some background:
i have moderate zits, they are always red and irritating, some forming whiteheads. I went to derm to get accutane because i was jealous of my frieneds skin who took accutane. After weighing risks/benifits for my acne i decided to try tetracycline first. Ive been on it for 3 months, and it tends to decrease the inflammation of my zits as its supposed to, but all the pigmentation and red marks and horrible zits are still there! I think this drug has helped, but it didn't clear me up even close to enough to satisfy me at all. I wouldnt recommend this drug, but the results are different for everyone.

I was on this for years from age 16-22, it was the worst mistake ever! My body became dependent on antibiotics and I got Bronchitis and Pneumonia frequently after getting off. IT took 5 years to finally start to feel back to normal (with some kind of immune system!) I would say, don't do it! If you're a girl, try birth control pills and benzoyl peroxide. I've tried everything and that combination seems to work the best. If you're a guy, benzoyl peroxide!!!

I have cystic acne, and since taking the antibiotic, the big red cyst-like pimples have cleared up. I haven't gotten a large one since. However, I still get just as many whiteheads and blackheads in my problem areas, if not more. The main difference I see is that the pimples seem to surface more. It usually results in a big whitehead on my chin, but at least it doesn't hurt or scar. So I guess this is only a moderate improvement for me. Am planning to pursue more aggressive treatment in near future.

This works extremely well however, you should definately follow the instructions as you will sunburn badly if using this. If you have severe acne, don't think twice about using this, however if you have mild outbreaks and redness I would use an OTC.

I have used antibiotics for about 10 years on and off for acne on my buttocks, really bad nodules and cysts. When I am on the medication, I have lesser break outs. The moment I stop, i break out automatically. The only thing I dont like is that I have to take them 4 times a day. I almost choked on one before.
I have struggled with this so many years, and am more concerned with the scars. Any suggestions? I heard laser can cause even more scarring, especially for women of colr.

I took it for the last year of high school. It worked moderately well for me. Of course, you have to make sure not to eat or drink within the alotted amount of time when taking the pill, otherwise it dillutes the effect (not to mention, gives you a hell of a stomach ache). As said before, the effect differs from person to person.

I stopped taking the pill when I left for BMT in the Air Force. After a week my skin was clear of everything, even blackheads. I haven't had any problems since.

It turned out that my diet was a huge cause of the problem. Fast food is fine, but just make sure the ratio of wholesome food to junk food is greater in any given day. Try to stay away from caffeine.

Also, clean your sheets once, if not twice a week with a small amount of bleach. That's very important. Shower before bed, as well. Anti-bacterial liquid soap that doesn't clog the poors (Dial's good). I prefer the plastic scrubs as they seem to work the best. Cloth towels tend to gather bacteria quickly.

One last key solution: hand sanitizer. Keep a little bottle of it in your pocket and use it often throughout the day. Thus, when you scratch your face or eat, you're not migrating bacteria from whatever you've touched recently.

My acne was pretty damn bad before the lifestyle change. I was hygenic, but not enough. Some have to be more hygenic than others to curb acne problems.
