I know I haven't written in months but that's because I have had zero acne and zero complications. If I could be on this drug for the rest of my life, I would. I end accutane in 6 days and I'm honestly sad.
So let's get to acne stuff:
I haven't had an actual pimple in what seems like forever. I had one on my cheek and it was weird lol. No cysts, no breakouts on my body and I haven't been oily whatsoever.
I wash my face with a bar of soap or Neutrogena Morning Burst face wash. I do not use anything with salycic (or however you spell it) acid or any acne fighters. I lotion my face with CeraVe moistuerizer because my face is really dry after a shower. My derm just gave me a million samples of it so I never actually had to buy it.
I'm used to bringing aquaphor with me wherever I go, it's in every car/bathroom/friends bags. I just throw one in there because I always need it. I'm so used to it now though it's apart of me.
(TMI about to be explained lol) During Christmas (month 4) I had trouble going to the bathroom (bowel movements) and I started to bleed a little. I told my doc about it and he explained to drink more water and take fiber and stool softeners. Now I'm fine and don't have any pain/bleeding.
For month 5 my doc put me from 60 to 80mg a day and my skin started to really rash and dry out. I told him about it and he said to only take 1 pill a day (40mg) so I did that but I felt like I was giving up. I decided to toughen it out and for month 6 I'm on 80mg and am perfectly fine.
One thing that I've noticed is that my hair is starting to feel thin, I've always had really thick hair but since accutane my hair has felt dry, only towards the end though. I've gotten it cut and it feels alot better though.
So last thing to say about accutane is getting your eyebrows waxed. So I was feeling courageous and thought my skin was getting used to it, or something BUT WARNING don't do it. I had the craziest looking face. My friends said it looked like I was wearing a superhero mask around my face. I had to sleep in Neosporin. It scabbed, looked disgusting and peeled like a mofo. DO NOT DO IT. I wore big sunglasses for 5 days lol. If you do do it though, don't worry it goes away. Use plenty of neoporin, don't touch it, and get some big sunglasses.
All in all, I've had the best experience on Accutane. I'm going to miss being on it, but hopefully I stay dry & my acne never comes back. I can live with putting aquaphor on every 30 mintues, but I don't want to live with acne ever again.
Thanks to all that followed me on my Journey even though I haven't written in so long, Good luck to everyone that reads this down the road and I hope this drug works as well for you as it did for me. It's a life changer.
I know I'm writing 2 days early but I just have alot to say lol
So I did a lot of changing what I put on my face, how I wash my face and just everyday tasks.
Currently I have not one pimple on my face (knock on wood, oh jeez lol) I used to wash my face with Dove plus moisturizer, NO GOOD! Not for my face. My boyfriend had Irish Spring bar soap in the shower and I used it for a few days and I have not one more cyst. I have had I think 3 small whiteheads in the last 2 weeks. I do not wash my face at night anymore and I also DO NOT use any on the spot acne treatment. I was using Neutrogena Benzoyl that is "recommended" here, but DON'T on accutane, atleast if you have the same skin as me (oily). If I do have a spot that I feel coming, I put a tiny dab of the Proactiv Face Mask and keep it on there overnight. My derm gave me Cerave PM moisturizer that I use every morning (yes I am aware that it says PM, and I use it in the morning.. it still works just fine.) I put it sparingly on my chin and upperlip, where ever it feels or looks dry/cracky. I'm not sure if it's from my derm lowering my dose 20mg a day or if its from my soap but I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing lol. I definitely know that my chin is SO much better now because of the dosage. I just remember how it felt like a big scap. Cetaphil didn't do anything for my face, the cream or the lotion.
I'm still having joint aches. I was doing some flips in the grass (I used to cheer for college) and my ankles HURT afterwards. I can deal with the aches sometimes, I am just used to them. Somedays are worse than others though. I can't go an hour without putting aquaphor on. I have one everywhere I go, in my car, at work, the bathroom, my bedroom. I still wash my hair every other day. I use Tresemme, it has protein in it and I heard that helps your hair from falling out. (I don't know it could be a lie, but who knows lol) I use Jergens lotion in the morning because my skin looks dry in the morning.
All in all:
I'm really happy with where I am at right now. 30mg in the morning and 30mg at night so 60mg a day, I think thats where I should be. My face isn't oily, and my hair isn't oily. I can go outside without makeup on and feel like people are looking at ME and not my acne. I think I am going to do a month session of tanning (thanksgiving, christmas, newyears) they're all in the same time frame. If my skin starts to react then I'll stop immediately, but I think that it's doing really well. I'll write in a week!
