Treatment: Solodyne 65mg / day Ziana Gel PM Apple Cider Vinegar AM (for PIH) Tetrinoin Gel AM Cetaphil Moisturizing Cleanser Cetaphil Moisturizing Sunblock Symptoms: None; moderate breakout; headaches have subsided Experience: Up until the beginning of week four, I had not broken out since the beginning of my new treatment. Unfortunately, I did experience a moderate breakout during week four. Two inflammed pimples, one on my cheek bone and the other on my jawline. I've also been getting very small whiteheads on my forehead and underneath my jawlin. From past experiences with retinoids, I'm willing to bet the whiteheads are a result of the Ziana finally purging my skin. As for the two larger blemishes, I'm really not sure, but they did go down pretty quickly. I'm still suffering from some pretty bad PIH, so I've added ACV to my AM regime. Doing yoga more often and working out to a sweat in order to clear pores (and tightened butt ). Overall, I'm not dissapointed and believe that the breakout was necessary to cleanse my skin. I'm also due for my "visit" soon, so I'm sure that has something do to with it. My main concern is the PIH. I pushed my derm appointment to July 2, so then I will ask for a treatment for PIH and possibly an increased dosage of Solodyne since my body seems to be tolerating it well. As for Ziana, I'm sticking with it for 12 weeks as suggested. I'm purging now, but its not that bad really.
Treatment: Solodyne 65mg / day Ziana Gel PM Tetrinoin Gel AM Cetaphil Moisturizing Cleanser Cetaphil Moisturizing Sunblock Symptoms: Headaches, occassional but harsh - could possibly be intracranial swelling which is a side effect. Itchy scalp - may not be related. Experience: By week three, 90% of imflammed acne has completely subsided. I have not had a large pustule or cyst come up since starting Solodyne treatment. I only have small, typical blemishes that fade away rather quickly (sometimes overnight). I think this type of breaking out is due to Ziana Gel, which is purging dirt and oil out of my pores. Still, it has not caused a notable breakout and overall my skin looks healthier and the PIH is slowly fading with the use of Ziana. I really like Ziana and will use as long as it remains effective. If I keep moving in this direction, I don't see me having to go on Accutane and will continue using Solodyne for three months before my derm weens me off of it. The side effects are not considerable compared to the effectiveness of Solodyne; although I loathe headaches.
Regime 65mg Solodyn Ziana Gel PM Aczone AM Cetaphil Gentle Cleaner Cetaphil Moisturizer spf 50 Symptoms: Slight headache from time to time, but not extreme. Usually subsides when I drink alot of water. Experience: 9 days since I switched to Solodyn treatment. No new blemishes. The ones I had are almost complete gone; although I have very bad PIH. Based on past experience, the PIH will probably take several months to fade and up to a year to completely go away. My skin has only gotten better with the new regime. I really like the Ziana Gel. It does not irritate my sking whatsoever. As for Aczone, it doesn't irritate, but does make my skin very oily by late afternoon. I read oiliness was a side effect that will dissapear with time. All in all I'm very happy with this regime and three more weeks in this direction will probably void me of Accutane. Fingers crosed.
Due to an insurance change, I saw a new dermatologist on 5/7/2010. She advised that Spironolactone should NEVER cause an initial breakout as sizable as mine and also noted the possibilty that I may be immune to doxycycline since I've taken it before. She had me stop the Spiro/Doxy regime immediately. My new treatment will last 30 days until next evaluation. If my condition plateaus or worsens, then accutane it is. New Treatment as of 5/7/10 65mg Solodyne / day Ziana Topical (Clindamycin/Tretrinoin) PM Aczone Topical (Dapsone gel) PM Cleanse AM & PM with Cetaphil for sensitve skin Moisturize with Cetaphil lotion 50spf Okay, you'll probably think that four days isn't enough to tell a difference, but ever since I stopped the Spiro and started the Solodyn, I haven't had one new blemish. For the two weeks that I took Spiro, I got a new one or two each day. After starting the new regime, the inflammed pustules and papules have begun drying up and are going down fast. Redness still remains, but is better and more easily covered with mineral powder. For the first time in my history of dealing with acne, the topicals I am using are NOT breaking me out or drying my skin. Both Ziana and Aczone have a nice consistency and absorb well. The Cetaphil cleanser and moisturizer have already become a bathroom staple! So far so good. I will continue to update on a weekly basis now. Here's hoping I don't have to go on accutane!
I began taking Spironolactone approx two weeks ago, 50mg per day in the AM. Accompanied by 100mg Doxyclycline per day and a medicated nightly topical. Symptoms: Initial breakout, frequent urination, cloudiness Experience: Upon starting this medication, I began to breakout almost immediately. Of course, I am taking Doxy and using Epiduo at night. I started Spiro with cystic acne on right side of chin and jawline closest to mouth. No acne on right cheek, entire left side of face, forehead, neck, chest or back. I'd say I had moderate adult acne. Since starting medications, face has broken out severly on right side cheek, inflammed pustules mostly. Cysts on right chin and jawline are dimishing though. I have one inflammed pustule on the right cheek (rare) and no acne formed on my forehead, neck, chest or back. The acne I'm experiencing is painful, surfaces quickly leaving red spots behind. Going back to the dermatologist to assess this breakout - which is quite considerable and definately the worst I've ever experienced.
