I started having acne in middle school and it got to be pretty bad. Accutane was suggested but side affects scared my parents so they said no. I went through years of using various prescription ointments. Finally I went on Spiro, it took a while 4,5 months but it worked. My face really cleared up. After I while they wanted to take me off it so I started taking Yasmin, because it has one of the same ingredients as Spiro. Yasmin was awesome. Although I have to say that in the beginning you do break out. You have to give it a few months for it to start working, but my skin became nearly perfect in about 4 months and stayed that way.

I am 28 years old and have suffered with mild to moderate acne since I was 14. My dermatologist presribed spiro for me when I was 20. I used it along with my birth control pills and my acne cleared up completely for 7 years. Last year my dermatologist suggested not using the spiro to see what happened. Well, after a year of not taking it my skin is worse than it ever has been. I am now back on it and my skin is finally clearing up. In the 7 years I took spiro I did not have any negative side effects, just clear skin. I recommend this to everyone with mild to moderate acne. Without prescription insurance a 50 mg, 30-day supply is around $21.

I am the same Anonymous, CA from a few posts below. It has now been almost exactly two months since I started taking this (200 mg/day). I was already on Yasmin for several months.

About two weeks ago I woke up one day and loved my skin for the first time since I was pre-teen (it was so long ago, I can hardly remember). It was clear as day, and also smooth, soft, and not oily. It was like a dream!

This week I did get one pimple that I would classify as "medium-sized". It's bigger than a whitehead, but far milder than a cyst, of course. This one pimple doesn't even bother me though, because overall my skin is looking great.

I know that some people have been frustrated by not seeing quick results, so keep in mind that only a month ago I had two horrible cysts, one of which I had to have injected. At first I took this as a sign that this drug was definitely not working for me, but I persevered and I am very happy that I did.

FOr background, I am 33 and I have tried everything in the past: antibiotics, retin-a, all other topicals, birth control pills, and accutane.

I strongly urge any woman with difficult hormonal acne to try this (give it at least four months). It is worth a shot!

I have been using spiro in combination with Orth-Tric for over a year now and it has worked really well. When I first started taking Spiro I was on 25mg a day and within a week, I noticed a huge improvement with my skin. ( I have been on accutane 3 times when I was young, and started to have hormonal acne when I was 20). After 6 months of 25mg, my doc raised me to 50mg which I stayed on for a year and it continued to work wonders. I didn't experience any side effects, other than a heart palpitation every now and then.

Unfortunately, my hormonal acne started coming back 2 months ago and I went back to my doc and started taking 75 mg a day now with hopes it will clear my skin up again. Other than 6 month blood tests to check liver and DHT, I would recommend this medicine to any woman who is suffering from hormonal disorders and I was having. Overall, it has worked great with very mild to non-existent side effects!

You have to take birth control for it to work more effectively, but it really didn't work for my acne. :(

Although I didn't have as many of the "cysts" which was nice, I still had a ton of blackheads and smaller whiteheads popping up more often, especially the week prior to having my period. I was on it for close to three months, but now my derm dr wants to try Accutane even though I don't have the cysts now. Yikes.

I had the spotting at first, as well as having to pee ten times a day, but that went away after the first few weeks. I think those are minor side effects, and it didn't make me feel sick or anything, but overall I just was a little disappointed that it didn't work for me.

For months I was apprehensive about trying this pill, after being concerned about developing high potassium levels, etc. Finally I took the plunge and tried it three days ago. Miraculously I have not had even a single side effect. I haven't even had to pee any more frequently than I did before. I hope this lasts! I have yet to see any improvement in acne from this pill, but I am still pleasantly surprised about the price ($10 copay for a month supply). Hopefully it will be beneficial as well as tolerable and economical.

The spiron gets a 2 for me now, on my 9th day of taking it.

I am not experiencing the side effects that can be associated with the spironolactone.

I started to notice it preventing the "extreme" oil production by my sebum glands within the first few days (taking 50mg at that time). On the 5th day I started taking it twice a day, totaling 100mg a day. Unfortunately, it didn't improve from there.

Now having finished my 9th day, my skin hasn't looked this bad since a year ago, before I tried Duac combined with Retin-A micro. It didn't continue to dry my skin, but more blemishes are appearing each day and are taking over. At this rate I will not have any clear pores left on my face before this week is over.

Next stop...birth control pills to prepare for accutane.

Sincerely, Angel

I started taking this medication last year and loved it. I stopped for a while after having surgery (I didn't want to be taking too many medications at the same time) and am so pleased to back on the medication now. I originally had very bumpy skin, more like little bumps all over my forehead, cheeks and nose. I also had dark spots all over my cheeks, which spironalactone helped clear up. I recently started it up again and am hoping for the fast results that I saw last year.

So far I have been taking this for a month. I am not breaking out with the large cyst at this time and it seems to be helping the other lingering ones go away. I was actually prescribed this by my gyno and I thought it was a little far fetched and the pharmacist even said she had never heard of using this for acne. The only difference I see from my self and Christine in canada is the I have not dried up yet?? I live on the coast with 100% humidity everyday so no moisturizer is needed here!! Oh, and my doc prescribed it taken at bedtime. I do not wake up peeing all night but I have to go really bad when I do wake up! I am also taken 200 mg per day.
