I took it for the last year of high school. It worked moderately well for me. Of course, you have to make sure not to eat or drink within the alotted amount of time when taking the pill, otherwise it dillutes the effect (not to mention, gives you a hell of a stomach ache). As said before, the effect differs from person to person.
I stopped taking the pill when I left for BMT in the Air Force. After a week my skin was clear of everything, even blackheads. I haven't had any problems since.
It turned out that my diet was a huge cause of the problem. Fast food is fine, but just make sure the ratio of wholesome food to junk food is greater in any given day. Try to stay away from caffeine.
Also, clean your sheets once, if not twice a week with a small amount of bleach. That's very important. Shower before bed, as well. Anti-bacterial liquid soap that doesn't clog the poors (Dial's good). I prefer the plastic scrubs as they seem to work the best. Cloth towels tend to gather bacteria quickly.
One last key solution: hand sanitizer. Keep a little bottle of it in your pocket and use it often throughout the day. Thus, when you scratch your face or eat, you're not migrating bacteria from whatever you've touched recently.
My acne was pretty damn bad before the lifestyle change. I was hygenic, but not enough. Some have to be more hygenic than others to curb acne problems.

Tetracycline is not a miracle drug; it is a general anti-biotic used to treat many ailments. I was also fortunate enough to have a body chemistry that reacted well to this drug, and in a matter of 2 months my acne stopped in its tracks. 7 years later, I am in my 20s and acne starts back up. I'm currently back on it and it has been 2 months, but progress isn't as effective as it was my first time.
I am prescribed 250mg pills and instructed to take 2 every day, one in the morning, one at night. The person taking 4 pills in one sitting is exposure his/her health to danger. They come in heavier/higher dosages, so one does not have to take multiple pills. I think that person was being adventurous. If you want a higher dosage, for god sakes, consult your dermatologist or try upping in little increments. Tetracycline can be taken up to 4 times a day; that is, one every 6 hours. Doing this has better efficiency as your body continually has the drug fighting the bacteria causing acne. By subjecting yourself with a massive dosage of this drug in one sitting, you're exposing your health to extremes and you can get seriously sick. You already have a face full of pimples to worry about, you don't want to have to risk going to the Emergency Room to get the drugs pumped out of your stomach.
Lastly, anyone having troubles taking these pills, or any pills for that matter - take it with warm, slightly hot water. It will sooth the gelatine pills and make for an easy passage down to where it's suppose to go.
