mentioned before. Due to scheduling conflicts and not much time left until I ship out, I had to schedule the microdermabrasion on June 1 and the facial on June 2! I hope it's okay to get these things done consecutively like that. Depending on how long the ProActiv takes to work they'll probably have to do extractions during my microdermabrasion. My face is always red for a few days after I get extractions, albeit smooth. But I won't be able to use makeup to cover the redness in BCT which I why I wanted to schedule these things with adequate time before I ship out for the redness to subside. Maybe I'll get another facial on June 6. Why not? I'm planning a "spa day" that day anyway to get my eyebrows and nails done, I have the graduation money (not like I need to really save it for anything) and I doubt I'll have any new zits only four days after the groupon facial.
I don't know if I'll really do that, I'm just so frustrated. My skin DOES need some sort of prescribed program. ProActiv doesn't contain any salicylic acid so I'm worried it won't work. I can't believe Max Clarity did this to me with their bottle bullshit. I don't even know what to do with my face now, I'm washing it with something different every night. I'm about to use hand soap, seriously!
On Max Clarity that is. Since before April 25 I haven't used the MC benzoyl peroxide, and about two weeks ago I bought Clean & Clear Deep Action Cream Cleanser to use instead of the MC BP foaming body wash. I called MC again today to find out where the FUCK my order is and they said they aren't shipping out new orders and will issue me a refund of my $26! Which I have yet to receive. Tonight, I'm going to just phase it out completely. I'll try using witch hazel again. The thing is, my skin is great. Besides red marks, I have had no new pimples, and even the red marks are fading with the help of vaseline. Maybe all I needed was a couple months on Max Clarity to get it back to normal. Or maybe my acne-prone skin just ran its course.
I've got a groupon for a facial and a groupon for a microdermabrasion treatment, so I'll be doing those in the next three weeks. I finished ALL my work for college today! Period! I'm graduating on Friday, and then leaving for the Army eighteen days after that. I am beyond excited. I will make an effort to post pictures of my skin before and after the microdermabrasion and the facial.
I called on April 25 to order a new batch of Max Clarity. Nearly TWO weeks later it still isn't here. So yesterday I called to ask when my order was coming through, and I was told that due to high demand all orders weren't being shipped for two weeks! My products have apparently been sitting in a warehouse somewhere, not being shipped to me, because of high demand. INFURIATING. I have little tiny pimples and my boyfriend keeps telling me I should get Proactiv. Luckily the vaseline is doing its job and the red marks are going down, but I still have a small zit above my eyebrow and another over my lip and on my chip. They're REALLY tiny, no where near as big as the ones I used to get while I was using Dan's regimen.
The MC customer service lady said I'll probably get it in like a week, and it's too late to order better shipping. It better come soon, I don't know how long my skin can take it!
Last week (two weeks ago?) my MC BP stopped working. Without BP, I started putting ACV (apple cider vinegar) on my face. That was the ONLY change I made to my routine. I broke out! (
I called MC and had them ship me a new kit, so that should arrive this week. In the meantime, I got a facial last Wednesday and the lady popped all my zits and put a bunch of creams and stuff on my skin. Now, if I touch it, it's nice and smooth. But the red marks are horrendous! I've been putting vaseline on which is helping to smooth it out but these marks are just awful. I have another facial planned for late May, maybe that will help. Also, I have confidence that once I re-implement BP the marks will begin to fade. At least the pimples are gone in the meantime, so when I wear makeup my skin looks great.
I'm shipping out in only five weeks...this is nuts. I have my haircut appointment set for a week before I ship out. I'm donating as much as I can to Locks of Love and chopping it off to about chin-length. I have some side bangs right now and if I let them air-dry they turn into ringlet curls. I'm so excited to have a curly bob! On the bright side,if my skin really looks like crap without makeup during BCT I can just move my hair in front of my face haha!
The marks become fainter and lighter every day. I haven't been writing so much recently because there isn't much to say! If I skip a day of MC, I might get a teeny-tiny zit, which goes away once MC is resumed, and that's how I know MC is working. Last week I got my new Insanity: The Asylum workout, and I've been doing that plus following the meal plan, which emphasizes a lot of vegetables and lean protein. I've been eating so many vegetables this past week! My skin looks bright and even, especially after washing my face and after a night of vaseline on my skin. I guess the only complaints I have are that the blue bottle is supposed to be used twice a day, but it's the same size as the yellow and dark blue bottles that are only supposed to be used once a day. Therefore I use the blue one up twice as fast and have to use the MC Body Acne Wash. Also, this is my second kit and the same thing has happened to the dark blue bottle: after a while it stops foaming and comes out like a liquid. But at least this stuff WORKS!
