Just finished week 2. So far my face has been acting similarly to when I had a "clear spell." Basically I have the little tiny whiteheads on various places on my face, but the only cysts are two on my chin. My face looks more even colored.
Downsides, my face gets more and more dry every day. Its not super bad but it does get stiff if I don't moisturize well enough. My daily moisturizer/sunblock is not enough and my face feels almost worse after I put them on. My lips are super chapped and peeling badly, to the point where people can see. I bought the small tubes of Aquaphor and that seems to take care of the lips pretty well if I keep applying it. Burts bees doesn't really help all that much, it coats them but it doesn't solve the problem.
I noticed everything is dry except my nose which will not stop running!
p.s. when I say everything is dry, I mean EVERYTHING. My downstairs is painfully dry, and not just during sex. Of all the side affects I feel like this is one that should have been mentioned. Everyone said dry skin, I assumed on my face and whatnot but I suppose everyone was too embarrassed to say that their vagina was dry. At first I tried just putting the sex lube on it that we had but it was too thick and disgusting, so I went to the store and it turns out vagisil has a vaginal moisturizer for everyday use- not for just for sexual use. That seems to be working well so far.
I just finished my first week on Claravis at 20mg twice a day. I'm hesitant to assume this is a miracle drug although I haven't had any new cysts develop in the past week and the ones I had that literally have not gone away in years are starting to go down and feel like normal skin.
My first side effects kicked in on day three, with a little bit of dryness in my eyes and on my face. Also I had a bad experience with Ketchup- apparently the sensitivity has kicked in on my lips. After putting out the fire on my lips I went and stocked up on some of the recommended products for use while on accutane, mainly Chapstick.
I've also started using cetaphil face wash for sensative skin. I was skeptical at first cuz it doesn't foam or tingle or do any of the things I'm used to with my face washes but everything seems to be going well. I decided to wash with a gentle acne wash I had and it resulted in my skin peeling between my eyebrows and on my nostrils. Not like snakeskin type peeling but like light sunburn peeling.
Also I picked up some body lotion and Dove cream oil body wash last night. I needed the lotion for my hands because they are already dry from washing them a lot and the body wash was recommended for dry skin. Although my body isn't drying out yet I suspect it will with a higher dosage.
I think that's about it for this update- I'll have another for you in a week.
I am about to start my first blister pack of Claravis, the generic for Accutane.
Right now I have combination oily skin with cystic acne on my cheeks and chin. I also have the small pimples that come up almost instantly as white heads and go away fairly quickly and black heads.
Overall, my face is not as bad as it could be as I am on birth control and that has helped a lot. The reason I chose to go on Claravis is because the cystic acne I have is very painful, never fully goes away and scars whether I touch them or not. Even when my face is "clear," it still looks like I have a terrible break out.
I have tried everything from salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide face washes to antibiotics to diacneal and nothing clears up the cysts I get.
So far the only side effect- since I haven't taken a single pill yet- is when I tell people I'm going on accutane and they tell me that I'm stupid because it has so many side effects, and that I should try such and such treatment (which I've almost always tried). Those are the people who do not know anyone who has had the treatment and never had painful acne. The good news is that out of all the side effects, everyone I talk to in person that has used it can only remember the crossed out pregnant lady on the package.
I'll try to post once a week, for my sake. Logs like this are what helped me make my decision to go through with this and I hope that I help someone else out.
One more thing- I don't have insurance and I just paid $400.10usd for 60 20mg capsules after a discount program at a Walgreens in northern California.
