30 something female from Colorado

Pros So I have diligently waited to post about Spiro. I started taking 50 mg 2.5 months ago because I still had really oily skin and at least one breakout 1.5 weeks before the old monthly cycle began. It was like hormonal clockwork...and I would dread it! For the first 30 days I saw absolutely no change. NO CHANGE! You'd think after 30 days you would see something...small decrease in oil...anything. But no. This stuff takes at least 2-3 months to work. Now on 75 mg a day - perfect skin.
Cons None. I didn't even experience the diuretic effect. The only downside for me is I do notice more cramping / menstrual pains if I up the dosage. I think 75 mg a day is the best does for my body and size (I'm 110 lbs)
Bottom line It works...just takes a little while. Way better than the pill because it doesn't make you crazy emotional. Its like a little governor on the production of testosterone from your ovaries/pituitary gland.

Pros -25 mg seemed to be working really well
-reduces oil, but my skin wasnt really that oily, so if anything its a little more dry now
-hair comes in finer
-really cheap
Cons I think im having an initial breakout
Bottom line I was on 25 mg for the first month, and my skin was completely clear, then i got bumped up to 50 about 11 days ago, and i cant remember the last time my skin looked this bad...probably not since before accutane. Im hoping its just my body getting used to the upped dosage, or maybe 50 is more than I need. I'm not sure. Gratned it is right before my period, and I do usually get a few small ones around this time, but never anything like this...I'm gonna stick it out, but wanted to share my experience at about the 6 week mark

Pros At age 27 I finally have clear, beautiful skin!!!
Small, easy to swallow pills
Cheap
Cons Have to drink lots of water
Makes me pretty tired
Makes youhave to pee more
Have bad foot/leg cramps every once in awhile
Bottom line I have had VERY oily skin since I was a teen (inherited from my mother). The only thing that has worked for me is Spironolactone as it works from the inside out.

Topicals and antibiotics don't deal with the root of the issue. If your acne is more hormonal and due to overproduction of oil - this may be your ticket. It has been my miracle drug and acne is finally something I don't have to fight anymore!!!

Pros TBD
Cons Tired, Diarrhea?
Bottom line Not sure yet. I started taking 50mg 2x a day just yesterday morning, and almost immediately started experiencing diarrhea. I didn't see that anyone else had that symptom, so I'm a bit worried. Maybe it's a coincidence as I usually respond to most meds really well. Anyone have this symptom?

Pros WORKS!
Cons Seem to be more tired, a little irritable
Bottom line This is the only thing that has ever worked for me. I am a 34 year old female and have had mild to moderate acne since I was a teenager. The last 2 years it seemed to get much worse and I was constantly in the Derms office trying to stop the breakouts before I had any scarring. I didn't want to go on Birth Control, so he prescribed several different antibiotics that seemed to either not work at all or just barely make a difference.

I wil say that it took about 2-3 months to see the full affect, but I have been on it now for 4 months and it has literally worked wonders on my skin. I think all women with hormonal acne should give this a try for a few months. My skin is completely clear and very soft now, for the first time in the last 15 years. It doesn't seem to matter what facial cleanser I use or what moisturizer, my skin reacts well now to whatever I try where as before it was so, so sensitive. Give it a try, it might be the lifesaver you are looking for!

Pros cheap
easy to take
minimal side effects
worked somewhat
Cons minty taste
Bottom line It helped get rid of some of my acne and prevented new flare ups, but wasn't a cure-all. Absolutely worth a try though, very cheap and no side effects for me.

Pros Works fast
Easy to swallow
Cheap
Cons Heard it causes tumors in lab rats
The "Possible" side effects
Doctors visit
Bottom line I am using this medication with Retin A .025 gel.

My doctor gave me a low dosage of 20 mg vs 50 to 100mg. He told me since I was a petite woman that I didn't need more than that.

At first I was concerned that the dosage was too low, but it actually worked for me.

I don't know if it's the combination of the two products or if it's actually this product alone that cleared me up.

I have NO SIDE EFFECTS! :)

I saw results in 3 days!!!

Pros Cheap, Effective, Awesome!
Cons It is a diuretic, so you will need to drink more water. This also means you may get headaches, and there are other side effects. May be hard to get a doctor to prescribe it to you.
Bottom line This should only be prescribed by a doctor. You have to take it every day and wait a few weeks for results but they do come. For me, it was spironolactone with Loestrin birth control that did the trick, since my acne is primarily horomone-related (I break out about once a month for a week or so... hmmmm). This pill is prescribed for blood pressure and hirsutism (overly-hairyness in women!) so you may get some odd looks from doctors and pharms who don't know that it also treats acne. The doctor who prescribed it to me several years ago said this: it somehow counteracts the spike in testosterone which causes women to break out along their cheek and jawline before their menstrual cycle, that it effects potassium levels so you really don't need to take extra postassium when you're on it, that it is ESSENTIAL to drink more water when you take it and finally it does not need to be taken forever - after a few months you wont' need to take it anymore, at least for a while (I took it for a few months and was clear and didn't get it prescribed again for 2 years). You shouldn't drink on it and it may worsen acne very briefly when you first take it. That's pretty much everything you need to know!
