Proactiv Solution Reviews
People have asked me about Proactiv® so much that I decided to try it so I could give my feedback. I found it to be surprisingly irritating and utterly ineffective. However, Proactiv is on the right track in recommending benzoyl peroxide, and specifically recommending it in 2.5% strength.
Where I think Proactiv veers off track:
- Cleanser: The Proactiv Cleanser contains scrubbing beads, and Proactiv recommends washing for 1-2 minutes with this cleanser. I am quite stunned at both of these oversights. It is absolutely vital to avoid irritation when treating acne, especially inflammatory acne—the kind most of us have. Scrubbing beads, and washing for this amount of time introduces unnecessary and damaging irritation, perpetuating the acne cycle.
- Toner: I think the Proactiv toner is fine, albeit unnecessary to achieve clear skin.
- Treatment: Over my 20+ years of benzoyl peroxide research and experience, I have found that for benzoyl peroxide to completely clear acne, people must apply it generously. “Use a lot!,” is my simple mantra. It is amazing what this simple act will do toward achieving completely clear skin. Unfortunately, Proactiv packages its treatment in a 1oz. container. The small size of Proactiv ’s treatment bottle leaves people skimping and often disappointed in results. Next, Proactiv combines their benzoyl peroxide treatment with moisturizer. One of the main reasons benzoyl peroxide works so well is because it is a drying and peeling agent, which helps prevent clogged pores. For this reason, it is a good idea to apply benzoyl peroxide without moisturizer, and let the benzoyl peroxide do its thing for a few minutes (5-15) before introducing moisture. Unfortunately, you don’t have that choice with the Proactiv treatment. Lastly, the treatment is heavily scented. I personally avoid scented products because they must be applied right under the nose, and tend to linger and leave me feeling a little nauseated throughout the day.
My suggestion: To completely clear acne, it will prove far more beneficial to buy a gentle cleanser without scrubbing beads, a large, unscented 2.5% benzoyl peroxide medication, and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Then follow these steps precisely to achieve completely clear skin.
If you currently own Proactiv Solution products, don't throw out the Repairing Treatment. If you can handle the smell, it should work in a pinch, as long as you are generous with it. I would not recommend using the Proactiv cleanser. I would also forgo the toner until you’re completely clear. Then feel free to add it in if you’d like and see how things go.
As a final note, I am thankful that Proactiv hires celebrities to talk about acne. This helps reduce stigma, so thumbs up on that!

| Bottom line | DON'T BUY IT. apart from the fact that this product is overpriced and doesn't work, their customer service tried ripping me off $72! I had to call several times and they claimed they "never received my package" when in the end they did! Horribly bad customer service |

| Pros | Cleared my acne better than anything else I've tried. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Dried out my face a little at first. During the "dry times" I cut back to washing once a day and used the green tea moisturizer twice a day and it helped greatly. It does take a little time using it for your skin to get used to washing twice a day with it. |
| Bottom line | I do have light to moderate acne. Nothing to have to see a dermatologist about, HOWEVER, no other over the counter products have worked for me. Even light acne is really embarrassing to have to live with so don't think I have it easy just because I don't see a dermatologist about it. I've tried it all, washes, cleansers, creams, pads, scrubs, I've even tried not doing anything at all. Nothing worked! I began to see results in about two weeks from beginning to use Proactive and contrary to what I'm seeing posted here, my acne only came back if I stopped washing for extended periods of time. Well worth the $20 a month! |

| Pros | There are no pros to this product... |

| Cons | I hate hate hate proactiv . It made my acne worst I developed cystic acne after using it.i have about 3 bumps on my face so i used their refining mask to help clear it. The next day I got a lot of cystic acne forming. It made my skin worst and it was so stupid of me to ever try this. False advertisement ! |
| Bottom line | Never waste your money on proactiv. |

| Pros | Works for the first week. Refining mask is effective. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Proactive dried my skin SO badly after about three weeks- I couldn't wash it or wear makeup at all for days and it contented to flake and peel. I started breaking out much much worse and blemishes were larger and more painful. If I didn't wash my face one morning or fell asleep without washing at night, I would notice response breakouts right away as well. It was also way too expensive given the results and product sizes. Terrible customer service |
| Bottom line | Proactive was a total waste of time and money. I left it feeling completely frustrated and defeated, and with worse skin than I had had before I started. I was not even back to square one; I was worse off. Overall my experience was awful. Also, they charge your card without notifying you! I had to send the new shipment back and wait six weeks for them to pay me back!! |

| Pros | The green tea moisturizer works decent. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Gave me bumps all over my face. Severely dried out my skin. Didn't clear up any acne. |
| Bottom line | If you have sensitive skin I would stay away from this product. I had a horrible reaction to it. My face became red, bumpy, and I developed patchy, dry, red spots all over my face because of this product. It took over a week for all the symptoms to go away and I looked much worse after using this product. The chemicals in it are too harsh unless you have really tough skin. To top it all off, this product did not even help to clear any acne. All it did was make everything worse. For those with sensitive skin, I would suggest trying this as a last resort. |

| Cons | My two daughters saw improvement at first, but then acne got worse than before they started! Scarring type of acne. Took them to a Dermatologist that put them on antibiotics as well as gels, and washes. She said she sees this all the time. Plus, it's just expensive Oxy 10 kind of stuff. |
| Bottom line | Please do not buy this product! |

|---|---|
| Cons | They keep sending it&takibg money out of my MOM'S account,it's not fair, cuz she only ordered it once&they kept sending it&chargibf her too |
| Bottom line | The commercials make it seem so much better than it actually is..it works, kinda, but you have to constantly use it for your face to STAY clear. |

| Pros | None really |
|---|---|
| Cons | Basically everything... Irritated my skin left me a giant hole Dried out my skin The cost |
| Bottom line | I've used this so many times. When I was like in Middle school, then high school. I would go off and on for 5 months at a time, and try giving it another chance.. but it never worked. It ruined my poor, sensitive skin. This is terrible, terrible, false advertisement. Not to mention they get famous people like Jessica Simpson and Katy Perry to advertise -__- please. |
