Pros increased clarity
fewer pimples
less leukonychia
Cons infrequent nausea (take w/ meals)
remembering to take
Bottom line i have also found that zinc helps considerably, but does not eliminate, my acne. i won't repeat what everyone else has already said, but it's definitely worth a try. also try the picolinate formulation, as this has increased bioavailability.

also, an fyi for any white people out there w/ IBS-like symptoms and a suspected zinc deficiency...talk to your doctor about getting tested for celiac disease. it's the most underdiagnosed GI disease (almost exclusively in whites, esp northern european ancestry), and can cause all sorts of malabsorption problems including zinc. symptoms are usually fairly mild, so that vast majority of people who have it don't know it.

Pros cheap !
reduces redness
natural
Cons so far i don't think there are any though some people experienced nausea i feel that its best to take zinc after a hearty meal.
Bottom line I've been suffering from moderate acne since I was around 14. High school had been hell since having acne made me unsociable around people, so yeah it was tough.

My mom brought me to a dermatologist and he told me that the root cause was hormonal imbalance. He mentioned something about male hormones which was weird because I'm a female, how could I have traces of male hormones? And so he prescribed me with antibiotics and benzac, which is a topical cream that fights acne bacteria.

I was clear for maybe a year and then after i stopped taking the pills, my acne flared up again. It was horrible, with the scars and everything. I just found out about the zinc tablets through online reviews. So i got myself a bottle and i have been taking 1 tabet of 50mg chelated zinc after dinner for a week now. I feel that my acne is healing alot faster and my skin is feeling more healthy and supple. Besides, my skin is also less oily than it used to be. Ive always had greasy skin even if i washed my face 2 times a day and it bugged me!

Overall, i think all this while i had zinc deficiency which led to hormonal imbalance. That was most probably the main cause that contributed to my acne. So I highly recommend everyone who is seeking for a remedy to try it out! :)

Pros I don't really think there's any.
Cons - Makes you feel woozy.
- Made me grow hair on my torso!!!!
- Waste of time.
Bottom line I totally brought the hype of supplementing with Zinc because everyone on this website seems to advocate its usage.
After a few weeks of taking it, I started growing hair on my torso!!! AND it made me skip my period!

Not worth it. Please please don't self-diagnose yourself if you are deficient in anything. Talk to your doctor--- the one person who actually KNOWS/STUDIED/HAS EXPERIENCE with the human body. Thus, could tell you what your real options are!!!

Pros cheap, natural and really seems to work.
Cons takes a while to work
Bottom line I struggled with acne on and off from the minute I started working at 17 until about 6 months ago – at the age of 32. The only thing which would get rid of it was Roaccutane and then taking the contraceptive pill to keep it at bay. Due to a health problem I had to come off the pill over 2 years ago, and my skin went crazy, another dose of Roaccutane later it cleared up again, but the effects started to wear off after about 3 months. Not wanting to take any more meds for it, I asked my dermatologist about taking zinc, and he basically said it was a waste of time. I started to take it anyway, at first a large dose – around 100mg then gradually over a few months down to one 15mg tablet every day, my skin has been totally clear for 6 months now, and thats without any medication, just a zinc tablet and my normal routine of using Simple skin products, drinking lots of water and taking a multivit each day. It doesn’t happen overnight, but stick with it. I don’t know whether it was the zinc, or whether the acne has just ‘switched off’ as my dermatologist said it eventually would, but I would recommend anyone to try it, it’s even made my skin much less shiny which used to bug me.

Basically don’t give up hope, you’ll find something which works, I thought I had tried everything and was sick of putting medication in my body, I’m starting to think that maybe I was just zinc deficient for all those years as the results have been so dramatic and seem to have permanently sorted it.

Good luck everyone.

Pros Excellent way to prevent breakouts
Cons Somewhat nausea
Bottom line For the past 2 weeks I've been using 50mg of Zinc with 400mg of Chronium and I am SIMPLY AMAZED!

I am a 34 year old African American woman who has suffered from acne for over 15 years! Plus I've been on everything accept accutane (which I refused to ever try). Now my skin has finally stopped breaking out and has started clearing up. Wish I would have learned about the powerful effects of Zinc and Chronium years ago! Plus Chronium is good for weight loss.

