| Pros | - CLEARS SKIN |
|---|---|
| Cons | - possible side effects (I didn't experience any) - the first week you start taking it you have to pee every 5 minutes.. (but that makes you lose water weight so it could be a pro...) |
| Bottom line | I'm 20 years old and I have been struggling with acne for about 10 years. Up until a few months ago (when I began taking spironolactone), I would have to wear about a pound of foundation and cover up just to be able to go out in public without being humiliated. I had tried literally every face wash over the counter, antibiotics, differin, epiduo, but nothing would work for me at all. Then I went on this website and saw the high reviews for spironolactone, so I asked my derm to start me on it. I started taking 50mg a day and did experience an initial break out about 2 days into it, but they disappeared shortly after. Then after about two months moved up to 75mg a day, which is where I am right now. The day I started taking this medicine I counted 30 zits and 1 cyst on my face. Today I have beautiful smooth skin and no pimples or even blackheads. Oh yeah and I began taking birth control (Ortho tri cyclen) at the same time that I started the Spironolactone. I definitely recommend for any female to try this. Don't give up, your acne will be clear one day:) |

| Pros | -reduces cysts in number & depth -doesn't interfere w/diet |
|---|---|
| Cons | -some side effects aren't listed on label but still will occur -infrequent (or more frequent) periods -each time dosage changes, it takes 2 months to adjust & work again |
| Bottom line | I've used this for 7 mos, along w/another pill & 2 topical treatments. It's pretty effective for cyst pimples. For me, it stopped them from appearing in 2 out of 3 areas on my face. However, I also experienced side effects that weren't on the label...like dry scalp & enlarged pecs, because it made me wonder what else could happen. But these were both temporary & started when the doc increased my dosage to 4/day. This dosage also resulted in frequent periods...I had my period every 8-12 days for 3 months. At this point, I'm going off spiro to regulate my periods & because a lower dosage won't be effective for me. |

| Pros | Clear skin Reduced oil production |
|---|---|
| Cons | Menstrual irregularities Mild dizziness at first |
| Bottom line | My dermatologist prescribed spironolactone a little over a year ago, along with clindamycin, Acanya, and Differin. I went off the clindamycin without problem. I can skip the Acanya and Differin without a huge breakout. But I CAN'T skip the spironolactone! This small, minty, wonderful pill has done a fantastic job clearing my skin and reducing oil production. The key is to be consistent and patient. You won't see results overnight! I started at 100 mg, but my dermatologist reduced my dosage to 50 mg in hope my period would stop coming every 15-20 days. The lower dose still keeps my skin clear, and my periods are a little bit more regular. They still aren't nearly as regular as they were before spironolactone, but I feel it's a small price to pay for clear, smooth skin. |

| Pros | Weight loss (possibly from diuretic effect of med). |
|---|---|
| Cons | Side effects included dizziness, excessive thirst, irregular periods, and sensitivity to caffeine. Don't take this med if you have low blood pressure already. |
| Bottom line | I've been on this med exactly 3 months now, and my skin is worse than ever, with cysts along my jawline and around my ears. My dose has been low--50 mg--because of side effects (most notably dizziness due to low blood pressure). Med may be more effective for those who can take higher dose. |

| Pros | - Skin seems less oily already - No new cysts or pimples :) - No side effects noticed - Too soon to say much more! |
|---|---|
| Cons | - Increase in small bumps |
| Bottom line | I have only been on this pill for 2 weeks, so I know it is way to soon to be writing any reviews, but... I was just wondering if any of you girls noticed an increase in the small-ish type bumps on your face or chest. I usually only suffer from acne on my chin around that time of the month, although they are the type that take weeks to go away :( Since I've started taking this med though, I've noticed tons of little bumps on my chest and forehead! This doesn't bother me so much, as I'd much rather take these over the other ones, but I was just wondering if anyone else experienced this? Is this what is meant by the initial break--out? I will definitely be sticking with this med regardless though! I have really high hopes and a good feeling this is my answer :) |