My face is so smooth every day when I wake up due to increased amounts of vaseline on my skin at night. It's almost paradoxical that a substance so greasy could be so beneficial to oily, acne-prone skin, but it's true. I'm still taking periodical photobooth pictures of my face so I can see the good vaseline has done. Just a little over eight weeks until I ship out!!
What can I say? They make a good product. My skin looks so much better than on Dan's regimen. Even better, ALL my bacne is gone! I was on birth control for one month, and while it didn't really affect my face my back is pimple-free. There are some red marks but I anticipate them to go away in time.
Today, I went to the mail room at my school and told them to send back the package containing $70 worth of Dan Kern products. Then I ordered another kit of Max Clarity.
Everyone keeps telling me how good my skin has been looking--my roommates, my friends, my boyfriend. I never should have believed that stupid Max Clarity thread and all the negative things people said about it. I know my skin, and I know I need the combination of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to truly heal it. Max Clarity provides that in a non-irritating manner.
Not only is it not irritating but it also doesn't take up a whole goddamned hour of my entire day to perform! With all the extra time in the morning I'm now able to blow dry my hair and wear makeup. At night, after I use MC products and my moisturizer, I'm also applying vaseline to the red marks. I applied vaseline to a pimple I had (after skin care routine) and it healed quickly and left behind a lighter, smaller mark. I'll continue to update this blog, but now so people can see that Max Clarity isn't bad after all. At least, not bad for every person who uses it.
My face is already looking better on day two of Max Clarity. I can tell the stubborn pimple on my right cheek is healing, and the smaller one on my right cheek is almost completely flattened. My boyfriend also noticed my improving skin. MC is so quick and non-messy; I don't care how much more expensive it is if it WORKS. Also I finally purchased legit Vaseline in a little tub today to try on the red marks.
I got that bad pimple several days ago, and twice a day I religiously applied that stupid BP and moisturizer, with stinging, burning eyes, even though it did NOTHING for the zit. I'm sticking with MAX CLARITY and that's final!
Fuck this shit. FUCK THIS SHIT. I want to rip my hair out. I have THREE pimples and they are not going away they're only getting worse! I keep going through cycles, I get a zit, it heals, another one pops up to replace it! AHHH! I still have MaxClarity products, I was clear on MC so I'm going back to that and if I can go two weeks without a zit I'm STICKING with it and returning Dan's shit!
The zits are all gone, and maybe it's just me but I think the red marks are looking better. So now I know, I need to stick with Dan's regimen, as much of a pain in the ass it is....I can't deny the effectiveness of his BP and face wash, Dan has really created some quality products. As for the moisturizer, I don't hate it so much anymore. I wish it didn't take forever to sink in but I could say the same thing about the BP. A few days ago I received an email saying it was almost time for my auto-ship kit to be charged and shipped. I went in and changed it to the larger, 16oz bottles. That should last me until I ship out in June.
What the hell is going on?? I developed three tiny whiteheads, so on Sunday night and Monday I used Witch hazel with moisturizer. Woke up this morning to a larger whitehead near my hairline and oily skin I haven't seen in years! I'm back on Dan's regimen. This is awful.
Aaahhhh. So I began using diluted apple cider vinegar and my Juice and Pore Perfecting Moisturizers, and by last night I had three pimples. One in the spot I popped a week ago, and two more on my right cheek. Granted, the ones on my right cheek are very, very tiny, but they're still there. So last night I did Dan's regimen again. I guess I have to stick with it? I need to get rid of these scars! I don't think the Aquaphor was breaking me out because I put it on all the scars all over my face and the pimples are so tiny. I might try this peel I found in the mall. If you buy it in stores it's $60-$150 but on Amazon it's $20.
Starting on Sunday night, due to extraneous conditions, I have not been able to do the Regimen in full. At most I've used the face wash. Otherwise, I've stuck to witch hazel twice a day, Juice moisturizer at night, and Pore Perfecting moisturizer during the day. And I like it! I like it better than the regimen. It's faster, less messy, my face feels better. I'm only going to use Dan's BP on my back. My skin is pimple-free. And whatever happened to those two pimples I popped according to the method detailed on this site? There's now a visible hole in them where I pricked them. Thanks a lot, Dan.
Now I know why everyone hates the new DK moisturizer so much. At the beginning of this week I started using two full finger lengths of BP. Very Quickly I had to up my moisturizer amount to two full pumps. Yesterday morning I woke up and the skin around my mouth was a flaky mess! AND, this may be related to my using the cleanser to remove eye makeup, but my eye skin is dry and wrinkly even though I'M ONLY TWENTY-ONE and have been carefully using the moisturizer as an under-eye cream while ensuring I'm not smearing BP up there. My right eye has looked like it's aged about ten years, there's a crease extending from the outer corner and the skin is red and irritated!
