What's up with this regimen?
For years I have experimented with every conceivable over-the-counter and prescription acne treatment, including Retin-A, antibiotics, Cleocin-T, sulfur, and several others. Some cleared me up a little bit, but never a very noticeable difference. The one thing that always seemed to work was benzoyl peroxide, the key ingredient in the over-the-counter medications like Oxy, Clearasil, or Neutrogena On-The-Spot Acne Treatment (my personal favorite). Although benzoyl peroxide worked better than the other medications I had tried, it still did not work well enough. I now know why. I didn't use enough of it.
I finally found a routine that cleared me up about four years ago. I was astonished and elated to find my skin clear and decided to share my success on the internet. My current regimen works remarkably well. It is also simple, effective, and inexpensive. I encourage anyone with moderate to light acne to try it. If the regimen was an equation it would look something like this:
|
Gentle
Cleansing + a Benzoyl Peroxide assault = Clear Skin.

I have conducted research in many books, medical manuals, and dermatology journals in an attempt to understand why my regimen is so effective. The success of my regimen can be boiled down to the two facts that:
| 1. Acne is bacteria (P.Acnes) growing in a plugged follicle. Benzoyl peroxide medication kills P. Acnes well. Benzoyl peroxide first saw use in the 1930's, and remains a mainstay of acne treatment because it has proven itself to work well. To this day, benzoyl peroxide actually kills P. Acnes better than any other medication on the market. What I found is that you simply have to use enough of it. Smear a bunch of it on and you will start clearing up. Sounds simple and it is. Unlike other prescription medications, your skin will not get worse before it gets better on benzoyl peroxide. You should see immediate improvements, one to two weeks at most. Many people report dramatic improvements within days. Also, unlike antibiotics used in the treatment of acne, it is impossible for your skin to grow accustomed to benzoyl peroxide. If it works at first, it will always work. Benzoyl peroxide helps prevent future breakouts, so it is important that you keep using it until you grow out of your acne problem. |
| 2. Irritation of the skin can aggravate acne, and should be avoided if possible. The exact science of how acne is formed is not known. It is known, however, that irritation can make it worse. As long as you're not picking at your face, scrubbing it with a harsh washcloth, or otherwise irritating it, your skin is primed for benzoyl peroxide to kill the bacteria and leave you clear once and for all. Because an effective acne regimen requires a non-irritated face, if your skin is already irritated from the medication you are currently using, it may be a good idea to give your skin a few days to get back to normal before embarking on this regimen. |