Oh my goodness! Sorry it's been so long since I've blogged. Between Halloween and school I haven't been able to get on here.
So! Since the last time, I went to the derm and he changed my dosage and gave me this prescription moisturizer to put on my chin because it was so incredibly dry. I got an airbrush tan before halloween because I didn't want to risk it being in the UV light. It came out good but I needed that moisturizer because the tan on my face went away pretty quick because it was so dry.
My acne has been steady.. I've had a few cysts come and go and I have at least one pimple on my face a day. It's been SO much better though. My face is more on the dry side but it's helping with the acne. Right now I just have one pimple on my chin. Scars are lingering around longer than normal too. They are really red and dry.
My side effects are the same. The doc dropped my prescription down to 60mg a day instead of 80. The muscle aches are still there (but much less severe) and my skin it still dry but so much better. I feel more comfortable at this mg. I still wash my hair every other day, if I wash it like 3 days in a row my scalp gets so itchy.
Other than that, I've just been living normally. Promise I'll write next week!
I can't believe it's been 4 weeks already. Let's get right to it.
Cysts! My face has been controlled with cysts all around my chin. As soon as one goes away another one pops up. And not just cysts, but nodules. The ones that never go away. I layed out in the sun hoping that it'll blend in with a tan face and it has. No surprise there. I haven't had any papules or white heads lately so I think thats a plus. The old pimples though are still red. They're healed but you can really see where they were. Acne is starting to clear, so let's hope it's only up from here!
My chin is still really dry and I'm hoping that it's not adding to the cysts. I put Cetaphil moisturizer on every morning but by noon its dry and cracky again. I don't want to keep adding moisturizer on every few hours though. Other than that my face isn't dry anywhere else.
Now my body is starting to show effects. I got like a rough eczema patch on my forearm and the top of my hand. They aren't itchy, just rough, dry patch. I put hydrocortizone cream on it to combat it but it's still hanging around.
My hair usually would be greasy by the end of the day but not anymore So I wash my hair every other day now, which is awesome and saves alot of time.
My muscles aren't sore anymore, just dry skin. I see the derm in 4 days, we'll see how everything is. Sorry this is so boring and non-informative lol. This week went by so quick nothing excited happened
It is week three and I am seeing the effects drastically. I started the week with some regular small pimples, like the last two weeks. But then yesterday I was having like a mental breakdown because my face was awful.
So let's start with acne:
I had a huge cyst on my head that was SO RED. My chin was awful and I had like scabby zits and two big cysts on my chin. Everything was so red and inflamed. So I HAD to get away from the mirror! I sat outside in the sun and thought, you know I just need to calm down and let my face heal because I knew I was just going to overreact more! I layed in the sun for about two and half hours and got some nice color. It helped blend my other acne in so I didn't look too spotty. My mom said I should put some hydrocortizone cream on where my pimples are to help the inflammation go down. I went to the store picked up a few things (I'll get to the other items in the next part) and put the hydrocortizone. I woke up this morning with my face looking SO MUCH better and my cysts finally drained.
Okay, so next is symptoms:
Everything is just like week two, but just amplified. Dryer lips, dryer face, dryer body, and muscle aches. My knees have started to hurt when I walk to much. I went to Universal Studios for the weekend with my hubby and started to feel my ankles and knees just aching.
My lips are SO dry, but last night as I was having a mental breakdown because of my face I came across my boyfriends ointment which was the same thing as Aquaphor! I immediately put it on my lips and it instantly felt better. Thank goodness! I woke up this morning and my lips were finally kissable! lol *
So last night when I was getting hydrocortizone for my nastly cyst, I also picked up the cetpahil moisturizing CREAM! I had the lotion and it did nothing. I have a really oily face so I am so worried about putting moisturizer on my face. But the cream feels so good! My chin is so dry it HURTS. Last night I put on the cream and I feel alot better. I'm so glad I'm finding things that help me out.
Last but not least
I go for my bloodwork next week then the derm on the 26th (11 days) I'm on 80mg a day. I weigh 122lbs and I think it's way to high for me, especially for being my first month..
How much did everyone else start at? I feel like my symptoms wouldn't be so sucky if I was on a lower dose.
So that's it. Week three is finished I can't wait until no more pimples! SERIOUSLY!
(ps everytime I write that I say it like "xoxo gossip girl" and it makes me laugh)
Hey followers It has officially been 2 weeks.