Yesterday my skin and eyes looked even worse, but I'm going to attribute this to the fact that I only got four hours of sleep the prior night. So for last night, I applied Aquaphor to my eye crinkles. I have been using Aquaphor on my lips at night for about five years, but it finally occurred to me that the same ingredient in vaseline is in Aquaphor (petroleum/petrolatum). I smeared a bit on the scars on my forehead and on my right cheek, and this morning my right cheek looked better and was smoother (as was my forehead) although the forehead scars didn't seem much different. I read on a message board that it took someone ten weeks for their scars to go away. I only have seventeen weeks until I ship out.
Yesterday morning I popped the pimple on my left cheek the "right" way. I took a thumbtack, sterilized it with a lighter, lightly pricked the area, and then squeezed with some toilet paper between my fingers and skin. I know the DK BP and cleanser are definitely affecting the pimple, so I'm pleased in that respect. I also discovered a small pimple on my left jawline that looks ripe for popping today.
Yesterday marked one full week of me using DK products. To commemorate this occasion my skin looked blotchy and began to break out slightly--one small pimple above my lip, another in the cesspool on the left side of my face, and the one remaining pimple near my right hairline. So last night I applied a finger and a half's worth of BP, and one and a half pumps of moisturizer, skipping the ACV. This morning my skin appeared much clearer and smoother, although all pimples were still present; however, the one above my lip seemed to get a bit better.
Now that I'm back at school I need to get on a more regular exercise schedule. This morning, I woke up and immediately did an Insanity workout. Those workouts can burn up to 1000 calories and make me sweat like crazy so they're great for eliminating toxins. I had great skin last time I did Insanity so I know the excess sweat won't make my face worse. Maybe it'll even improve things!
I didn't notice it as much the first few days, but I've slowly been increasing the BP amount used and my eyes have been BURNING every time! It's the strangest thing, and I don't recall reading anywhere on this site that burning eyes is a potential side effect. Last night I took extra special care to ensure that I wasn't getting any BP in or near my eyes, but still they burn and water! The moisturizer burns slightly when I apply it, but I don't mind that at all. A couple of days ago I exercised and perspired quite a bit on my face, and some of the moisturizer showed up above my eyebrow. I probably could have rubbed it back in but luckily I specifically timed my exercise so I could do the regimen right afterwards.
I also forgot to add that I'm taking vitamins. I take a women's multivitamin, fish oil, and a lysine supplement. I've taken these vitamins for over a year, started when my skin was good, so I'm not sure if they're actually helping me in that department. I thought I'd mention it because I noticed other people mentioned vitamins on their blogs.
I have a small pimple near my right hairline still, but it's nowhere near as bad as the ones I was getting a month ago. I'm confident the regimen will take care of it shortly. Also, today I purchased a lot of cotton balls and Stop & Shop brand Apple Cider Vinegar. Earlier this week I was applying my roommate's ACV to my wet face. Now, I'm going to wash my face, let it dry, apply ACV, let it dry, and then continue with the BP and moisturizer. I didn't notice much of a difference in my red marks when I was applying ACV to a wet face, as that was pretty much just diluting it, so hopefully this new method will be more effective. The red marks on my face are reminiscent of my senior year in high school. (And now I'm a senior in college, imagine that?) At least now I care enough to wear makeup to cover them up! Still they NEED TO GO.
On Sunday night I picked up my package of DK products from my mom's house and brought it to college with me. Today will be my second full day of using them. I cannot be effusive enough in my praise for this stuff! The wash is unlike any other face wash I've ever tried. It foams easily and, once dry, my skin looks and feels so soft and bright. The BP gel glides on smoothly and doesn't make my skin red or itchy. I'm attributing my lack of negative side effects to the fact that my skin is already accustomed to 10% BP, so my results may be different from yours if this is your first time. Even still, it goes on smooth like buttah. I also love the moisturizer. At first the yellow color was quite jarring to me, as ever other moisturizer I've had has been white or milky. But my skin is flake-free yet not greasy, so I'm impressed. I can't say whether this moisturizer is better than Dan's old one, because i have not used the old one. But I CAN say that this moisturizer is better than my Juice moisturizer, both in terms of cost and grease factor. I could only use the Juice one at night because it was on the heavier side, while Dan's moisturizer is perfect for both night and day. I have not experienced any flakes or tight or dry skin.
Yesterday I noticed a tiny tiny whitehead on my chin, and another small zit up my cheekbone near my hairline. So obviously I am going to be using Dan's stuff. Also, to get rid of the red marks, I'm implementing apple cider vinegar. After I wash my face, when it's still wet, I put some ACV directly on a cotton ball and apply it on my face. Once that dries I do the BP and then moisturizer. I think the red marks are fading. I have taken pictures, so after a week I'll re-take and see if there really has been a difference. I just wish I had half an hour to perform the regimen during BCT!
