And So It Begins...

So, I finally did it. The thing I should have done a year ago or more. I swallowed my pride and went to see the dermatologist about my acne. I’m 21 now, and have been struggling with moderate and very persistent acne for about the past 4 years, probably since I started university. Those tricksy pimples just won’t let up! In my high school years I was lucky enough to only ever have the odd teenage spot – definitely not what I’d call acne. However, it’s come to the point where I’m at the end of my tether, and all but demanded a Roaccutane prescription from my dermatologist. Thank the heavens I have an uncle who is a doctor and could refer me to a dermatologist who squeezed me in at last minute – otherwise I would have had to wait 4 months for an appointment…I don’t think I could have taken it! I’m also lucky enough to have an understanding family and super duper boyfriend who of course despite all my insecurities tells me all the time how beautiful I am. And I want to believe him! A short taster of what I’ve tried so far… Acne “clearing†lotions and potions (yeah, right) from Clearasil, Garnier, Neutrogena, Biore, Nivea etc… Benzoyl Peroxide (Benzac AC and Acne.org 2.5%) Products with AHA (including Acne.org) Yasmin (Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill) Akamin (Minomycin/Minocycline) Differin/Adapalene And no, I never have tried Proactiv. I guess the cynic in me always thought it would turn out to be a lot of good marketing and a big waste of money! The most effective treatments for me so far have been the Benzoyl peroxide and AHA. The antibiotic worked amazingly for a couple of months before losing effectiveness Yasmin did absolutely nothing for me …possibly even worsened the condition. What’s happening now? I’ve been put on the lowest dose of 20mg/day for 1 month, and will then change to 40mg/day. The derm says the low dose should reduce the severity of the side effects. FYI, I’m 180cm (5′11″) tall and weigh 63kg (139lb), so the maximum I’d be looking at is 40mg/day, seeing as the derm is a fan of low dosage. Looks like I’m in for the long haul, guys! I’m currently halfway through my first week of this adventure, and I’ll post at the end of the week with pictures and updates. Dreading that initial flare-up! If I can get anything out of this, I want to be able to go out in public makeup free (heck, even in front of my family) wear my hair up instead of covering my face go to the beach without worrying about how my skin looks in the bright light and salty water wash my face in the middle of the day! Wish me luck… Maeve89