| Bottom line | Hey guys, I'm 23 and was prescribed this med by my doctor back in january. I have had ups and down with my skin since my teenage years, but its never been this severe. I just past the 3 month mark, and although my acne has gotten slightly better, it still makes me sick to my stomach on a daily basis. I don't know if I've become obsessed with it, or if it really is as bad as I think.I have had flawless skin before, so I know it's not better. Anyways, I was just wondering if it took anyone more than 3 months to get this "beautiful" skin I keep reading about. I'm just getting really discouraged and I don't know if I should give up on this medication or not. |

| Pros | *Reduces Acne *No Inital Break Out *Restore Confidence *Reduces Oil Production *NO Sides Effects (Yet) |
|---|---|
| Cons | Hasn't cleared ance up 100%...yet! |
| Bottom line | So my doc procrisbed this to me for my hormonal acne, and I was super nervous because I hate taking medicine. I was having a HORRIBLE breakout, and this, along with tretinion seemed to help alot! It has only been three weeks and my acne has majorly subsided. Also, it reduces my oil production. Before I used to be an oily mess by the end of the day, now it is still a little oily but much much better! And the reason I said light is because this has reduced mine from moderate acne to light:) I hope it keeps working! ps- I have noticied nooo side effects..I dont have to pee anymore than before..there is no difference in me except my acne and confiedence :) |

| Pros | cyst-free skin less oily skin and hair less facial hair |
|---|---|
| Cons | headaches irregular periods nausea thirst weird dreams |
| Bottom line | I have been on spiro for about 3 years. I started on 50 mg and then was increased to 200mg/day. At 200mg I had beautiful skin, but I was constantly feeling depressed and nauseous. The dr. reduced the dose to 150mg/day. I tried to reduce it again to 100mg/day but my dhea levels started to climb again (monitored by endocrinologist). I now stay on 150 mg. Ever since I started taking spiro, the cysts subsided. It was getting to the point where I was depressed about my skin (at 45 year old). I always had acne but never cysts that were so painful. Spiro is a great drug, but there are a lot of side effects. I now get my period every 12-15 days...dr. worries about iron deficiency and it's a nuisance. I sometimes feel more moody than I used to be, but, all in all, I would highly recommend it. I'm hoping I can stop taking it when I hit menopause. |

| Pros | Cleared hormonal acne Smoother, Fresher looking complextion |
|---|---|
| Cons | Intial breakout Some stomach pains |
| Bottom line | This was prescribed to me and I was extremely skeptical. I have never taken any oral acne medication, and topicals I've tried in the pats didn't work. So I was pretty desperate. The first week I broke out like crazy and almost stopped taking it. I was so fed up with the whole "it gets worse before it gets better" crap. But I gave it a chance anyway, and I'm so grateful I did. I'm only 18 so the whole teenage, hormonal zit phase isn't over =p However, this keeps me under control and so far so good. I'm very, very, very happy with the results and hopefully it continues throughout these next few months. My only advice is if you try it, don't give up on it too fast! It takes time but in the end it's well worth it! =) |

| Pros | seemed to keep my skin clear after I got off of antibiotics for several months, but suddenly I began breaking out again and after a month of taking it at a higher dose the situation has not improved |
|---|---|
| Cons | having to urinate 9 times a day; never being able to sleep through the night without getting up 1-3 times to pee; feeling light headed, dizzy and tired on a regular basis; constant dehydration; having to get blood tests; not being able to get pregnant while on it (risk of birth defects); uncertainty as to its tumerogenic effects on humans |
| Bottom line | I have no doubt that many people do very well with this drug and may experience little to no (perceptible) side effects while taking it, but unfortunately, in my case, the benefits were short-lived and the side-effects seem to outweigh any gains at this point. Even if maintaining my higher dose will eventually resolve the minor breakouts I've had recently, I will not continue to take this drug until I have tried a few other remedies. I am literally tired of not sleeping through the night like I used to (waking up an average of two times/night to pee), and I know I have gained a few pounds due to the constant feeling of hunger, which is more often than not dehydration in disguise. Good luck to others who are interested in spironolactone. As for me, I've had enough! |