So all my acne is gone. I have no more facial zits and I haven't even started using Dan's products yet! I went on a school trip to Texas this past week, just got back to college yesterday. While I was there I ran out of Max Clarity so I used soap to wash my face and then applied AcneFree Terminator 10 twice daily because in the past it's worked on red marks. In the mornings I used Clean & Clear Pore Perfecting Moisturizer along with Maybelline 24-hour concealer and Bare Minerals Matte makeup. In the evenings I used the soap and BP with Juice Beauty Oil-Free Moisturizer. Today I'm supposed to drive to my mom's house to pick up some things, including my package of DK products. While my face is mostly smooth (some small bumps remain, they aren't pimples) I still have red marks! Last night, I used the Max Clarity foaming body wash along with lavender witch hazel and Juice moisturizer. The esthetician who gave me a facial during my cruise to Mexico recommended witch hazel and a moisturizer, which is what my roommate has been telling me to use anyway!
I have a theory as to why my face went crazy in November, but it's pretty personal so I'm not going to say it here. I will say that I believe my body has gotten it under control which is why the acne is gone. Should I use Dan's regimen still? Or stick with the witch hazel, which my friend said would help erase the marks? If anyone's reading this let me know what you think! I'm also planning on trying vaseline to get rid of the marks. I'll dab it on the one on my forehead and if it goes away I'll use it all over. The Army and makeup-free Basic Combat Training loom!
While the skin on my face only became acne-ridden shortly before my seventeenth birthday, I've suffered from bacne since I was fourteen at least. I can remember being fourteen at camp and getting ready for a toga party. We were only supposed to wear sheets as "togas", and my bacne was so bad I tried to cover it with concealer! When I was fifteen and had very long hair, I'd only wear a tank top if my hair was down to cover my back. As I got older I met more girls with bacne who weren't ashamed of wearing clothes that showed their backs, so I stopped caring as much. Then I discovered Neutrogena Body Acne Body Wash, (not the scrub) with salicylic acid, and my bacne is almost completely gone!
This morning my skin continued to shock me by not looking so horrible. Now I'm wondering if I should even use Dan's stuff when it all arrives Monday--what if it just makes everything worse because I'm changing my routine? Then again I still want to try it, I already paid for it and I want these marks GONE!
My acne.org stuff hasn't arrived but my skin seems to be clearing up from Max Clarity! I'm shocked, I was only using this stuff because I'm home from college and ran out of my normal 10% BP and didn't want to buy more since I have more tubes at college.
I bought MaxClarity in late November after reading through some of the pages of the MC thread on this website. Day one, it seemed to be clearing up my skin, but by day four I was breaking out worse than ever so I decided it wasn't strong enough and discontinued use. My skin steadily worsened.
One month later, I went on a cruise to Mexico and got a facial. The esthetician put a lot of stuff on my skin, and popped all my pimples. I had about ten pustules, I couldn't believe it! She administered an oxygen treatment as well. She told me to use witch hazel and a moisturizer. For the remainder of the cruise and until I ran out of the BP, I washed my face with Dial soap, used 10%BP, and in the morning, Clean and Clear Pore Perfecting Moisturizer with SPF 15 plus my cousin's Jane Iredale PurePressed foundation (we're the same color), and in the evening, Juice Beauty oil-free moisturizer (smells soo nice, but too heavy for day!). So that was the rest of December basically.
When I started with the MC again on about Dec 30, it appeared to be working the first day, and by day three I was starting to get more pimples. I had nothing else to use so I just continued with it, occasionally popping a pimple, and now the six or so remaining bumps are getting smaller and drying out!
Even though the pimples are smaller, I'm still plagued by red marks. Luckily I don't really have pitted acne scarring; once the marks go away I should have clear skin again. I have five months until I join the army, five months to achieve and maintain clear skin. I can do it!
Ever since September '10 my skin has slowly been getting worse. For almost two years, since December '08, my skin had been clear due to my twice daily routine of Clean & Clear Deep Action Cream Cleanser followed by AcneFree Terminator Ten (10% BP). If I had bad pimples, I'd incorporate 2% salicylic acid. I never used a moisturizer because I was afraid of breaking out.
All of a sudden, my regular mode of acne attack became too harsh for my skin. I bought an expensive moisturizer, tried MaxClarity, witch hazel, random products from different people. To my immense horror, my skin has been steadily worsening. I used to only get zits in an isolated section on my left lower cheek, adjacent to my muth. Now I have pimples all over both cheeks and even on my forehead.
After researching dan's method for several months, I've finally decided to commit to the time needed and I've ordered my kit. I expect it to arrive Monday. Clear skin, here I come!