Let's start off with acne:
I had ONE day this week where my face was clear! I was pumped but I wish there was more than one day ya know? Here's background why I think I was clear for a day. BIRTH CONTROL! The week I started Accutane I was on my period (yeahyeah TMI I know) but it's true. This Sunday I started my new pill pack and on Tuesday my face looked really good. Now it's Friday, sad to say that Acne is still on my forehead and cysts are popping up around my chin. I still have small 'under the skin' pimples on my forehead, but real large pimples on my chin. I'm not touching them AT ALL because Halloween is coming soon and it's taking forever for my pimples (or any cuts or scrapes) to heal. So I'm blaming this breakout on the 'initial breakout' that comes with Accutane. I'm trusting it's working..
Now on to side effects:
DRY DRY DRY LIPS! Oh my goodness. Both sides of my mouth are TORN. Bleeding, cracked YUCK. I have used 6 different lip therapys. I'm going to go out and get aquaphor because thats the only one I haven't tried.
I have to put moisturizer on my face every morning. I use Cetaphil moisturizer. After I get out of the shower I can't even smile without putting a moisturzer on my face, it feels so tight. It's hard to put any powder on my face though because the Cetaphil kinda gives my face a rough feeling. I think I'm going to switch moisturizers. Maybe one with a tanner in it because I am getting SO PALE! No sun sucks. Any one know a good moisturizer?
My body is just starting to show dry skin on my arms. I'm pretty good with moisturzing my body but I've noticed that I have to do it a lot more.
My scalp!! Is so itchy. It just started like two days ago. I haven't seen any dandriff flakes or anything but I feel like I'm going to. I'm going to start using Selsin Blue or Head and Shoulders I think, just as a precautionary. I know this stuff can make your hair fall out and noo way that is not happening to me lol.
Last thing is my muscles. I've gotten used to it, because they're not that bad. I still workout frequently so I think that is helping, and stretch stretch stretch! After I stretch or do yoga I feel so much better! My chest and lower back are still what hurts and are pretty sore. After I'm laying or doing abs my back and chest hurt pretty bad. Its like I was 'working out' sore though.
Well I think that's it! Until next time!
PS My boyfriend is taking me to Halloween Horror nights tomorrow (Be jealous)
So I have officially been on Accutane for a week!
My acne is drier. I had a cyst come on my chin for 2 days but not it has gone down alot. My smaller whiteheads though, I feel like they're not healing. They turn into a scab and its just stubborn and doesn't heal I might put some neosporin on it to help out.
My face has been really dry around my chin but not my forehead. So I use Cetaphil Moisturizer. Not a lot because I still use some powder foundation and it's a little sticky, but enough for the dry spots to be covered. At night I use Neutrogena On The Spot cream on any forming pimples.
My lips are so dry! I put so much chapstick on its like my cell phone, I always have it! My derm said it'll be about every 4 hours to apply more and he was so right. I can't even smile if I don't have any on.
Other side effects I have been having are aching muscles. My sternum is sore if I'm in an awkward position. When I'm laying on my stomach it's awful. My lower back aches a little too. I worked out last night for the first time being on accutane but I felt fine. I can deal with the little muscle aches.
Other than that I'm living my normal life I'll update next week!
PS I never said how much I take
I take 40mg in the morning and 40mg at night
So I wanted to do this blog because I know I searched through Acne.org and read everyone's Accutane blogs. I wanted to know EVERYTHING, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
Background: I had acne since I started middle school. It's was pretty moderate throughout middle/high school, just regular high school acne is what I put it off as. Well my senior year of high school I started to get really painful cysts and they continued and got worse throughout college. I'm on my third year of college and finally decided to go to the derm. I was put on everything. I had Differin, Atralin, Acanya, Solodyn and did proactiv for what seemed like forever. I was on all that junk for 5 months and it did nothing but clear some of my white heads. I finally brought up Accutane to my doc and he said fine. So here we are
I did bloodwork/pregnancy test and I've got Claravis. (same thing as Accutane)
Day 1 - I took it at night because I didn't get my prescription until late afternoon. I went to work and felt a little sleepy and a little nauseous. Currently I havea cyst on my forehead, a few pimples on my chin and many pimples on my forehead.
Day 2 -Little bit of a headache, but no issues. I'm feeling pretty good and my chin seems like its drying some. Forehead and cyst still the same though.
I'm still nervous on what to take the accutane with.. It says food and milk so I'm taking it and eating a lot afterwards to make sure it absorbs.
Well until next time!