Pros Cheap
Easy to find
Works well
Inflammation/Painful acne clears within a day or two
Cons Upset stomach
Sometimes severe nausea
Many different kinds, some not as effective
(I'm taking Zinc Gluconate 50mg)
Bottom line This stuff is amazing! I'm in my early twenties and have long suffered with serious acne problems. My adult acne has been concentrated on my cheeks and temples, and I read that Zinc is particularly effective at treating the redness and inflammation in this area of the face. I've only been taking it a few days, but it is already working.

The only problem is that it can cause nausea. I've eaten it with dinner everyday, but tonight had serious nausea. I did some research, and it seems that certain foods high in calcium can cause the nausea from zinc - things like pop especially, and I had some soda earlier for the first time in a while, so maybe that's the cause.

Pros Noticeable decrease in acne and severity of acne.
Inexpensive and easy
Cons remembering to take it consistently
Bottom line I've been taking 50mg of chelated zinc daily on and off for about 5 months. I noticed in less than a week my skin felt healthier and less inflamed. It took about a month to realize that my skin hadn't had any severe breakouts and was starting to look more clear. I've always had a really hard time with remembering to take supplements or meds so I kind of got lazy and forgetful for a while and noticed my skin get more bumpy again and got a couple cysts on my cheeks. Starting taking it again daily and it's clearing up again. I highly recommend this to anyone suffering with acne. It hasn't cured me 100% but I'm still trying to tweek the dosage and try taking twice a day to see if that yields even better results so it may be. Also for the people who have tried it without good results, I wonder if it had anything to do with the brand, form or any possible additives in the supplement. It works so well for so many people it would be worth trying a few kinds. Just sayin.

happy from clear skin

Pros when taken in doses of 30 mg twice daily in combo with birth control and 50 mg/day spironolactone, has cleared or significantly reduced the size of active pimples overnight or within a couple of days, ultimately clearing them within three days, max
Cons not sure if it is enough on its own to clear acne; also, not sure how effective zinc is on cystic acne, but likely will help due to anti-inflammatory properties
Bottom line initially, I was able to control my moderate cystic acne with birth control; then, when I went off b.c. (not realizing it had been keeping my skin clear), the acne came back and would not respond to b.c., alone; next, i eradicated my acne using a combo of b.c. & antibiotics (Bactrim), but decided I should go off the a.b.'s after 5 months had passed to avoid possible damage to my immune system/liver/kidneys; before discontinuing the a.b.'s, though, I obtained an Rx for spironolactone (anti-androgen drug for hormonal acne), and after a cpl mo.s of both, I went off the antibiotics and was able to maintain 100% clear skin for almost 3 mo.s; around the end of the 3rd mo., began getting small pimples here and there and took a.b.'s (Bactrim) for 1 wk to clear them; then read about zinc and decided to increase my 30 mg daily dosage to 60 mg whenever i saw a new zit. this worked very well on the little pimples that were appearing on occasion. thus, instead of increasing my spiro dosage (which was not preferable due to diuretic and other more serious potential side effects) or continuing harmful antibiotics, i have been able to prevent/effectively treat any zits I now get with increased intake of zinc. : ) i do not suggest taking more than 60 mg (one 30 mg capsule of Twin Lab chelated zinc twice) daily, as it can be toxic to humans if taken in higher quantities. also, do not take it on an empty stomach, or you may make yourself nauseous

Pros definitely has been working, i take 50 mg of zinc picolate daily. Reduces active acne and post red marks
Cons some people say upset stomach, but just take it with food and you'll be all set
Bottom line Listen i tried everything, and recently i had broke out badly after the summer and before that i had no pimples whatsoever. The breakout literally lasted about 2 months, and i tried every product with little success. I finally tried zinc, and i haven't had a new pimple since trying it and my old ones seem to be fading fast. I'm telling you if you are using topicals or natural remedies and still aren't seeing great results, you should definitely add a zinc supplement to your diet. The problem with my acne is it takes awhile to heal and stays red but not inflamed, and i definitely think zinc is speeding up the healing process. Worst case scenario it doesn't work for you and you stop taking it, but i doubt that will happen for most people. Give it a try!
