So a brief summary of my acne story and how I got here to the accutane train… I’ve had acne since I can remember, probably about 12 years old or so; it’s in the family history on both sides although how I got it this severe I will never know! It’s always been a pretty prominent presence in my life I’ve never not had acne but it’s always been controllable by over the counter products or proactiv, retin A, differin, tetracycline, tazorac etc… and yes I have been on all of those products in my lifetime! I’ve gotten older and had my babies and I know skin and hormones can change but in the last year or so my acne has been out of control! I went back to the dermatologist a year ago and started all the regular routines of treatments that had worked in the past and like most of you they worked for a brief time and then it was like my skin said too bad for you and became resistant! I’m 33 now and have been under dermatology care for over a year now and my acne is worse than ever! I’m sure you all know how humiliating, frustrating, annoying and discouraging this is especially as an adult in a professional job…. At this age you’re hoping to not have to spackle on the coverup for half an hour just so you can go to work presentable…. So my derm suggested accutane which I had heard of but was hesitant about… needless to say I am far more desperate and at the end of my rope than I am nervous about the side effects so I got all my crap together and picked up my prescription and here I am! I had read many reviews and blogs and decided I wanted to put mine out there as well because I found them helpful and some encouraging and I would love to be able to do that for someone else who’s life has been put on hold by severe acne and who is questioning if they should try accutane. I’ll log on and post as frequently as I can and please feel free to comment or ask questions. As a starting point I give you my completely humiliating before pictures because without those we can’t measure the progress much!
I couldn't figure out how to just upload a picture on here! You can't just click on browse and upload the pic from your computer apparently! Frustrating! Anyhow I think it's important to see pics along the way to document the success and progress of the product so if anyone would like to see my horrible starting off pics just let me know and I will email them to you!
So in actuality this is my 3rd day on the pills not my first but I wanted to post a little background as I did in my previous post. Not much to report. I’m more nervous about the standard side effects than I am the major ones. The major product side effects are rare and I figure I just really watch myself and listen to my body and if something seems out of the norm I can always stop the pills. I’m excited about what this might finally do for me and my skin even though I know I will have to get through the first month of skin drama. I have super oily skin by nature so the excessive dryness will be such a change for me and the dreaded “it gets worse before it gets better breakouts†that makes me a little nervous I’m not gonna lie but in all reality my acne is pretty high on the severity scale anyways so I think I can handle what might be coming at me and I just have to remember it’s temporary. At this point I wake up with anywhere from 2-6 new breakouts everyday! And I mean everyday! So how much worse can it really get for me…. Today I’m starting to feel the chemical interaction for the first time though. The first 2 days I didn’t notice a thing. Today I just finished my dose for the 3rd day (I’m on 60 mg a day) and my entire head and face is pretty itchy! I can feel my skin tightening and getting drier which I’m sure is causing the tingling and itching. The transition from ridiculously oily to completely dry is definitely starting to kick in and the urge to scratch is pretty hard to ignore. I can’t wait to leave work and get this makeup off and lotion my face to see if I can get the itch to go away but other than that there’s nothing else noticeable going on. I’m sure the dryness will continue to get worse but I say hey bring it on I know it will balance out in a few weeks and I’ll take dryness over this obsessive acne any day!
So here I am on day 5 and I have to say I'm a bit suprised at the lack of dryness. A few days back I could feel the tightening of my skin and the itchiness was pretty severe and annoying but now today the itchiness has subsided to pretty tolerable and there are still parts of my forehead and chin that are quite oily. Having read that something like 90% of acne causing bacteria lives in the oil glands I am hoping that accutane will not fail me as well like everything else has! My face is still pretty actively breaking out but it's hard to tell if it's acutally breaking out worse than normal as some people report because it was soooo bad to begin with and daily breakouts were just part of my daily life.... More to come later and hopefully the side effects continue to be minimal for me!
